messed up desktop

I've contracted a couple of Trojans - one was Zlob.MediaCodec, which I think is gone now, but am not sure; the other is Smitfraud, which I see by other threads is active right now.

Symptoms: white desktop background; blue icon titles; other stuff may show up that won't go away.

I've run a bunch of stuff you've recommended in the past. Here are the HJT log and the Smitfraud Fix log.

Also ran AVG, which found some tracking cookies and four remnants in Firefox, but the program wouldn't let me save the log, and nothing showed up in quarantine even though I had set it up do put the stuff there.

Hello there, if you notice that your PC is running a bit crazy, it maybe possible that computer is infected. In addition to viruses, your computer may be infected with spywares, Trojans, worms, adwares, viruses and other malwares. Also, I do recommend that you clean/restore your registry files…if these are corrupted, your PC will act crazy. The software to help you with your registry: RegCure and Regpair.

I know it's infected - I've run more programs than I care to count - SpySweeper, SpyBot, Norton Anti-Virus, XSoftSpy, AdAware, AVG, .... and am still having problems. I'm so glad to have discovered this forum, and hope you all can help me figure this out.

BTW, I run RegCure on a regular basis.

You can do all this in safe mode:
Run Smitfraudfix option2.
Start hijackthis, select Scan Only, place checkmarks against all the entries listed below that still exist, and then press Fix Checked.

Good. Delete this file [SMF should have done it already..]:

Next delete the MyWay files/folder in Program Files.

Post that log, and a fresh hijackthis log from normal mode.

SMF is a tool which should not be run multiple times - if set to clean and it finds no infection it breaks your desktop.
I think that last SMF log you posted could be the result of your setting some spyware guard with one of your tools which sets entries in your hosts file to block bad sites... in this case thousands of them. SMF could not handle it.
-anyway the log is incomplete.
Please remove that spyware hosts file guard and run SMF option 1 again and post the log, only that log.

We-ell... if it's all working SMF probably cleaned the adware out.
The hosts file is a redirection file for URLs that exist in the listing.... in your case if you type any of those URLs into your browser it is redirected back to your machine [127.0.0.1]; that file would have been written in there by one of your spyware guard services.
So yep, you could be okay...
