Internet Explorer Suddenly Opens

[Evening]

I am using the Firefox browser only. My Internet Explorer is closed and has medium to high security settings. All of a sudden, IE opens with strange advertisements. This happens over and over while using Firefox. I ran Norton Antivirus - no virus found. I ran AdAware - deleted some tracking stuff. Now I downloaded HijackThis with your instructions. Hi,

In my opinion you have some kind of adware installed that launches randomly Internet Explorer.

Have you installed "My Web Search" into IE or it had installed itself automatically? My first suggestion would be to get rid of that application and wait to see any improvements.

From the log you have submitted you need to get rid at least of the following file if this is a non user-installed app:

C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwsoemon.exe

this is the main exe and should make stop working the application.

Then, if that solves your problem you will need to polish a bit the registry entries and delete all related info about this application.

Remove(uninstall) the 'lop' infection by going to here, then downloading and running the uninstaller(s) that relate to the application(s) your wanting to remove. The following selections are available: "Start page", "Search engine", "Accessories Toolbar".

After uninstalling any (or all) of the above, let's see if we have anything in "Scheduled Tasks":

Download, unzip and run ScheduledTasks.bat (courtesy of ddeerrff), and when notepad comes up, post the contents back to this thread.

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:

Thank you fcerullo's! I followed the link you posted and did the following:
you can remove them manually by running Regedit and find MWSOEMON and delete the key. Try searching for LSvr; LTDMgr; websearch; WebSearch Email Plugin. Or 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run' and delete the values called 'WebSavingsfromEbates', 'websearch' and 'couponsandoffers'.

Restart computer.

Use the Find (Start Button : Search) and locate file MWSOEMON.EXE and delete it. Try to locate and delete websearch1.exe; MWSOEMON.EXE; MWSSRCAS.DLL; Toolbar.dll.

Browse your computer c: drive "Program Files\mywebsearch\" folder and remove it.

Thank you for your help.

I replied to the post before your post by deleting C:\MyPrograms\MyWebSearch
and mwsoemon.exe

Your Post in chronological order:

1. I followed the link you supplied to the page about lop. I tried to download the lop uninstaller - but when I clicked on the link for the download my Norton Antivirus caught and quarantined a virus.

2. The lop website had a list of possible programs to look for under Control Panel Delete Programs. None of them were on my computer, including MyWebSearch. It must have been deleted when I deleted the folder.

3. I used the Hijack This scan and "fixed" all the files you listed.

4. I then located and deleted the Program Folder My Way. All the other folders you listed were absent. I searched for them even in hidden files.

5. I restarted my computer.

The problem is not fixed yet. IE is still opening on its own with advertisements. I have the pop-up blocker ON. Also Outlook keeps trying to install or update something and I keep hitting cancel. Not sure if that is related.

I run AdAware frequently but do not have SpywareBlaster or realtime adware protection. I'll check it out.

My computer is still sick. Help if you can.

You still have the Lop infection. You can either disable Norton whilst you download the file from the Lop site (it is safe, I hjave advised this fix numerous times), or do the following;

Please download and install AVG antispyware tool

• Close all other Applications Select language click Ok
• Click I Agree
• Click next
• Click Install
• Click Finish
• Wait and AVG antispyware will open to the main screen automatically.
• Wait again a few minutes and AVG antispyware Should Auto update itself. If it doesn't click update at top of screen.
• It is very important that you get updated
• When updating has finished. Close AVG antispyware.

If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

• Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear use arrow up to highlight
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.
• For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site: HERE

  You MUST manage to get into Safe Mode for the fix to work.

Make sure to close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while AVG antispyware performs its scan!

• Run AVG antispyware.
• Click on scanner at top of AVG antispyware screen.
• Click on Settings.
• Under How to Act click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine.
• Under How to scan all boxes should be selected.
• Under Possibly unwanted software all boxes should be selected.
• On right side under Reports: click on Automatically generate report after every scan.
• Under What to scan select scan every file.
• Click On scan Tab.
• Click on Complete system scan.
• Let the program scan the machine It can take awhile give it time.
• When scan has finished at bottom of screen click Apply all Actions.
• Click Save report
• Click Save Report as (Save as window's screen should pop up.)
• Click desktop.
• Click Save.
• Exit AVG antispyware.

Reboot back to normal mode.
Post the log here.

Hello. I ran AVG Anti-Spy in Safe Mode and took all the actions you listed. Both medium and high threat objects were found and quarantined. Although I had and still have generate report after every scan checked, no report was generated. Also I could not click on any of the options like save or do anything to generate a report. I could see the objects in quarantine while in safe mode. I rebooted the computer and checked the program in regular mode - it still says 8 objects were found and quarantined. However, now the files are no longer listed in the quarantine section. There is still no report. Should I scan it again with HijackThis or redo the AVG safe mode? Please let me know. Thank you.

Hello. Up until this last fix you gave me (Start/Run and Uninstall) my PC was still infected with something because the IE browser was still opening on its own with ads. Additionally - Microsoft Outlook (which I have never used) has been opening and trying to install something. I always hit cancel. Today before your latest fix, Outlook even managed to create a "welcome" envelope. I scanned it for viruses and found none. I scanned it with AVG Anti-Spyware and found nothing. Then I deleted it without opening it. I am not sure if this is a problem. Outlook has been on this computer for 6 years and that has never happened before this infection.

I am not sure if the system is fixed yet. This morning - After doing everything you suggested with the Start/Run Uninstall thing - I have not seen any of these activites. Neither the IE problem nor the Outlook problem. Yet.

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Download CCleaner and install, then run it. It will clear out your temp folders.

1. Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
2. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
3. Close when finished.

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, AVG anti-spyware, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D.
Run them all on a regular basis, following the maker's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.
