Results may vary depending on bitrate. A lower-quality video will likley run at a quite good framerate; a higher one may not work so well. Part of this might be due to your internet connection: if you have dial-up, it's your internet that's limiting you, NOT your iMac.
I'd recommend trying streaming with RealPlayer, as that has worked pretty well for me on even low bandwidth connections.
