I have a Dell Inspiron 4100, sorta old, and suddenly the 'a,s,d,f,j,k,l' keys don't work. The 'g and h' work fine. Upper case on these doesn't work either. This is stopping me from typing my password to connect to the internet so I can work on this. This message is coming off of my newer laptop. I've downloaded new drivers for the old laptop with no apparent harm and certainly no help. Any advice as to what to do next?

Thanks.

I strongly suspect that the device is simply wearing out. Often as the components wear out, they show intermittent problems. For example, I had a wireless router that started dropping connections from time to time. There was no rhyme nor reason to it. Then one day it just died for good. No more wireless (wired worked fine though).

Thanks. I think you're right. I'm just glad the cost of this 'wear out' is nominal. I'll just get a new one.

Like any electronic device, a can and do wear out.

Have you tried switching USB ports?

Sincerely,
Nate

Yes. Still intermittantly goes banannas! I really don't understand the return to normal if 'age' is doing in my device.

Do laser mice wear out? My logitech wireless laser mouse is about a year old and has become hesitant and occasionally, won't work at all. Later in the day, it works fine. The only thing I've learned from installing new batteries, cleaning USB connectors, cleaning lens on laser, etc. is that it seems to work better on solid color mouse pads than on those with various scenes, or logos on it. Could the laser be getting old. Batteries make no difference to my observation. The other quirky problem is that it malfunctions more readily with my wife using it than when I do--tho once it gets jerky, no hand seems to fix it. Any ideas?

I'm going to buy a new mouse 'cause they don't cost much, but I'm curious why this one is malfunctioning. Thanks.

There is some problem with the power of laptop and desktop computer.there will be a adapter for the hard drive. If you got it, then plug the adopter in External hard drive and then plug it to the computer or Laptop.I hope when External HDD will get extra power it will start working.

Good idea. Now the desktop sees the est HD and all works OK. The laptop still doesn't apparently see the external. Laptop is plugged in and ext HD is plugged in to its power source. Laptop still makes a noise when plugged into est HD, but can't see it when I open 'computer'. I'm using Vista Home Premium, 32. Any other ideas?

I have a 360G ext hard drive which I formatted, partitioned and used to backup both my laptop and desktop aabout a week ago. Now when I plug it in to my same laptop or desktop, neither of them seem to see the drive--tho the laptop makes a sound when plugging in the USB connector. Ext drive is humming away and has an indicator light that suggests it's getting power thru the USB port (I've tried 2 or 3 ports on each computer) so I think the ports and the cable are OK. This is driving me crazy! After the backups, I was able to see the files on the ext hard drive and access them on both computers, but not now.
Thanks for any help.

I recently sent a document out from Microsoft Works Word Processor on my Vista, and several friends couldn't open it, as it had an ".wps" extension. How can I send documents with a ".doc" extension instead? I'd like to make this a default setting, but can't seem to find the right way.

Thanks.

My new Dell 2408WFP is working fine, but it will rotate to the vertical position---why? I can't seem to find a way to make the display any different than its classical horizontal position. I feel stupid.
Thanks

Thanks! The google advice was great, 'cause I found that the printer and the monitor I am purchasing have 64 bit drivers avalable. You've been very helpful.

Sorry, 64 bit version of Vista, hopefully upgradable to Windows 7 in a year or so when bugs worked out.

I'm buying a new 64 bit system and am nervous about the availability of drivers for new printers (also buying that) and will all new monitors work with the 64 bit system. In reading the forums, it seems as if there are significant problems if the peripherals are older. Any help appreciated.
