216 runtime errors are often the result of trojan infections; you have indications of infections in your HJT log as well.

To begin with, please do the following:

You will need to close/quit all web browser programs and disconnect from the Internet for much of the following, so you should print out these instructions or save them into a text file with Notepad.

* Visit at least two of the following sites for an online virus scan:

BitDefender Free Online Virus Scan
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php
Make sure you tick AutoClean under Scan Options.

Panda ActiveScan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/active...n_principal.htm
Make sure you tick Disinfect automatically under Scan Options.

Housecall at TrendMicro
http://housecall60.trendmicro.com/e...orp.asp?id=scan
Make sure you tick Auto Clean.

eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Also run this online trojan scanner: TrojanScan

* Download the most current updates for your antivirus program.
* Download the following two utilities:

CCleaner - www.ccleaner.com
ewido Anti-malware - http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Install and configure CCleaner:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the "My Computer" icon.
3. Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
4. After the new window appears select the "View" tab.
5. Place a checkmark in the checkbox labeled "Display the contents of system folders".
6. Under the "Hidden files and folders" section select the radio button labeled "Show hidden files and folders".
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled "Hide file extensions for known file types".
8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled "Hide protected operating system files".
9. Press the "Apply" button and then the "OK" button. Your computer isnow configured to show all hidden files.

Install CCleaner. Open it, and choose the 'Options' tab. Inside, hit the 'Custom' tab, and add the following folders (Note: Not all of these files are on every computer. If one of these isn't present, skip it):

C:\Windows\Temp
C:\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\History
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Cookies
C:\Windows\Prefetch

After doing this, move back to the 'Cleaner' tab, and inside this, be sure your open to the 'Windows' tab. Inside, check the box labeled 'Custom Files and Folders'. Close CCleaner after that.

Install and configure ewido:

  • Close all other Applications Select language click Ok
  • Click I Agree
  • Click next
  • Click Install
  • Click Finish
  • Wait Ewido will open main screen automatically.
  • Wait again a few minutes and Ewido Should Auto update itself. If it doesn't click update at top of screen. (It is very important to get the updates)
  • When updating has finished. Close Ewido.

*
Reboot into Safe Mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up).

* Run CCleaner. It may take a while for the program to perform its cleaning, so be patient. Close the program when it has finished.

* Run your antivirus program; have it clean all malicious items it finds.

* Open Ewido

  • Click on scanner top of Ewido sceen
  • Click on Settings
  • Under How to Act click on Recommended Action choose Quarantine
  • Under How to scan all boxes should be selected
  • Under Possibly unwanted software all boxes should be selected
  • On right side under Reports: click on Automatically generate report after every scan.
  • Under What to scan select scan every file
  • Click On scan Tab
  • Click on Complete system scan
  • Let the program scan the machine It can take awhile give it time.
  • When scan has finished At bottom of screen click Apply all Actions
  • Click Save report
  • Click Save Report as (Save as window's screen should pop up.)
  • Click desktop
  • Click Save
  • Exit ewido

*
Empty your Recycle Bin, reboot normally, run HijackThis again, and post the new log. Also post the log that ewido generated.

Hi, thanks for the advice. But I was unable to run the online scans apart from the trojan scan as the
pc i'm having problems with keeps crashing out with the 216 error. As well as this I was unable to run my virus software in safe mode. Apart from that I was able to everything else, the two reports are below:

Ok- let's dig a little deeper:

You will need to close/quit all web browser programs and disconnect from the Internet for much of the following, so you should print out these instructions or save them into a text file with Notepad.

* Download CCleaner and save it to your desktop or another convenient location.
* Download FixWareout and save it to your desktop or another convenient location.

* Install and configure CCleaner:
9. Press the "Apply" button and then the "OK" button and shutdown My Computer.
10. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Now, install the program. Open it, and choose the 'Options' tab. Inside, hit the 'Custom' tab, and add the following folders (Note: Not all of these files are on every computer. If one of these isn't present, skip it):

C:\Windows\Temp
C:\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\History
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Cookies
C:\Windows\Prefetch

After doing this, move back to the 'Cleaner' tab, and inside this, be sure your open to the 'Windows' tab. Inside, check the box labeled 'Custom Files and Folders'.

* Double click Fixwareout.exe to start the Fixwareout Setup Wizard

  • Click Next > Install.
  • Ensure that the box to the left of Run fixit is checked.
  • Click on Finish.
  • Follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer - please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load - this is normal.
  • When your system reboots, follow the prompts.

Afterwards HijackThis should launch by itself - if it does not, start it manually.

* In HijackThis, click on 'Do a system scan only' and place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=userinit.exe
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D44CCDBD-C9C1-44C7-9A6B-74B250FD070F} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\winnuts.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{628EB24D-F3C2-4E6F-8614-0AB4E7BCD021}: NameServer = 85.255.116.66,85.255.112.80
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{A7B0DF00-423E-4CDF-8340-5F8884790DFD}: NameServer = 85.255.116.66,85.255.112.80

Close all open windows/programs except HijackThis, and click on Fix checked button. Close HJT once the fixes complete.

* Boot the computer into Safe Mode and:

* Open CCleaner and Run scans in both the 'Cleaner' and 'Issues' categories. Note: It might take several scans in each to remove all of the junk. Close CCleaner when it has finished cleaning. Note: If you are prompted to restart the computer to complete the cleaning, do not do that yet! We will restart later.

* Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

* Search for the following files and delete them if found:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winnuts.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WIN32HLP.0XE

C:\WINDOWS\system32\csflp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmhjo.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmyfy.exe

(The last two files may have "morphed" their names slightly. If you do not find the exact filenames, but do find files named dm<three random letters>.exe, and which were created or modified in the past few days, delete those files.

* Empty your Recyle Bin and reboot normally.

* Run HJT and post the new log, along with the contents of the C:\fixwareout\report.txt log file. Also let us know if any of the infection symptoms have changed.
