0 (zero) is both a number — or, more precisely, a numeral representing a number — and a numerical digit. It represents the concept of nothing; an absence of other values, and is used as a placeholder in place value systems. Zero was the last digit to be incorporated in most numeral systems. In the English language, zero may also be called nil when a number, o/oh when a numeral, and nought/naught in either context.

The "Zero" is also a sweet, historical plane ;)

Is it possible to use files such as GIF files as a value in a Python Dict; that is, is it possible to use GIF files in a Dict and access them directly, rendering them to the screen via Tkinter.

I have a group of GIF files I plan to use in a GUI-based Python program. I will need to access these GIFs based on the results of a RNG. At this point, using a dict seems the most promising considering the use of the "key", but I am not sure.

What is the best way in Python to group image files into a group, an array of images to possibly use within a program?

I never cheated

really really .. I never did

I never cheated in school. I guess I would rather fail a test\ exam having studied the best I could (and learned a few important things along the way); the cheater, expending the energy to cheat sucessfully and experiencing the paranoia of getting caught cheating, in the end does not learn a thing, only receiving the impressive but falsely-earned grade. It betrays the larger point: learning, developing skill-sets, and striving for sucess.

Someday this cheating will haunt the cheater, that is, when he\ she is called to work in an area they were supposed to learn via study and now understand none of it never-the-less possess any reasonable ability to implement a solution. I think this is especially true in the Computer Sciences-- one can only fake it for so long.

I am a programmer but have just recently ventured into the realm of graphics programming using Python; what I have learned so far is fascinating. It is so thrilling to see a coded design appear on the screen in full color. But, I find, making an image appear is one thing while making that image fully functionable is quite another.

I began a seemingly simple project in Python a couple of months ago. It takes the form of a card-like game (chosen to not only deal with GUI image rendering but with the logic, randomness behind the GUI); initially I had nice results (printing the image to the screen!) but I quickly found that manipulating the image to be rather tricky. I had researched and studied resources (Python, Tkinter, etc) until I literally ran out of resources to read (it seemed). I shelved this project but as of tonight decided to open up and try to finish what I started. I detest unfinished work.

I looked through my files of the build. It makes me have a lot of thoughts on the project and actually areas I may have overlooked and neglected originally.

I assumed that it would be wise to build the GUI before I wrote the actual game logic (the game logic is in my head and in notes-- it would be simple to insert and edit it after the interface was working). I struggled with the GUI for weeks then shelved it.

DMR can't 'alter' polls anymore.

And I know that you're probably against him doing it, but it's more of a tradition for polls in the Geek's Lounge as the 'no opinion' answer. ;)

I see. I understand. But, I do not agree with this "tradition" as you deem it and obviously those who make final decisions here on such matters do not either. Obviously, the original poster\ Poll-maker did not appreciate it. So, rationalize that, please.

And, Please note: read the thread carefully; the problem I had was with the throwing around of the derogatory statements about "gays". As to the altered poll-- that is just an immature annoyance in my opinion and also not proper. Wombats? :-| A unique poll can be easily posted for all of those in on this inside joke of sorts to vote on.
This kid was posting a poll about favorite musicians of his, not "wombats".

Well when you were in school how did you study.

It depends what I was studying:

  • Read all books and highlight\ take extensive notes
  • Memorize when necessary
  • Practice Coding and Mathematical concepts to reinforce essentials of material
  • Use Flashcards to drill myself (I did this primarily when studying for the Network+ certification which was definition heavy. This helped me to pass with a high score. I recommend this technique for any student in any course)
  • I would not over-study, or in some cases, not study at all. I rarely studied for tests

I find that I study almost everyday even after graduating from school-- it should never end: brushing up on C++/ Python, learning new languages such as Ruby, building websites to standard, working on algorithms for the fun of it, Math, Security, Assembly lang, or such topics as A.I. design-dev and builds.

I also study things via reading such as: Plato, WWII History, British Lit., Physics\ Astronomy, Languages (German, Spanish, and hopefully Greek and Hebrew soon), and Biblical studies.

I love to learn.

This is a great post-- I relate to so much of it (bolded, numeric choices):

==============================================

1. Work for more than a week on a personal (unpaid) project, during all waking hours.
2. Gain a more than unhealthy addiction to coffee, and a vampiric aversion to daylight and human contact (ok, maybe I'm not so proud of that one)
3. Use Linux more than Windows
4. Use two computers at the same time
5. Expect everyone else to, naturally, know what you're talking about
6. Run a localhost webserver to save FTPing time
7. Write a programming language
8. And use it
9. Have more friends that are programming languages/concepts than people
10. Try to conform to W3C guidelines
11. If the wheel isn't rolling, reinvent it
12. Work as a programmer
13. Dream a computer program
14. Start a list of "Geeky things to do before you die"

===============================================

Especially 2 and 5: I work from home as a programmer so, hence, I rarely leave the apartment. Why would I? I have everything I need here: girlfriend, computers, pets. I do not like bright sun or Summer days-- I like rain, fog, snow... nighttime. I also smoke; it helps keep me awake and alert while I work and\or game on-line.

