WOW, literate and well-read -- ftw, are you doing here?
Just kidding - welcome.
Do not forget that anywhere in the string that if a numeral is smaller than the one that comes next, it is subtracted from the the one that comes next:
#
if roman[0] >= roman[1]:
#
arabic = roman[0] + roman[1]
Else
arabic = roman[1] - roman[0]
Or something like that.
Just being my pedantic self, you are changing inputted Roman Numerals to Hindi numbers- the Arabs borrowed the numbers from India (in Arabic they are known as 'Indian numbers' - arqa-m hindiyyah)
Welcome - wow! From Pakistan - all sorts of questions come immediately to mind but I will just smile and say "hi". I hope you enjoy your visit here.
Businesses will spend $13.6 billion on security software this year. This does not include costs for labor, services and hardware.
The worm "Conficker", exploiting the usual weaknesses in Microsoft's Windows operating system, resides in up to 12 million computers worldwide turning them into slaves. Slaves ready to spread the worm to other PCs. Ultimately the worm will be used to spy on critical data.
I heard some more details the other day - it has a list of thousands of ip addresses; it randomly checks a couple hundred each day until it gets its instructions. Of course, security guys are checking the sites too. I imagine that somewhere a program is randomly choosing to post instructions to these site then deleting them until 'conficker' gets its instructions which could be keyloggers or spam or whatever.
Do not buy a laptop to play games - the graphics just are not able to keep up with gaming demands. There is not enough cooling and you can't upgrade the graphics card.
I thought I would revive this old thread because the US Navy has revived the old 'cold fusion' experiments. I am looking at some of the links - the second has a lot of alternate theories of what they are seeing.
It is commonly believed that greedy hunters over-harvested the passenger pigeon and drove them to extinction. At one time flocks of p.p. would blot out the sun; they were hunted with shotguns as large as 4 and 6 gauge (never shoulder-fired, fired either from a hip pad or against a tree (see note1)). The truth is they were hunted to extinction on purpose; they were a pest. If you consider the sky filled with a flock of birds, consider also the ground covered with a layer of bird-doo 3 to 6 inches deep. Crops were destroyed either by being eaten or, later in the season, buried 6 inches deep in poo. Imagine if they still existed - think about that one 'hit' of bird doo that gets on your car, then think about coming out and finding 4 inches of doo covering your entire car. Odds are we would never have allowed that kind of mess - they never had a chance.
(note1 - the gauge of a shotgun is determined by number of round balls of bore-sized lead that makes a pound; ie 6 gauge = 1/6th of a pound of lead shaped into a ball just fits into the bore)
No it does not blow global warming out of the water. You want something more interesting try reading this. I will repeat the last line for you:
The picture is much more complex than you can imagine.
Europe has to redraw the borders of the countries around the Alps because the borders were drawn on ice ridges that are no longer there. The borders will have to be drawn on actual dirt.
Huge chunks of the Greenland glaciers are 'calving' - 'calving' faster than the ice can be replaced; chunks of glacier the size of mid-sized US states are breaking off.
In a few years, there will not be enough ice around the North Pole to support polar bears.
Glacier National Park in Montana will soon not have a glacier.
Mt. Rainier used to have glaciers that were so close the trails that we could go 'caving' in ice caves just a little hike away from the parking lot - most of those glaciers are gone.
There will shortly be a northwest passage.
Russians, Canadians, all the countries around the arctic circle are racing to stake claims.
The guy came to a complete stop at a red light - saw that there was no traffic, turned his emergency flashers and went through the traffic light. The cop called it in as attack with a motor vehicle (for the clear and present danger as excuse for the chase). He pulled a gun on them (but later put it away). He stopped them at a hospital and had to tell the guy all the reasons he could arrest him and tow his car.
Maybe the cop would have behaved the same way with anyone he had pulled over. But I am sorry, I just don't see a good ole boy running that shit on a good ole boy at the door of a hospital. It was pure power play on someone who was powerless.

Are you talking about Program-Z that is 'pandorabot'?
If you have ZoneAlarm, you can prevent Program-Z from 'phoning home'.
Hello and welcome! I hope that you get help with your problem.
Rinu - Hi! thank you for posting - I have looked at your blog-site and the process explorer interests me so I dl-ed and may get around to looking at it in the week or so.
Welcome!

I post my doubts and thoughts here
will I post again?
Back when Montana did not have a speed limit (well, the posted limit was 'reasonable and prudent') some car companies decided that would be a good place to do those 5-car bumper-to-bumper road trips there at 100 mph. Only bumper-to-bumper is neither reasonable nor prudent and they got speeding tickets, reckless driving tickets AND EPA violations tickets (probably apocryphal).
I grew up driving 70 - 90 mph on 'improved' roads (means they have paved shoulders) with only one lane in each direction. We once had an old '57 Chevy up to 145 mph - the windshield wipers ripped right off. The last time I went back (before they actually set a real speed limit at 70 but generally you have to be going 90 or above to get their attention) I have my old '88 Corolla Al-Trac up to 124 mph before my survival instincts kicked in and I realized I was no longer 18 and immortal.
# The world's fastest speeding ticket allegedly was issued in 2003 in Texas, when the driver of a Swedish-built Koenigsegg went 242 mph in a 75 mph zone.
Sometimes, sitting here in Seattle, I think that we live in a post-racial world. Then I see this and think 'where is the humanity?'. I can't imagine what it is like to have to say 'yes sir', 'no sir', 'I hope you will be nice sir' while my m-i-l is on her death-bed just a hundred yards away.
Sigh! My outrage will fade but 'driving while ethnic' will remain a crime.
