This thread saddens me. You guys (with the possible exception of ~s.o.s~), need to taste some real anime and stop talking about some of the crap that's been dubbed.

Only ~s.o.s~? :'( But yes, this thread is really funny when everyone comes up naming stuff from Cartoon Network or their local equivalent. :P

How does it not break?

I don't chew food. :P Actually, I don't know... do they usually break? Doesn't seem to really put much wear on it. Maybe mine's built a little different since I have to wear it all the time...

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

yeah i just use "all music" as i only have music i like in my media library (and on the laptop for that matter)

I like all my music too, but out of the 4500 songs I have, lots of them don't go well with others. I prefer to have several different playlists for different moods.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Well ~ I hate the way iTunes protects all of the music so you can't convert it into MP3 to work on other players, that's why i hate iTunes, i only use it to convert music my mates send me.

All my music is in MP3 format so I can move it around my computers/OSs as I want. Of course, getting stuff from the iTunes store comes in their protected format, but ripping from CD to MP3 isn't a problem.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

iTunes is easier to navigate around. It was originally a Mac program, and what is easier to use that a Mac program? ;)

I can't stand Mac interfaces. They're so difficult to use. Windows and Linux are both much easier.

And I'm only being 1/2 sarcastic. But iTunes is pretty well done.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I'd expect it to be illegal. I know it is for Microsoft employees to do that. I'd be surprised for it to be different elsewhere.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

The radiation levels were a measurement of when the phone was actively being used for talking. I'm pretty sure that it's significantly less when they're just sitting in your pocket.

That said, there's enough radiation going around from wireless networks, TV and radio stations, cell phone towers, and even computer monitors that we'll probably have enough problems whether or not you keep your phone in your pocket.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I wear my retainer all the time. I even eat with it in, which I probably shouldn't but it's easier IMHO.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I figure out how to make a playlist, but hunting down songs to put on it was a huge pain. In iTunes you can just make a list and say stuff like "All songs with genre X and rating Y" or "All songs with artist X, or artist Y, or also on playlist Z" or somesuch. AFAIK WMP doesn't have anything of that sort.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I am so totally done with school in 2 weeks :P

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I also prefer iTunes. Does WMP have a playlist creation functionality like iTunes'? I couldn't easily find one after a few hours and gave up on the program.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

>One of my friends was talking about some anime that is called Helsing or something.
Hellsing was almost decent. I liked the premise, but it was too short and I couldn't get over the awful design of Seras. The character is interesting, but the big boobs miniskirt style killed my interest in her.

Just wondering, have you read the manga or watched any of the OVAs yet?

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

You mean the iGoogle homepages? Did they change anything over the last couple months?

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I had braces for 4 years, got a retainer, broke it and didn't get a new one for a month, then ended up getting braces for another year and a half. Still wearing a retainer for the last 4 years too. I'm missing a tooth, so I can't get rid of the retainer until I get an implant.

i live in canada and over here we pay like 1 dollar

... per litre. Volume is important for comparing prices. :P

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

If you want to know how the components work, wikipedia is probably sufficient (or maybe too detailed). A book on computer organization (weird term, I know) might also be of interest. It partly depends on what level of "how it works" you're looking for. I could also try to volunteer some information via PM if you're looking for something specific, although I've basically listed my sources :P

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I would respond, but I don't know anything about going into IT per se. Most of the others are probably the same. You might try one of the more IT-specific forums.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

haha, I remember when the Sacajawea coins came out (back in 2000). We'll see how these do. Ironically, my roommate was just showing them to me a few minutes ago :P

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I'm thinking about actually getting a hybrid for my next car. Although a lot of people say it's the same. You pay a couple thousand more on the car because it's a hybrid but you would be paying that amount anyway a year for gas. I don't know though.

I remember someone saying at one point that it took like 5-8 years for a hybrid to break even (the extra cost up front vs. the savings on gas). Of course, gas was cheaper then, but it still holds some small amount of truth.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

aw, they're just kids. they'll grow out of it :icon_rolleyes:

that was sarcastic btw...

Yes, the use of & is optional in this case. Similarly, when calling the function *foo() and foo() will also be the same.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I don't see the word screen anywhere in his post...

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

broken links? see them all the time... :P

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Hmmm.... thats when XP reaches end of mainstream support/ gets SP3 as well sint it?

On that topic, do you reackon XP SP3 will have any new content (lol aero) or whether it wil just be arollup of all the post SP2 hotifxes and updates.

I doubt they'd roll much new stuff into XP. It's old, weary, and ready for retirement. And so much has changed going to Vista that it'd be a lot of work to change things around again for an older and soon-to-be dead product, I doubt they'd want to expend the resources on it. SP3 will most likely be a bunch of patches since SP2 and possibly a few new changes but with Vista out already I don't think there'll be much more effort going into XP

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Canadian dollars are not the equivalent of American dollars.

Anymore, they're not too far off though. A lot of the difference is probably due to the different methods of taxation, with possibly a little bit due to the good ol' days where the US dollar went a lot further...

