My browser now opens to C:\searchpage.html and the history is just a browsbox to my computer. I have NAV updated and running. I have also run Spybot, and can't put a dent in the problem. Is there any hope for me?

I would be forever indebted to whoever could manage to help poor me.

This is my HJT log:

This thread documents a classic Internet Explorer hijack: many IE settings and startup items were altered and removal attempts destabilized the machine. was correct to suspect a CoolWebSearch-type infection and to recommend a targeted remover; the lsass.exe crashes reported by after a cleanup attempt are an important warning that the infection has touched core components and that removals must be done carefully.

Immediate priorities (do these before more fixes)

  • Back up personal files to external media or a disk image so data survives any recovery or reinstall.
  • Obtain recovery tools: the Windows install/repair media or a bootable antivirus rescue disk, and a second clean PC for research and scanning of saved files.
  • Save the current HijackThis log and keep the program's backup file before using "Fix." Do not run multiple removal tools at the same time.

A safe, practical cleanup sequence

  1. Boot into Safe Mode. Run one specialized remover (the tool for this family) and let it finish, then reboot to Safe Mode and run a full anti-malware scan. Avoid repeating different "fix" actions at once.
  2. Use HijackThis only to remove entries you can identify as malicious; keep its backup so you can restore anything that breaks. Post a fresh HJT log to a removal forum if uncertain.
  3. Inspect the hosts file, DNS settings and startup/Run keys for rogue entries, and remove suspicious executables from temp and startup locations.
  4. If lsass or other system services fail after removal, use Last Known Good, the Recovery Console (sfc /scannow) or a repair install—frequent crashes often mean a repair-install or reformat is safer than piecemeal fixes.

Aftercare
After the system is clean, run full AV/anti-malware scans, change all important passwords from a known-clean machine, and install all OS security updates. If multiple system files or services remain compromised, consider a full reinstall to guarantee integrity.

You Have A Variant of the CoolWebSearch Trojan.

Please Download CWShredder from and run the Program in safe mode . Press the "Fix Button" Let it fix all variants. Next, Close the program and all windows and IE windows and run hijackthis and Post a Fresh log.

Reboot to SAFE mode to run swshredder

reboot computer and post a new log

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary.

And it would be a good idea to run one of the free online virus scans in my signature .

Thank you very much for helping. You have no idea how lost I am.

Ran CWShredder in safe mode, only removed one item in msconfig. Here's the new HJT log:

The cwshredder should have fixed most of that are you sure you hit FIX when you ran the program in safe mode !! Run it again please and ,don't hit SCAN , hit FIX!!! and let it go until it stops

Yes, I'm very sure. It caused some major problems. Everytime I brought it back up and tried to connect to the internet it initiated a system shutdown and told me "C:\Windows\system32\lsass.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code -1073741819. The system will now shut down and restart"

The only way I could get the machine back up was to restore back to 4/30/04. I assume you want me to run a new CWShredder in safe mode and post a new log, but I'll wait for instructions. The searchpage it takes me to now is different. ()

Ugh.

no what i want you to do for now is run the online virus scan in my signature .

Found & Cleaned "malware.WORM_AGOBOT.Z"

Virus scan found:

(3 times) JAVA NOCHEAT.A (have path)
(3 times) JAVA FEMAD.B (Deleted 1, have path to remaining 2)
BAT SASSER.A (Deleted)

Makes me feel good about renewing my NAV subscription last month.
