The behavior described by — fixes applied with HijackThis, then returning after reboot — strongly suggests a persistent installer or autorun process is recreating the browser popups. That can be a hidden startup item, a scheduled task/service, a driver/Winlogon hook, or a helper process that injects into IE at runtime. Treat removal as a containment + elimination job: stop the reinfection, remove the offending files/entries, then rebuild secure defaults.

Recommended recovery sequence (safe, repeatable):

  1. Contain: disconnect from the network (unplug or disable adapter) so nothing can be re-downloaded while you clean.
  2. Boot Safe Mode (or Safe Mode with Networking only if you need updated definitions). Update scanners before running them.
  3. Use layered scanners: run an updated signature-based anti‑malware (Malwarebytes or comparable), then a second-opinion cleaner. As @caperjack recommended, tools that target the CoolWebSearch family and general spyware are useful — update first and run in Safe Mode if advised by the tool.
  4. Inspect autoruns more fully than HijackThis can: use msconfig and a tool like Autoruns to find items in Run, RunOnce, services, scheduled tasks, BHOs and Winlogon entries. Disable suspicious entries (don’t delete without a backup). Autoruns link: Autoruns (Sysinternals).
  5. Check IE settings and system files: reset IE, verify proxy settings (no unexpected proxy), and inspect the hosts file at C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts. Remove/rename suspect executables, but export registry keys or create a System Restore point before edits.

Cautions and follow-up:

  • Do not blindly remove entries from HijackThis; legitimate items (Adobe, Norton, Logitech, etc.) should be left alone. If unsure, export the entry or the key and ask for confirmation.
  • After cleanup, reboot normally, reconnect, update Windows/IE, and run full scans again. If popups persist, post a fresh HijackThis log and list which scanners produced detections. Following this ordered approach helps ensure the reinfection source is found and removed rather than repeatedly cleaned.
