My Computer closes down everytime I run any kind of virus scan... running XP

I have been fighting this battle for a couple of months now ... have tried every virus program I can... from ad-aware... spybot..norton.. trends... register mechanic ... pc doctor etc... there must be a shutdown worm or trojan somewhere... it will also shut down for no reason at anytime with no warning... just turns off...

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

Sorry caperjack, you weren't here :)
Unzip HJT into it's own permanent folder before doing anything in order for it to create backups. (Not a temporary folder or directly on the desktop & not directly on your hard drive). Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked' :

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RunDLL] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\System32\bridge.dll",Load

Then check in your system32 folder to make sure the bridge.dll file is gone.

Are you still having the problem or did caperjacks advice fix you up?

Try running AVG in safe mode & see if it does a complete scan. It could be AVG is playing up.

Thanks Crunchie :) The Bridge.dll is gone!!! However, I still cannot run a complete virus scan without shutting down. ??????????????

Bummer... I'ver tried running AVG... Register Mechanic... Panda all in Safe Mode and all shut down the computer prior to completion.

How did you manage to try the Panda scan whilst in safe mode? I thought one couldn't go on-line in safe?
Might be worth uninstalling AVG then reinstalling it.

Sorry... shouldn't have included Panda... did it online. I have installed and uninstalled several virus programs and it doesn't help... I'm very close to re-formatting!!!! Major Bummer :sad:

The only thing I can think of now is to disable system restore & try scanning then set a new one. All previous restore points will be lost if you do.

Clear your restore points like so..
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

My Computer closes down everytime I run any kind of virus scan... running XP
