I am working with a delphi form that appears to have a rather interesting problem. I am developing on a laptop sitting at 1920X1200 resolution. On my form, I have a trio of components. One is permanently invisible, and clicked to align/left. The next is permanently visible, and clicked to align/client. The third is permanently visible, and clicked to align/right.

At screen resolution 800x600, the align/client component vanishes when this form is opened. At 1024X768, the next size up on my box, it returns. I can think of no logical reason for this to happen, and would appreciate some suggestions as to what kind of things I should be looking into.

I frankly don't know what that kind of low brow political nonsense (spread your hate kind of stuff) has to do in the Geeks' Lounge? I consider Geeks to be educated folks!

Political discussions encompass wide ranges of intellect, social standing, etc. It shouldn't be surprising to find them in an area dedicated to 'Geeks' any more than you should be surprised to find them in an area dedicated to another such group. To say that it has no meaning here implies a form of implicit censorship; that is, you see no point in allowing certain forms of communication simply because they do not match some standard you hold.

I see in your statement one of two possible meanings. Either you are saying that in an area such as this all forms of political discussion should be prohibited, or else you are saying that political discussion that opposes your own beliefs should be prohibited. I will extend the benefit of the doubt and infer from your statement the first of the two meanings I have listed.

Only if you assume an infinitely large universe in which they can exist. After all, you've also got to consider those between that and the sun's size, those approximately the same size as the sun, and all of those stars that are smaller than the sun. Then you've got to consider planets and planetoids, cometary material, and nebulae. Then you've got to take into account the amount of space that is, well, space. (Empty and without anything inside of it.) A finite universe has a limit to what it can hold; only an infinite universe would not.

EnderX 352 Posting Shark

I fail to see how you consider that to be dictatorial. A dictator's power is usually considered to be absolute; any kind of boundary placed upon it, either by limit of term or by limit of zone of authority, transforms it into something else. Although I will admit that many officials, elected or otherwise, do seem to behave as though they had dictatorial powers...

And I don't know about other countries, but what I've read leads me to believe that no single individual in America has the power to 'declare' war. The POTUS has, if I recall correctly, the authority to 'wage' war, meaning (if I understand correctly) that if we get attacked he can direct our military to fight back without having to have a specific declaration, but the power to 'declare' war, from what I've seen, lies with a multiple-person organization, the United States Congress. (I can't recall at the moment if it's both houses or just the Senate...anybody want to help clear that up for me?)

That's not to say that such niceties are always adhered to. The Korean War and Vietnam War, according to Wikipedia, were officially classified as 'Police Actions' in the United States, to avoid having to seek a direct declaration of war.

I have a php report page I'm working on that's giving me some problems. It's designed to be used on multiple systems; as far as I know, all of these systems are identical. On the system I did development on, the page displays information as needed. On the others, I don't get to see it unless I knock out a specific block of code. Thing is, the code in question doesn't relate to what I'm doing.

This page is designed to be used for two reports. They draw the same information, and they have almost the same format. Therefore, I figured that, since the two are also supposed to always be displayed together, it'd be a good idea to simply modify the original code so it had segments for report A and segments for report B.

Which path is followed is determined by a specific flag variable, $_90Plus. In report A, $_90Plus is supposed to be false; in report B, $_90Plus is supposed to be true.

As I mentioned above, when I'm running the program, I get what seems to me to be a rather strange error. Report B (remember, that's $_90Plus == true) doesn't run to completion if this segment of code, which has meaning only for report A, isn't commented out.

if ($_90Plus == 'False')
            {
              $statnSQL = "****";
              $statnResult = @mysql_query($statnSQL) or die("could not complete station query");
              $row2 = @mysql_fetch_array($statnResult);
              $statnCnt = $row2["count(Stn_Seq)"];

              $statnSQL = "****";
              $statnResult = @mysql_query($statnSQL) or die("could not complete station …

Governments like results for their funds. Scientists who draw on the governmental dole are more likely to become monofocused on only one possible cause/result to their research than scientists who do not, because what in the business world would be called risk (looking at multiple possibilities) is considered in the governmental world to be 'waste'.

