Cars have a useful purpose, guns do not.

You don't consider the ability to defend yourself against an attacker to be a useful, valid purpose?

Note: The main historical reason for keeping weapons away from a people or people group was to ensure they could never rise above their 'betters'. It wasn't just applied to guns; consider that a peasant found with a sword was likely to face severe punishment, if not death, in most of medieval europe.

Those who hold power, or those wishing to do so, will do their absolute best to ensure that others, those outside the 'in' group, will be unable to defend themselves when the time comes. It's written all over history.

In reference to WaltP's little 'history of computing' entry:

Some of the stuff I've seen about earlyish Microsoft development indicates an interesting name for one of their products...a name (and product; haven't checked it for myself yet) that, if true, marks the beginning of a great Microsoft tradition that continues to this day.

Supposedly, one of the early M$ operating systems was known as QDOS. The name is theoretically an acronym, standing for 'Quick & Dirty Operating System'.

Anybody else know more about this little tidbit of history?

One reason it's mentioned is because it's a home-grown product. In other words, it's derived from corn (grown in the US), and processed in the US.

Also, since when have politicians accurately passed laws that made sense? :icon_wink:

Well, there was some big hoo-hah a while back about a set of ten special laws to prevent the government from utterly taking over every aspect of life, but these days it doesn't seem like more than one or two of those are actually acknowledged any more...

I thought the group might get a kick out of this.

Last week, an older couple at my church approached the pastor after evening services, and said they had a prayer request they wanted him to pray for. Apparently, a woman they know is looking for a computer in order to work from home. I have/had a spare box that I haven't been using for a while, so I popped out the hd (wanted to save the files for future use) and went to the local area repair shop to purchase a replacement. I had the box with me, and the guy behind the counter took it, rather than simply allowing me to purchase a drive; I'm guessing they've dealt with too many 'users' in the past, although I hope I can prove myself on that count eventually. This happened Saturday afternoon; I was told I could come pick the box up on Tuesday. They intended to put in a used, reformatted drive running XP.

I got there yesterday for the pickup, and had the manager come over to speak with me. His first words were something like "I've never seen anything like this before in all my years here."

When installing XP, there comes a point when you're supposed to input the Micro$oft installation key numbers. On this box, said numbers were emblazoned on an official Micro$oft sticker pasted to the side of the case. The case was originally running WinXP, so you'd think to get …

I will probably look completely absurd, but I found out that Marilyn Monroe had an affair with JFK? I never knew that! And she was also married to Arthur Miller, the author of 'The Crucible.'

I never new it either, but that's not too surprising. JFK seemed to have a lot of 'on the side' relationships going on. I can't remember the woman's name, but apparently one of JFK's 'paramours' was also sleeping with Sam Giancana at the same time; Giancana is reputed to have told her he was responsible for putting 'your boyfriend' in the White House.

You (the US) joined a bit late though; you missed the early fun.

That's okay, FDR was busily scheming ways to get in for some time before that.

I'm having trouble verifying this (wikipedia's silent on it at the moment), but I'm fairly sure from what I've read elsewhere that the Shoah/Holocaust was at least partially responsible for the acknowledgement of the nation of Israel. This was sent to me today...

NO GAS...On May 15th 2007
In April 1997, there was a 'gas out' conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight.

On May 15th 2007, all internet users are to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places.

There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up.

If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take$2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companies pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.

Making this an absolutely worthless gesture, as that one day would be made up either just before or just after. You really want to make a point? Start carpooling, grab a bike, take a bus. Remove more than just one day's worth of funding, otherwise they'll not care.

And wasn't this particular e-message already debunked somewhere else on site? I vaguely remember jwenting posting something about it...

conservative estimates range from 10 to 25 million dead, not counting the million or so German POWs that never made it out of Siberia.

I can't remember the name offhand, but this reminds me of something I read about a while back. Apparently, a number of Russians took up German uniforms in order to fight against Stalin; after they were captured, they surrendered to the Americans, and I think British, on the grounds that they wouldn't be sent back. So, naturally, the American government drugged them and sent them back so the president could continue on all buddy-buddy with 'Uncle Joe'.

Naturally, of course, the captives were killed upon returning to Russia.

If you're bringing up trying to reduce/end poverty, sk8, the quickest way to bring people out of the poverty belt would be to lower taxes across the board.

*Waits for gasps of shock to end*

Think about it for a second. The 'rich folk' you were just hounding are the ones who own the businesses, right? Well, think about it this way: When they're getting hit with heavy taxes, they'll put their money somewhere that taxes can't get to it. This means less is going into the jobs that the 'desperate working class' hold, and some of those jobs are likely to disappear. In addition, the higher taxes at lower income levels mean that even those who do still hold jobs are going to have to fork over (it ain't giving if your only other option is prison) a sizeable portion of their income that they'd have been able to keep for themselves otherwise. Which side favors lower taxes, sk8, Left or Right?

Although I'm a bit confused. We're supposedly still living under the 1947 presidential succession act, but it looks like the 25th amendment (the one Ford was appointed under) overrides that...so why is the 1947 still on the books in that case? If I am somehow in error posting this, I apologize. However, I would hope that this is the best place to ask this question. I am dealing with a MSVC Compiler, version 1.52, on a system running Windows 98. I am using these rather antiquated pieces of equipment for a reason.

I have been requested to maintain a set of 5+ year old C code, designed to be ported over to a small hand-held barcode scanner after being compiled. According to the person who previously compiled the program, a 16-bit compiler is required for the ported code itself, and he also stated that the compiler he used didn't like to play nicely with Windows XP.