Hey! check out this build-it-yourself kit. Those 3 glowing blue cases are built from the Lubik kit - I have seen an airplane and many really weird sculptures built from these kits. You have to have the plans worked out in complete detail before you start.
I wonder if they have a different message/humorous message for each region? Anyone from Asia, Africa, or -- come to think of it, what are the different regions? Didn't they break the world into different regions so that they could sell movies cheaper in, say, Africa and not have to worry about Americans getting cheap movies?
Maybe they outsourced the production? If they just give the dolls out, they only have to give out all the dolls then claim that it was 2500.
Oddly, here in Seattle, when the Mariners gave out Ichiro dolls some entrepreneur gave free game tickets to a bunch of homeless guys in exchange for the dolls and then sold them on the E-bays. Caused a real stink locally.
I thought the difference between ideal, hypothesis, and theory was the first thing they taught/reviewed in any science related class?
Thank you! My brain is a musty, cobwebby place with many nooks and crannies - I had misplaced Idea/Conjecture and sorely missed it in one of my previous posts.
Wouldn't that make religion a conjecture? Because the description I gave is also like a religion in its own way saying that humans decended from achients just like a religion would say humans decended from god.
Actually, religion is a belief system rather than a knowledge system. The lamest thing I see day to day is someone trying to link the latest scientific theory with the latest trendy religious belief. This was especially common in the 1970s when all the 'scientists' with a smattering of science and smattering of Eastern philosophy tried to prove the one with the other - see "Dancing Wu Li Masters" or anything by Fritjof Capra. These are good books in their own right, it is just that you can't hang religion on the latest scientific thought; scientific thought changes, is modified as it adjusts to what it finds in the universe. They are completely different systems that may or may not overlap.
There are so many different random thoughts about who we are and where we come from that you can, if you want, just toss yours onto that pile over there - it is neither religious nor scientific nor even a system; it is just a thought and a not very original thought at that. Go find an old used-book store and get a copy of any piece of crap by Erich von Däniken.
I just realised that this thread relates to a movie series called Stargate. For all we know there could be a burried stargate in egypt where 10000 years ago the achients could have enhabited the planet and transported species from a variety of planets from the universe. Crazy theory but very possible just like any other theory.
Sorry, that is not a theory - it is barely a hypothesis. In order for a really bad thought like that to 'evolve' from a bad hypothesis to a bad theory, it has to be supported by a fact. Somewhere someone has to find something to support it before it can even become a 'true' hypothesis.
Here is another bad thought - you exist somewhere in the real world and are really lame enough to think that this kind of thinking has value. If you do not understand the word 'theory', how can you come up with one?
Hi Jenny - welcome. Find a nice section of the forum and settle in; dig around, there is plenty to do if you are interested.
You can always try Schick Electro-Shock(tm) - they actually put electrodes on your (non-smoking) wrist, attach a pull-string to the little finger of the hand you smoke with, and you get a shock every time you bring the cigarette to your lips. You get a 'pot' (potentiometer) to adjust the strength of the shock. I set it as high as i could stand and watched my left hand spasm while I smoked.
That got old pretty fast - spastic fingers only go so far before the pain gets pretty overwhelming so I started 'watching' the pain while I smoked. I have been tobacco-free for 20 years (except that bout with Cuban cigars mentioned earlier).
This should be a big winner for E-bay - you gotta go to this game and get one (would you get one for me, too?). "Count von Count" - way to go Saints!!
It was designed for a specific result - I could not answer most of the questions.
So - here is the scientific answer, the LD50 for caffeine is 192 mg/kg (rat, oral). This means that's the dosage that will kill half the rats tested. How well this translates to LD50 for humans is left up to the scientific curiosity of the individual.
IBM was at one time the 3rd largest publisher in the world; they published all their own manuals and docs.
JB or Agress - have you ever visited (Captain Sir) Richard Francis Burton's tomb down in the MortLake district? He is buried in St. Mary's churchyard in a tomb built like his African explorer tent (it has a ladder in the back with a plexiglass sheet covering an opening so you can see the his and hers caskets, tent bells, and an old wooden crucifix that has rotted and broken in half).
That is too fantastic to believe. 1000 soldiers would have to kill 1748 people in one hour, and 10,000 would still have to kill 174.8 in one hour. And that's not even mentioning how difficult it would be to find that many people who are in hiding (unless they were really, really dumb). That number of people may have disappeared as a result of being conquered, but many probably relocated out of fear. It sounds more like a horror story spun by the conquered, or Genghis Khan himself to instill fear. If anyone less lazy than me wants to dig up anything more on this, please post it.
After the husband of Genghis Khan's daughter was killed at Nishapur in 1221, she ordered the death of all in the city (~1.7 million), and the skulls of men, women, and children were piled in pyramids by the Mongols.
JS Bach had 20 kids! They were all musical - many also wrote music. It is thought that more than 50% of Bach's music was lost to:
1) His widow who used some sheets to wrap glassware when she moved
2) She also used some to line shelves.
3) but most were lost to his kids who thought the old man's music was old fashioned and they rinsed the paper clean and used it to write their own music.
And if NicAx64 had read some of those spam - his English skills might have improved, somewhat.
But, you know, I like techno but I really prefer industrial, ambient and some house.
Bring back KraftWerk
Sure, Japan started out as our source of cheap labor and manufacturing. As they caught up with us we both outsourced to S.Korea, then everybody outsourced to China and India. Done correctly, everybody wins while we lift them up; done badly, we have a race to the bottom.
I just got one the other night that was only one sentence long! Maybe their copy-paste fingers are getting tired.
Welcome - sorry about the stony silence. I heard that since they cleaned up all the dust out of the air - the famous London Fog has disappeared, is this true? I remember back in 1990 that some locals were already complaining that they just did not get fog anymore!?