Example: There is a theory about cancer causation that assumes the cause is not gene mutation, but over-abundance of chromosomes, most likely introduced during cell division when the chromosomes are somehow not divided evenly. Not all cancers are linked to mutagenic diseases; from what I've seen (and I admit to not being a cancer researcher, so I'm going on the material I've read), most cancers are, however, aneuploid. (I may have misspelled that. The term refers to the extra chromosomes.) Some human cancers are known to have around 80 chromosomes per cell, as opposed to the 46 of a normal human cell.

Why do I bring this up? Because most likely, government-funded researchers will never do any research in this direction; that would imply that the money being spent on the mutagenic theory of causation was wasted, which would be a Bad Thing for the researchers and their financial backers in the government.

I'm trying to set up a program to create an automatic hotcopy backup of our subversion files; the subversion setup is running SuSE 9.3 Linux and mounts to the backup, which I believe is also running the same.

The script for automation is a simple shell script; it is supposed to manage the mount, run the hotcopy, and leave. However, a subversion hotcopy will error out if the target it's being sent to has anything already there. I'm trying to set up a weekly rotation, but that'll still leave a problem after the first week.

I've tried to put in an rm command, with the -r tag, but there are two files (-r--r--r-- structure, owned by 'nobody') that the rm blarggs over, even with the -f tag attached. Does anyone know of a way I can force these files to delete?

For those who are wondering:
Yes, English (or more specifically, American English) is my primary language. I know just about enough Spanish to get me in trouble, and a few phrases in some others. I would not claim to be fluent in anything other than English, however. I'm sorry if I have disappointed anyone who expected me to have command of another language.

I try to treat the language with respect, however, as part of my training was in the written word. I have always enjoyed reading, and when obtaining my degree, chose to take a minor in writing, as the CS department at my college required that some minor be included alongside the CS major. This proved useful in an interesting manner, as it was in one of my minor classes that I learned the basics of Technical Writing, something never covered in the CS classes.

I do have a slightly offbeat sense of humor, and in a written forum such as Daniweb, this is most likely going to come out in badly-spelled, ungrammatical sentances. If necessary, I will try to keep a tight rein on my moments of humor in the future.

I hope this clears up any confusion I may have caused. I apologize for taking so long to respond on the issue.

Draft the Bush daughters and let's see who the real draft dodgers are. For that matter any child of a congressman. They would be sure to change their minds about the war.

From some of the information I've read, Michael Moore tried to pull that kind of questioning on a few Congressmen a few years back for one of his crockumentaries. He made the mistake of asking one Congressman (I'll try to track the name down later, can't remember it offhand) who stated that his own children were already risking their lives in battle, and he'd be happy to continue supporting the war. (May have been Afghanistan at the time; as I said, this was a few years back.) Interestingly enough, Mike chose to drop that little bit of footage from production...

Only because of the fact that more Americans agreed with them. If I recall what I've read correctly, it stated that ~2/3 of Al Gore's recount funds in the 2K election were from ~ 84 rich celebs.

Dictatorship == more efficient, most definitely overall, yet not so pretty or nice to live under as history has noted.

"Democracy" == less efficient and strikingly so in general, but with patience a bit more comfortable if ones lives in Middle class\ borgeoius (like I do).

Actually, with the exception of those who, in the dictatorship, had garnered the dictator's personal favor, I'd say a 'democracy' would be more comfortable for everyone...at least until the point where the nature of democracy began to cause problems. From what I understand of the term, a true democracy could basically be defined as 'government by mob rule.'

Socialist Democracy == Dare I utter this term within the borders of the United States?
* Perhaps the best of two worlds: Democratic vote on the matters the people\ citizens should have a say in (leaders, etc), and Government mandate on matters the citizens are not versed enough to have an open say in: Military, education systems, etc. Hmm-- This sounds a bit like the United States, no?

