New Window Entitled 'Common' When Booting up

Greetings. I am a new subscriber and this is my first post. Hope you can help me.

My HP laptop which uses Windows XP Pro has recently started displaying something it never did in the past. A window with nothing in it appears when the computer boots up and remains there unless I close it. It reappears next time I close the computer and boot up. It is entitled C:\Program Files\Common.

Any reason why this has appeared out of the blue and any idea how to get rid of it?

Let's see what you've got running that might be causing that to happen:

Download the free HijackThis utility. Once downloaded, follow these instructions to install and run the program:

Create a folder for HJT outside of any Temp/Temporary folders and move the HijackThis.exe file to that folder now. A folder such such as C:\HijackThis or C:\Spyware Tools\HijackThis will do.

Run HijackThis, but do not have HJT fix anything yet; only have it scan your system! Once the scan is complete, the "Scan" button will turn into an option to "Save log...".

Save the log in the folder you created for HijackThis; the saved file will be named "hijackthis.log". The log file will open in Windows Notepad once you save it; cut-n-paste the entire contents of the file from Notepad and post it here.

The log contents will tell us a lot about what "nasties" have crept into your system, and once we analyse the log we can tell you what to do from there.

I don't want to raise false hopes, it may be totally wrong, but I stumbled over this:

Did you install a Norton product lately or did something else with it?
I do not understand exactly why the spaces in pathnames mentioned in that link are a problem with some entries in the "run" key of the registry but others not (?), but maybe you can try what the poster there did. (Adding missing double quotes "" on these entries.) But....are you familiar with regedit and the registry?
(Maybe this leads someone else who really knows what's going on there (unlike me :o ), to the right solution for you.)

As far I can see (and that's not very far, so don't trust me too much) your log doesn't show any clues of an infection, atmost some unnecessary entries. But you ran HJT from a temporary folder, not as recommended by DMR. If you take a close look on HJT's own process entry in the log, you see one of the good reasons why you shouldn't run it from there...;)

I can't read the info you linked to, but yes- Norton has a lot of components running out of the C:\Program Files\Common Files folder, so that would be a good place to start looking. Check the following:

Open the Event Viewer utility in your Administrative Tools control panel and look through your System and Application logs for entries flagged with "Error" or "Warning", especially those which mention a Norton/Symantec file. Double-clicking on such an entry will open a properties window with more detailed information on the error; post the details from a representative sample of some of the different error messages (please don't post duplicates of a given entry, or flood us with the entire contents of the logs).

To post the details:
In the Properties window of a given entry, click on the button with the graphic of two pieces of paper on it; the button is at the right of the window just below the up arrow/down arrow buttons. You won't see anything happen when you click the button, but it will copy all of the details to the Windows clipboard. You can then paste the details into your next post here.

Recently, and only on initial startup the following folder opens:

C:Program FilesCommon

I did check to make sure that all references in the
Registry

......CurrentVersionRun  have " " if there are any spaces.

Also, I did not recently install "Print Directory" (which caused
this issue before" Any thoughts how to stop this folder from opening?

BTW this issue occured two years ago on both of my computers:
Common event:
Norton Systemworks install or upgrade
Problem: unwanted folders opening on Startup
Solution: Making sure that all entries with
spaces in the above Run notations
are encapsulated with quotes
i.e.

(was) C:Program FilesCommon FilesSymantec SharedCfgWiz.exe /GUID 
{DA9935BA-22F7-44ee-BD12-BD8B87700BEA}
(now) 
"C:Program FilesCommon FilesSymantec SharedCfgWiz.exe" /GUID

Hi GoYouBlues,
your log still looks unsuspicious. Now try to narrow down the perpetrator with the Event Viewer as explained by DMR.

If I understood the guy in that posting I found, he just added quotation marks wherever they were missing in the mentioned registry keys. With the information from the Event Viewer, we can (hopefully) find the single entry causing the window to pop up.

Otherwise:
The scheme is to put every path+filename in double quotation marks "", (not the whole line if a parameter follows the path!) whenever spaces occur in that path.
Example:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Logitech\QCDRV\BIN\CamWizrd.exe
becomes
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Logitech\QCDRV\BIN\CamWizrd.exe"
and
no...wait a minute...spank me but I have a feeling that this could be the source of the trouble already: This is the only entry that has more than the one expected space in ...\Program Files\..., missing quotation marks and the second space is from ...\Common Files.
