Hi gallopers, welcome to Daniweb. It has been a while, but back in the early 1980's I used to work as a manager for United Racecourses here in the UK, based at Sandown Park racecourse. The company were also responsible for the Epsom Derby, so it was great fun to be a manager there each year, running one of the enclosures.

It was a good time to be involved with the sport as I got to see, and pat, some of the great horses such as Red Rum and Desert Orchid for example.

Anyway, WRT your original posting. You should head over to the Web Development area where you'll find forums to cover eveything you need, including a lounge area just for web development related chat.

Hi larytet, welcome to DaniWeb. With your experience I suspect you will be a great asset to the community here, and hopefully we will be able to help you out of a hole every now and then as well.

Well, what can I say? France had a good first half and then played like England for the second.

They still deserved to win though, I thought that Portugal were going to bring Greg Louganis on as a substitute at one point, such was the amount of diving they were doing. Absolutely disgraceful, if you ask me, and the main thing wrong with the game at this level.

Still, France vs. Italy should be a good match if the French lift their game like they did against Brazil and the Italians don't revert to form and play their usual defence heavy strategy.

I can't help thinking that Germany vs. Brazil would have been the ideal final though. Brazil for the sheer flair, and Germany to see how their game would be lifted by being the home team.

Silly thing is, I'm not even a football fan. Can't stand the domestic game in England, far too boring. Only watched the World Cup becuase my 8 year old son is a keen school footballer and one has to do the father/son thing. And my soon to be son-in-law is a professional footballer (goalkeeper) so I have pressure from my eldest daughter to take an interest.

After the superb game last night, which I am glad didn't go to penalties as I hate a match being decided like that, I am now torn between supporting France and Italy.

I guess I will wait and see if France can conjure up a performance anywhere near like that against Brazil, if they can then I will probably get my onions and garlic out. Otherwise I will watch the final with salami in hand :)

No false modesty, I honestly didn't even consider you might be referring to me!

But thanks anyway :)

Hi nataraj, welcome to DaniWeb. This isn't really the right place to be asking such questions - you'll get a much more helpful response in the appropriate forum (software development / C and C++ ?)

Hi sunilfromindia, welcome to DaniWeb. ASP.NET huh? Rather you than me :)

Hi sukhi, welcome to DaniWeb and good luck with the BCA.

Hi haidabalaji, welcome to DaniWeb.

This isn't really the right place to be asking tech questions, it's just somewhere to introduce yourself to the DaniWeb community.

Explore the forum categories, find the appropriate place and post your question there (with a little more detail of what language or script you need help with) and you'll get a much better response.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Hi kelinore, to get posting simply find the appropriate forum (just explore the categories and you'll find the right place for every question) and hit the 'post new thread' button when you are ready.

Hi 7ton (great nick BTW, what's the story behind it?) welcome to DaniWeb.

Hi tallgirl (just how tall, are you Amazonian?), welcome to DaniWeb.

You've certainly come to the right place if you want help, just explore the forums and fire away in the most appropriate place.

Have fun...

I probably hate politics as much as you hate tattoos. :)

But I am happiest when driving either my Jaguar XJ8 or Toyota Supra Twin Turbo (the two automobile loves of my life, at the moment), listening to Morrissey or REM, and getting tattooed. Not all at the same time though

It’s been 10 years since my last tattoo, but I’m currently 8 hours into the new work with at least 18 hours left to go on my right arm/chest. Am having a full sleeve based upon organic growth of black/grey and red roses entwining my arm from wrist to chest, working their way around the existing images of Mother Nature/The Goddess (my own designs from more than a decade back) and a Celtic interpretation of a three layer pentangle. In the gaps will be small and brightly colored bees, butterflies and dragonflies. Also, a poppy flower and a violet flower (my youngest daughter is called Poppy Violet.)

Once that arm is done my striving for balance in life demands that I continue with the left sleeve, also around existing Goddess imagery and a flaming yin yan, but this time based upon a pattern of tree leaves incorporating an ancient Pagan ‘Green Man’ face within. The spaces will feature caterpillars, worms and spiders this side, and there will be acorns for my son whose name is Billy Aiken (which is Middle English for ‘little oak’ or literally in the image of his father.)

I have the most wonderful lady tattoo artist who does the work freehand. She …

I guess you could call me one of the judges, but only in so far as I'll be one of many people in the moderating team who will put forward the short-list of blogs for everyone else to vote upon. At the end of the day, it will be the DaniWeb community who will judge the competition and decide upon the winner.

However, personally speaking, what I look for in a blog is consistency and quality of posting. Being able to keep up a regular flow of interesting, informative and thought provoking postings is key.