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Yes, you need to do it. You should also read some of the rules.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Don't complain. Up here, the dollar/gallon works out to be around $3.80 USD. Fortunately, diesel is usually about 25 cents cheaper than gasoline.

Yeah, the last time I went on a fishing trip up to Canada, we were paying a little over $4/gal as I recall. Of course, it was a pretty secluded region, but still very expensive.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Used to be here, but it's actually more expensive now. Silly, because diesel is cheaper to manufacture and diesel cars get [typically] extremely good mileage.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Prices here in and around Seattle tend to be about $3.45/gal for regular grade (89 octane IIRC).

As to the pricing, there are costs for refining, adding additives, and distributing the product, but the costs at the pump don't ever seem to waver with the price of oil very much. I can't remember who said it, but someone put it best saying that the price of oil is down, but the gas stations won't know about it for 6 months.

Btw, I've been told that California and Washington have such strict emissions laws so as to require extra-refined gasoline, which raises the costs a little bit more for us.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

It seems rushed, and in ways it was. There's a lot of changes that were put in that the entire rest of the industry wasn't (and partly still isn't) ready for. And there's always the issue of backwards compatibilty, which is obviously quite desireable, but also getting to be a very large burden.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Not a zealot, I've done at least my share of bashing. I've started to realize how much effort they put into testing their products, though, and some of their products are definitely nicer than the competition.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Also, strcmp will tell you the relative ordering of the strings rather than simply if they are equal, if you needed that as well.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Microsoft is taking [IMO] appropriate steps to improve their product. They're cutting out a lot of the old crap that's been bogging down Windows, especially from a security perspective. There are still a lot of program with which compatibility has been broken. Definitely do a little reasearch; now might be a bad time for an upgrade, depending on your needs.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

This whole incident is a crock of crap. Well, not completely, she should be in jail. For the full sentence. Without being placed in a special "high profile" area. No wonder the rich and famous don't learn their lessons...

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

C'mon guys, love not hate. I'm actually liking Vista so far... :P

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

> this is the geeks lounge, its supposed to be off topic!
And you wonder why people keep complaining about your posts... :icon_rolleyes:

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

finger is another way to find last logon time, however the finger daemon may be disabled on machines that are locked down in security. other tools such as last, and also 'who' (it has a column on the login time,) may be able to do the job as well...

Ah, didn't know about those options. Something new to be learned every day :icon_wink:

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Size of data types is architecture dependent, not compiler. For long, it is 2 * word size of the machine. The compilers just follow the specification laid down. It would be nice if someone with a copy of C++ standard could confirm this.

I believe the standard sets no rules for any type except char. I don't have a copy of it though, so take it as is.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I just use the Google Reader. With the whole personalized home page thing, it's pretty handy.

And I've heard of Joel's blog before (positive things even), but I forgot about it.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

What about your requirement that it tell the last time they logged in? Assuming that's still important, you could try this (requres finger):

#/bin/bash

if [ $# -ne 1 ]
then
echo "Need a file as input"
  exit 1
fi

while read user
do
  on=`finger $user | grep -c "On since"`
  if [ $on -gt 0 ]
  then
echo "user $user is logged in"
  else
    last=`finger $user | grep "Last login"`
echo "user $user not logged in. $last"
  fi
done < $1

Yes, that was me that mentioned ethanol. If it's not energy efficient then why is it included in the Energy Policy Act of 1992?

I'll straight out admint that I'm not very knowledgable about it, but I think ethanol emissions are cleaner than fossil fuels.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

>I am thinking of watching the Getbackers next
I never really got into that one. But like other series I never really got into, I have it for when I have some spare time. It might grow on me. ;)

For me, GetBackers started out pretty funny but wore out after a little while. Kinda picked up at the end though... YMMV

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

maybe I should update now...

you guys just can't compete.

Good God, how long did that game take? :icon_eek:

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

C#: You can shoot yourself in the foot, but it's unsafe to do so.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

To make the function more secure I'd consider changing the function prototype and definition to accept only strings as input ...

Then it would just be a substr method, and not interesting at all.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Just wondering what y'alls read in your free time. Post what you've got and a brief description of it :)

I subscribe to Worse Than Failure (aka Daily WTF) which has a bunch of [hilarious] programming and development oddities, and a few Microsoft blogs.

I got a Ford Focus right now ~30mpg. I landed a job really close to home in January. I now drive 2 miles one way to work. With all my driving, I fill up once a month. The current gas prices hardly phase me.

While the mileage is nice, I find it odd that people are still impressed by these numbers (myself included). My first car was an '86 Toyota Tercel station wagon, definitely past broken in, and I got about 25-30 in it. All my cars so far have gotten about 25-30 (well... I'm not sure on the new one, I've only put gas in it once so I don't know the mileage yet...). You'd think that if we had such mileage 20+ years ago that we'd have more efficient cars, like hybrids or diesel engines (which I hear also get great mileage), everywhere by now.
