Short summary and practical next steps based on the thread: is seeing Norton report protection problems and the mail-scanning component failing; correctly flagged HijackThis as relevant for recovery; s experience suggests intermittent disabling can be either corruption or an interfering process. The goal is to triage quickly and avoid making changes that remove useful diagnostic data.

Basic triage (do these in order)

  • Verify the Norton program is running: open Task Manager and check for any Norton/Symantec processes; if nothing obvious appears, check Services for entries mentioning Norton/Symantec and try to start them.
  • Try LiveUpdate or program update from inside the Norton UI and then run a full scan. If the UI will not open or updates fail, boot Windows into Safe Mode with Networking and run scans there.
  • Use a reputable on-demand scanner or rescue tool (second-opinion scan) while in Safe Mode to look for rootkits or malware that may be disabling the AV.
  • If the product is corrupted or the services will not start, perform a complete uninstall and reinstall using the official removal/clean tool from Symantec before reinstalling the product.

Notes about HijackThis and System Restore

  • HijackThis is a diagnostic tool; it can produce logs and (if you used it to remove items) it usually made backups of changes. is right that those backups can help restore what was removed. System Restore can remove installed utilities if the restore point predates their installation, which explains s observation that HijackThis disappeared after the restore. Do not use the HJT "fix" options unless you know exactly what an entry does.

If the problem persists after reinstalling and scanning, collect a current HijackThis log and the Norton error messages/details, back up personal files, and escalate to official Symantec support or a community helper with the logs.

plz help my computer is totaly suseptable to any virus right now please help me

i think i may have deleted some important things with hijackthis can important files show up on there

If you used hijackthis to fix things in the log ,you can put them back with hijackthis ,as it created backups when you did the fix .just run hijackthis ,and go to Configure/backups and put back the norton stuff .

Also a virus can shutdown your auto protect /and stop nortons from working ,
post a new hijackthis log !

it was all messed up so i did a system restore to the 6th.
Does hijackthis carry viruses or popups or other unnessecery becuase the system restore got rid of it.

my norton frequently is disabled. im constantly re-starting so it will enable itself.i emailed norton for advise but they said 4-5 working days for a response.till then i have to put up with the hassle.good luck
