...yes BIOS will show video card memory first when PC boots.....
system RAM appears in control panel/system/general right at the bottom with the processor

I still think you should try a repair install with the windows disk first, I dont know 'system mechanic', I'll stick with what I know

can you not shutdown by holding the power button until it turns off? rather than pulling power and perhaps damaging your hard drive?

best off just moving some big files to DVD (videos, music whatever) or other non volatile memory
remove any applications you don't use any more
if your drive is full of temporary files and such you need to check your configuration, this might help too

if this is a pc you could add a second hard drive?