Thanks for your post.

Here is a true story:

My father (retired ship engineer) told me that, once they had a huge problem with ship's auxiliary engine. That kind of engine is used to run the generator and is usually the size of the engine that is used to propel the locomotive. (just to give you an image of the size)

Apparently, the piston got stuck inside the cylinder and it was stuck so hard that none of the power tools and equipment was unable to jerk it free of the cylinder. They all gave up on fixing the problem, until the chief engineer decided to pour in the cylinder a box of coca-cola. 20 minutes later, piston came out without any effort.

Anyone care for some coke?

What I don't understand is why people buy cola (any brand).

In the States, Cola has become a vice. Sugar is a drug and it is most easily and readily administered via cola. It is not uncommon to see a toddler with cola in his\ her bottle instead of milk or formula.

"Cola" such as Pepsi or Coca-Cola are victors of generations of sly marketing campaigns that attach the ideas of youth, family, holiday, and sentimentality to their products in order to retrieve an almost Pavlovian response. Most citizens of the U.S. (if they indeed drink cola) are either Pepsi drinkers or Coca-Cola drinkers-- usually this divide does not cross bounds to the other side. Myself, I do not drink cola often if ever, but if I was to choose, I would be a Coca-Cola drinker-- I detest Pepsi (very chemical tasting). Coca-Cola reminds me of Christmas, Holidays, childhood. Welcome to American marketing fallout. :cheesy:

I read about this a few weeks ago, in the words of Microsoft (paraphrased): "All Windows users will be able to download security patches and service packs no matter the authenticity of their Windows software, while premium downloads such as IE7 will not be authorized to illegal versions."

A soda is a carbonated drink such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, or Mountain Dew; a soda is often known as a "soft drink" (as opposed to a "hard" drink-- liquor) Soda is also known where I was born (in the Midewest of the U.S., in the State of Ohio) as a "pop", not a "soda".

Not sure I understand this... What is it about coffee (other than caffeine) that has a limit where MD is OK (with caffeine AND sugar [please don't tell me it's diet MD ] )

Ah, no, the limit is not the caffeine level, it is the acid present in coffee. I am not supposed to drink coffee due to the fact that I have an ulcer. I still drink it and in the last year or so I have had no problems but I still have to be careful and not overdo it.

True, I agree that it's a good reason to celebrate when you remember someone for his good deeds. But in whole I find the idea a little hypocritical.

Nick:

You are correct, it is hypocritical. But it is portrayed with wonderful sincerity  . Now, I do believe that the best of our citizens do indeed try to use this day as a time to "give thanks". That is is inherently good. I believe this is a day people use to gather with their family with a sense of peaceful intentions. Supposedly. I believe it is primarily a day reserved for gluttony and a long weekend (in some cases), an extra day off work. It IS a holiday, so Americans should just enjoy it as such however their family, culture, or people celebrate (this includes choosing not to celebrate it, also).

As an American I find it is not quite enough to jam pack all my appreciation into one 24-hour period then moan and groan the rest of the year about how much life sucks.

Thanksgiving to me is like this: I am a Christian and I try to attend church when I am able to BUT, saying church is the ONLY place God exists is like saying Thanksgiving is the place and time to be thankful. God is everywhere and thanks should be contemplated at all times as all of us located in the States or Western Europe are bloody fortunate and we live like Gentry …

I guess you really can't make anyone enjoy anything... but as for sharky_machine, i have to say: you don't know what you're missing.

No, I know what I'm missing. Thanksgiving is in the attitude of life and the heart.

The tradition:

  • Thanksgiving food: Not my fave.
  • Family: I really have none.
  • Football: I don't watch sports.
  • Beer: I don't drink.

I wish all who celebrate it a festive time. I guess I just prefer Christmas better. :)

Happy Thanksgiving. I do not really celebrate the American tradition (my girlfriend is going to her family's house up the street for dinner tomorrow night-- they eat around 10 PM, not so early per tradition-- she is Cuban and their meal is a bit different, actually much better than your typical holiday fare. I will be here on the computer smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee :cheesy: then will probably enjoy left-overs brought back from her Mom's house. I am very thankful for so much in my life, but the tradition-- I can take it or leave it, I guess.

Aces High by Iron Maiden

There goes the siren that warns of the air raid
Then comes the sound of the guns sending flak
Out for the scramble we've got to get airborne
Got to get up for the coming attack.

Jump in the cockpit and start up the engines
Remove all the wheelblocks there's no time to waste
Gathering speed as we head down the runway
Gotta get airborne before it's too late.

Running, scrambling, flying
Rolling, turning, diving, going in again
Run, live to fly, fly to live, do or die
Run, live to fly, fly to live. aces high.