Not quite. From what I understand, the United States of America isn't any kind of Democracy; we're considered to be a Representative Republic. While I admit that this shares a few of the traits you've lavished out on 'Socialist Democracy', I'm curious as to where you've taken your definition from. For that matter, I can't recall having ever heard the term 'Socialist Democracy' before, so I would also appreciate knowing where you pulled it from also.

Who wants to sin, Hollywood? If they believed in Christianity then they would not want to sin. If they did not believe in it they would not sin becasue there is no such thing as "sin" to them.

Certain actions are defined in the Scriptures (largely in the Hebrew portion, in fact) as being sin. Even if the people of Hollywood don't believe in Christianity, and therefore sin, they still have to deal with the fact that there are others who do, and who might call them to task for their own actions. Even if the Hollywoodites don't think of their actions as being sinful, those who do see them as such will tend to stand against such actions. Ergo, Hollywood uses its own power as a media force (even if it's ostensibly only as an 'entertainment' medium) to preemptively declare all Christians to be in the wrong, usually by painting them as bigoted, intolerant, arrogant, foolish, hypocritical, or some combination of the above. It should be noted that this preemptive attitude is not limited to Christians: Hollywood (or more precisely, the major movers/shakers within Hollywood) also uses its media power to preemptively bolster any kind of political argument it agrees with, and strike down any kind of political argument that it disagrees with, by painting those it presents as having its own collective ideas in a sympathetic light, and those who it disagrees with in a profoundly anti-sympathetic light.

I was joking around, however on a more serious note 4 inches of water can provide protection, about 10 ft should be enough to block most of them but, like you said, lead provides the most protection, about 1/4 inch stops almost all of them. It would not very practical to cover houses in lead. Especially becasue of lead poisoning. Maybe if cities had underground caverns and tunnels with lead sheeting on the top we would be protected. Food would still be a problem though.

I am not assuming that everyone can do this, MidiMagic. I am assuming that a specific individual, one of the upper-level staff for the company that retains my own for its IT purposes, when using an internal business form, has access to at least one business printer that can do this, and to a browser that can parse and use the CSS2 tag. Failing the tag, there won't be any changes and the system will print out in portrait style. I don't have to break into the other system, merely to have a specific piece of pre-defined CSS2 code in place in my own .css file. I fail to see how that violates the law.

Or are you somehow suggesting that the CSS2 code itself is illegal? I'll be happy to bring the topic up in the Geek's Lounge for discussion if that is the case.

EnderX 352 Posting Shark

Wrong way around. i is the square root of -1, something that is usually considered to be impossible. Hence, the 'imaginary' designation.

i = i
i * i = -1.
i * i * i = -i
i * i * i * i = 1
i * i * i * i * i = i

And for the record, I wouldn't have ID'd the
imaginary numbers with what I call the spiritual plane; that's simply a designation for the portion of reality that doesn't relate to the physical world. For example, thoughts and emotions would exist there (as opposed to the neural/chemical activity associated with them, which does lie within the physical plane).

EnderX 352 Posting Shark

sorry. i dont understand what you mean. is it not christianity which says "believe as i believe or you will burn in hell!"?

True Christianity is not a religion, as the term is normally defined. While there are churches and gatherings of believers, the ultimate core of Christianity is a personal relationship between the individual and Jesus Christ, based on His sinless life and the blood He shed in atonement for our sins.

Yes, there are laws in the scriptures. However, it is literally impossible for any normal human being to obey these; we are inherently sinful, meaning we've got an inbuilt inclination to break them as a way of rebelling against God's authority. This is why we need the sacrifice of atonement that was given on our behalf.

If someone is not a christian, will they go to hell? Yes. The scriptures are fairly clear on that. However, no human being can make someone believe something. I'm not talking about 'okay, I think I see your point' here. That's not what the kind of belief needed is. What I'm referring to is what's commonly called faith.

True, saving faith cannot be imposed from outside. It doesn't matter how much someone tells you you've got to believe something, the decision is still on your part, as a matter of the mind and the heart.

Yes, Christians are called to warn others of hell, and to tell others about Christ. The best analogy I can think of …