The original source project I received will, in fact, compile with no errors (although it has numerous warnings regarding unsized arrays). However, in trying to learn more about the code I am working with, I set up a program that attempted a few simple time functions, and included a .c and .h pair of time-related files from the original project, where the .c file included the line

#include <bht.h>

Even though the original project compiled without any errors, attempting to compile my test project doing nothing but including the two files from the test project causes a fatal error "can't find bht.h" when compiling.

I have searched Google for the term "bht.h". The vast body of returned results were apparently chemistry equations. I have searched on "bht.h C header", with no …

To me the most interesting part of U.S. history is a collection of the beginning of all the wars. The things I'm about to say are only ideas of mine and I don't want to offend anyone. They also aren't proven, they are just some of my ideas.

The American government has always relied heavily on public support to enter into wars. In the Spanish American war the U.S.S. Maine mysteriously blew up in the Havana Harbor. This is what set off the American public and got us into the war (possibly set up by the government).

An interesting side note I read on that once: Supposedly, Spain declared war on the United States. Then, when the Congress at the time announced an official declaration of war against Spain, they supposedly backdated the declaration to a few days before the date of the Spanish declaration.

In World War One the Lusitania was sunk by a German U-boat and I place all blame on the United States government. Germany declared unrestricted submarine warfare. In other words Germany said to every nation, "We can't afford any more help for the English, if we see one vessel we'll sink it." Knowing full well what would happen, the American government allowed a civilian ship to go into those waters. What did they think would happen? Later it was proven (and likely at the time) that goods and equipment were being shipped to England aboard this ship. This event turned public opinion from isolationism …

you dont have to make a huge set anyway, use the same small one, just change the scenery a bit, after all its all sand and rocks, how hard would that be?

Every time you have someone enter or leave, you've got to start over at removing the vacuum. In order to do what you're suggesting, they'd have to either be capable of repeatedly removing the atmosphere from your 'smaller' set (which would still have to be large enough for them to walk around in for quite some distance). Either that, or they'd have to have not just the 'actornauts' in space suits (remember, no oxygen in a vacuum) but also the entire 'stage crew' as well, and I doubt those suits hold enough air for massive sets of 'let's reposition the entire scenery' anywhere but an open zone, where the scenery can be changed simply by going from point Alef to point Bet. The moon qualifies as an open zone. A stage studio of any sort I can think of does not.

Actually

IQ=(mentalAge/physicalAge)*100

You don't really "come up" with it. IQ is a valid way to measure the worth a person quickly.
As are standardized tests.

If you break down all information into bits, there is clearly a "wrong way" and a "right way". In an ideal society
the "perfect" person would just be cloned over and over again to make up the whole society and brought up in exactly the same environment. In this way, war nor conflict would exist.

Only in the sense of measuring a specific variant of worth. For example, an IQ test geared towards logical thought would probably give a poor score to someone who thinks in terms of intuitive jumps, no matter what other talents they may have, or even what their jumps might lead to. Your perfect society would stagnate; any sources of innovation will be cut off, unless innovation is part of your 'perfect person', and even then, that will lead to differences...and since they now differ from the 'perfect' exemplar, they must by definition be 'imperfect'.

EnderX 352 Posting Shark

You aren't categorizing the person. You are categorizing a bit of information that happens to be associated with that person.

And you'll never have a perfectly logic-driven society; humankind deals in emotions as well. The only way you'd be able to get what you want would be to somehow kill off the capacity for any kind of emotion in every human being you controlled, and that just isn't going to happen. Not if you want them to be able to serve as functioning members of the society instead of chemically-driven drones.

Okay? Then prove this to be false...

The major point which has helped convince me that the moon landing was faked was the fact that when the control room asked a question to the astronauts, the replies were instant with no delays. This seems strange as even with technology in the 1990's there is a delay from satellite links from the UK to the US. There is about a 0.7 second delay from London to California so how is it possible for instant replies from the Moon ?
There is also evidence that when people go into space that their voice goes tense although the astronauts voices have been analyzed and found to be normal, and 7/10 people said it sounded like someone reading from a script.

When Houston is talking to the module you should not be able to hear the responses at least when the module is landing and the infamous "eagle has landed" quote, this is due to the noise that should have been created by the rocket motor which generates several hundred thousand pounds of thrust 20 ft below the astronauts. The noise would have completely drowned
the vocals out.

A few quick questions regarding the noise:

1. Would that supposed noise be generated inside the cockpit, or outside the cockpit?

2. What makes you so certain they were using every single psi of thrust when they were landing?

And one regarding what you refer to as a instant replies: I …

EnderX 352 Posting Shark

And one question I've always wanted to know, How could the flag flutter when there's no wind on the moon?

The. Flag. Didn't. Flutter.

1. When the astronauts are actually setting the flag, it appears to be waving. The effect is caused by common physics - The flag is attached to a horizontal bar coming off of the vertical flagpole. The entire top of the flag is connected to this bar. Thus, when moving the pole, the top of the flag will begin to move as the bar moves. The bottom of the flag will not immediately move (inertia) but will eventually begin to do so, causing the motion to run across the flag.

2. The photos of the standing flag, astronauts not touching it, appears to be wavering in a breeze. There is a simple reason for this: On the Apollo 11 flight, the boom arm (horizontal bar) wasn't working properly, and they couldn't get it extended the full distance. Therefore, like a curtain that's been partially opened, the material of the flag is sort of folded in on itself. The astronauts liked the effect that the Apollo 11 flag shots had, so they intentionally duplicated it in later flights. If the arm had been working properly on the Apollo 11 flight, this particular 'hoax proof' would have never existed.