My only tip would be to write passionately about the things you are passionate about! Share your opinions honestly and enthusiastically, and above all else enjoy your writing!

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Why such a big smile for England being out? Not that they played well, but then neither did Portugal: neither deserve to win the title. Which is OK becuase Portugal certainly don't stand a chance against France if you go by the form of each team.

Seriously, the French played the best football so far in the whole tournament against Brazil. That game would not have been out of place as the final.

My prediction: Germany vs France in the final, with France winning on the day (probably extra time or penalties though.)

Release your inner blogger, and you could be a winner with DaniWeb

Ever thought about starting a blog right here on DaniWeb and can’t think why you haven’t?

Ever wondered if anyone would really be interested in what you have to say about IT?

Ever dreamed about getting all your thoughts ‘out there’ to share with the DaniWeb community, and beyond, outside of the normal forum environment?

Ever hoped someone would come along and give you the gentle prod needed to get started?

Now is your chance to shine, with the inaugural DaniWeb blogging competition. Starting right now, right here, everybody who blogs in July will have a chance to win the coveted ‘Blogger of the Month’ title and a prize of an Amazon.com gift certificate to the value of $250.

Let me repeat that: start blogging now and you could win a $250 cash value prize.

Here’s how it will work.

All blog postings made during the month of July 2006 will be read by the moderator team here at DaniWeb, who will nominate those blogs that they think worthy of consideration for the title and the prize. This will be on the basis of both the quality of the postings and their popularity as determined by views and comments. Quality will win over quantity ever time, but a blog is something that needs regular input so bear this in mind.

The short listed blogs will be announced …

Cool, that's my type of thinking. I have the best job in the world as a tech journalist because it means I am always being exposed to and therefore learning about new stuff. The best type of commission for me is one which is pitched just above my comfort level so I can attain new knowledge and then pass it on to others. Sheer bliss...

My name is Scott Gulliver and I am a:

  • Space Geek

HeHe, I never used to be, per se, until I was invited as a guest of EUTELSAT to the launch of their W3 satellite (which was 1999 I think). Everything was way cool from travelling over with the EUTELSAT directors in a DC10 as one of just 20 people aboard, through to the arrival fireworks party in a zoned off area of Disneyland, and of course the VIP treatment from NASA.

I ended up sitting alongside the EUTELSAT and Lockheed directors to watch the actual launch, much closer than I had expected.

It really was a trip of a lifetime, and one of those times when you say 'thank the Goddess I'm a journalist.'

After that I took an interest in space stuff and there's been no looking back :)

Whohoo you can count me in, what about the Microsoft campus in Reading?

Good idea.

I've got contacts with the PR people for all the major tech players in the UK, sol there is always the chance of some kind of corporate sponsorship/tie-in to help with venue.

Another idea I had was something at the Museum of Computing in Swindon, for example...

Shame that someone already has pimpyourpsp.com which isn;t being used in quite the bling bling manner you might expect. Otherwise you could have started a craze and hitch a ride on the current iPod pimping publicity for pimpyaplayer.com and had some fun at the same time.

My white PSP is more boring now that you can actually buy them in the UK, rather than import them from Japan like I had to way back when. Maybe I'll spray paint it metallic gold and add a few fake diamonds, or maybe not huh :)

I used to be known as Wavey Davey for many years online, and off for that matter, and some people still call me 'Wavey' when they see me in the street.

However, I kind of outgrew the personality as I matured into Happy Geek.

Having said that, and the point of this posting, I often describe myself as being a Word Monkey...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Sorry, British sense of humour...

A big person would squash a mouse if ridden competitively, hence the assumption of a small person. Mind you, I've never seen a mouse race, so I'm only guessing.

Hmmm, would it make sense to wait until theres a decent amount of interest then look at the spread of people before we decide on a city? I don't know London too well so can't really reccomend a venue.

Oh, for sure.

I was really just getting an idea of interest as we go along, sort of a running debate WRT location if you like.

Hello Dave, you're my wife now.

Sorry, the avatar got the better of me :)

What would you reckon to a Xmas party type affair, held somewhere suitably geeky in London?

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

This would be the first DaniWeb UK meet, as far as I am aware, so there is no history to draw upon.

However, another UK community I am part of (Compulink Information eXchange - better known as CIX) has an annual members BBQ which is organised by and for the membership. It is hugely successful, with hundreds of members turning up each year with their families in tow.

Of course, the lack of any response other than from you and I might suggest that a DaniWeb UK meet might not be a huge gathering. :)

Let's wait and see if any momentum builds in the coming weeks.