Move in to fire at the mainstream of bombers
Let off a sharp burst and then turn away
Roll over, spin round and come in behind them
Move to their blindsides and firing again.

Bandits at 8 o'clock move in behind us
Ten me-109's out of the sun
Ascending and turning our Spitfires to face them
Heading straight for them I press down my guns.

Rolling, turning, diving
Rolling, turning, diving, going in again
Run, live to fly, fly to live, do or die
Run, live to fly, fly to live, aces high.

If I could only transfer my bookmarks from FF to IE7. :-|

I just did this a few days ago. Before I try to explain, though, I suggest you find some definitive steps on the Net about this. But this is what I did (I think ;) )

  • You need to save a copy of your FF bookmarks as a HTML file. I believe you can do this under 'manage bookmarks' (or something similar in FF)
  • After FF bookmarks are saved as HTML file: open IE7-> goto "+*" (plus-star icon) on IE7 Favorites toolbar -> select "Import and Export..." from this drop-down list -> select and Import your saved HTML, boomark file

Is this what you were asking about? Hope it helped. Worked great for me.

Hey guys, ive been reading all your threads and replies on how to get a runescaoe account unlocked again, i have tried the "appealing an offence/ban", and have not succeeded, i have looked on the runescape home page many times for the "contact jagex" or "about us" but have not found anything, i was told by a freind to "wait for the jagex people to investigate and by a week or so i would have my account back" a week has came and gone and i dont have my account back, i would really appreciate it if one of you guys could help me :)

I imagine the moderators of Runescape accidently ban players all the time or without due reason-- :-|
When dealing with such a large amount of players the mods are surely overwhelmed by the decisions they must make to ban players and even more overwhelmed by these banned players appeals to become unbanned. Your wait may take a while if it is resolved at all.

Oh, I did not see the poll. I voted for Electronica && Metal-- I guess it let me do that LOL.

Yes, most vid game mp3's I find are not great quality and actually quite twitchy and chirpy, but I do love them so. I suffer through their imperfections, unlike any other mp3's that must be reasonably perfect to be burned for my library.

I like many types of music and have gone through many transitions over the years. I always come back to 80's Goth\ New Wave stuff (Sisters, The Cult, New Order) that I grew up with through high school. It always takes me to a nice place. I listened to Rap for many years (up until this Summer), but I came to the point where I realized its degenerate and violent\ Masochistic lyrics were just too much to tolerate anymore. I had to put it down. I still love the beats and the synths of Rap though.

I think eventually I will just listen to Classical (and Iron Maiden ;) )

What kind of music do "geeks" listen to, while performing their geeky duties?

As a half-geek, I prefer rolling trancey bass-like techno-esque outings by bands such as the Prodigy, and hella-hardcore pulse techno like Angerfist. However, I may be caught enjoying a bit of evokative ultra-cheese pop, by the likes of Apoptygma Berzerk and Echo Image. At times, I may listen to re-jigged techno-classical. And sometimes, hard-rock/metal; System of a Down, Stratovarius, maybe even Cradle-of-Filth.

As a favorite, it's gotta be techno-dash-trance, but, it's gotta be just right...

Cast your votes.

When I code I only usually listen to Iron Maiden. Empowering, epic, brilliant. Overall I like:

  • Mozart
  • Ian Brown (The Stone Roses)
  • The Sisters of Mercy
  • Buckethead
  • Duran Duran
  • Prince
  • The Grateful Dead
  • Led Zeppelin
  • Syd Barrett
  • Tiger Army
  • Coheed and Cambria
  • The Cure
  • The Pogues
  • Tom Waites
  • FisherSpooner
  • Beastie Boys
  • The Petshop Boys
  • RAMMSTEIN
  • Music from video games: Final Fantasy, Vagrant Story, Brave Fencer Mushashi, RuneScape
  • Everything (EVERYTHING) 80's

Just to name a very few...

I have always been a fan of FireFox. Not only a fan but a heated supporter of FireFox in comparison to Internet Explorer. Most of the time I felt very justified in this stance. Mozilla: less bugs, more plug-ins, a myriad of themes and customization. Robust programming. A challenge to the juggernaut, Microsoft. This I felt until the latest (and I felt finest) release of FireFox landed on my harddrive; at first it was a magnificent upgrade to an already fine app. That is until the bugs revealed themselves: lost favorites, no homepage loaded on boot, the disabling of some of my fave non-Mozilla apps I use everyday. Enough was enough.

I ventured to try the rumored new release of Internet Explorer, and do you know what-- it is quite nice. It is designed to fully operate with my XP, not try to run just enough then contradict its priority. A browser is only just that-- a browser.

The Open Source community will issue diatribes against Microsoft (and many are justified) but after my experience(s) with Unix\Linux, I find these operating systems almost unbearable to work with and remain productive. Many would argue otherwise. I pray I am never paid to work on such a system professionally. But, maybe I will change my view someday with the correct exposure and qualified teachers\mentors.
