On topic:
The idea of sticking it to the oil companies is nice, but infeasible. We're completely dependent on them, and so we can't hurt them. And if they get $3 billion per day, one day isn't really going to make a difference. As mentioned, the one day's loss will be made up elsewhere anyways, although you'd have to basically shut down the entire country to even get the $3 billion effect.

Instead, we need a change in policy. There seem to be very few research projects for alternate energy sources, and many of those are still done by the oil companies. They're looking for their own interests, but they might as well exploit the advantage they have now. We should be having much higher mileage restrictions, emissions restrictions, and possibly even price controls. If you want to hurt the oil companies, make it something permanent.

i've noticed a lot of people like to pick apart christina's post at a poor attempt to look either cool or intelligent. Welcome to the Internet. More specifically, an intellectual part of it. It ain't the fun games of high school. There's a lot of witty people here. If you say something and it can be picked apart, sucks to be you. Learn from it and grow from it; at the very least, get over it, it's gonna happen. If you want to mope and whine about how hard life is, people are either going to ignore you or flame you more.

You're obviously unaccustomed to the culture here, and you're refusing to adapt to how it works. Instead you're trying to force your own culture on us. I'm currently the IT manager for my branch. The company is called Thrasher Engineering. Anyways, they have 5 offices total, and we're getting ready to implement a new WAN infrastructure along with VoIP. I'm trying every way I can to get my hands into this project, and I'm fairly certain I'll gain good ex points from it. I currently have 1.5yrs IT exp.

I've always heard exp is most desired but some companies will actually prefer a cert before a degree.

That sounds great. Especially if you're getting a CCNP. Things like implementng the new infrastructure should be mentioned somehow in your resume. Other than than, I don't really know much about what to expect or how best to proceed. Sounds like you're definitely on the right track at least.

Please don't use bold text when you post. It's meant to give emphasis to parts of a post, not the entire body; using it too much is poor netiquette. Also, please use
and
tags when posting code excerpts.

The problem is on this line: area = sqrt(s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)); You have to use * to multiply things. If you just have the parentheses, the compiler thinks you're trying to call a function. And for sqrt, put #include <cmath> at the top of your file.

ok, i just bought a new 2.6ghz acer computer, everything is fine except for 2 things really.

1. when i start diablo 2 it takes about a bit under a minute to start up for some reason, no other program has this issue. (this isn't that much of a problem but it would sure be nice to get fixed)

I've heard that sometimes running it in compatibility mode helps. Try it if you haven't; otherwise, like Ancient Dragon said, you might be SOL.

2. my mouse everyonce in a while gets kind of stuck and shoots off to the side, for example in CS when i play and the issue kicks in, it shoots my view to the sky, or to the ground instantly and i get killed etc. very anoying, anyways i would LOVE to fix these, but i think ill be better off just taking it back and getting a new computer (what a drag) but oh well

My mouse does the same on rare occasion (particularly annoying while gaming), but it's done it on Windows XP as well. I've had it happen on a couple different mice, all of them optical. Maybe it's just bad luck.

Look at degrees in IT or information systems (I think) if you're going to continue with school. And the CCIE is great to wave around and get you started. But here's the catch: the people in industry value experience over anything. A friend of mine is a network engineer at Microsoft, and I have more certifications than he does (CCNA, whoop dee do, and it expires next month). On the other hand, the guy knows his stuff, probably as good as most CCIEs in whatever he does (since the CCIE does have specializations...). As I recall, his degree is in physics or something; his credentials are based on experience. And that's what'll make the difference in the long run. I doubt you'd need a PhD at all, short of research. And you probably don't want to spend the time or money to get one at this point.

I not for death penalty for the reason that we are so ready to make mistakes. However, since we have it, in many States of USA, I don't understand why they don't show publicly what's the way these people died for their crimes. Yes, you hear, here and there that is done, but I think it would work miracles to deter futures offenders.

It might also help if it wasn't a nice peaceful death. Putting them to sleep like dogs may be a little insulting, but making it a little gruesome and publicizing it would likely have a very deterring effect.

jbennets post reminded me of something else: would it be possible to remove the blank lines or padding or whatever at the top and bottom of code blocks? Especially if they have different backgrounds, it just seems like a waste of space.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Without code in green anymore, it blended in too much with regular text, so I added a background around it.

Might you consider putting something in for inline code as well?

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

- You will now only be able to choose between red and green colors. (If there is a strong demand for it, a third color may be added). Color should only be used to add value to a post, and an entire post that's in color "just for the sake of it" will have its color stripped by mods.

Assuming the two colors are meant to emphasize "good" vs "bad", it seems like red and green are the worst you could pick from a usability perspective, if you were to consider color blindness to be a possible issue. The colored text would still be distinguished, but only from the regular black text.

I like the keyword highlighting, but I'm also too lazy to type the language so that doesn't work too well... unless each forum had the code blocks default to the appropriate language for that forum? I'm assuming that Dani isn't trying to remove all color from the site, just to standardize the colors. That is, people will not be able to color their post text, but search results or tagged code segments would still be colored as they currently are. I never use colors in my posts, and I find it moderately distracting when other people do. I'm used to CAPITAL LETTERS for emphasis or even italics, and most people on the 'net usually understand their importance. Of course, there are a few who tend to post with their caps-lock on, but it's somewhat less annoying than posting in bold, red text.

My $.02 :)

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

In the practice of the US system it is. Of course if you use my proposed system it's far cheaper to execute them.

The US system is pretty screwed up at this point though, IMHO.

of course a far more profitable way to do it (and at the same time helping society a LOT) is to dismantle the convict and use the organs and limbs for transplants.
There's an eternal shortage of transplants, and a lot of (mostly) healthy people in prisons sitting around costing money.
Those prisoners could very effectively help solve the problem of people dying in hospital for lack of organ donors.

In fact in several countries that's what convicts are used for, China for example.

I do like that idea. Forced labor isn't a bad one either, they might even offset a bit of the cost of keeping 'em around.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Ok, first, if you'd read the rules and guidelines, you'd have seen that you should post your code between
and
tags. That preserves the indentation and adds line numbers to make it easer for us to read and refer to your code. Keep it in mind for next time :icon_wink:

You've got several syntax errors, as you mentioned. Hopefully I can remember them from top down.
- Your use of N and N2 in function declarations is not allowed, since they are literal values (not variables). Also, declaring them on line 11 is not allowed for the same reason.
- Declaring the stack and queue as globals and then passing them around is somewhat silly.
- On line 18 you have a 'do' which looks out of place. I'm assuming it goes with the while on line 25, but you forgot the braces. Also, your logic in the while is backwards. You'll repeat the loop any time the user enters a value between 1 and 5. Also, you need to put parentheses around the entire condition.
- On lines 30 and 44, you have scanf("&d"... which should be scanf("%d"... .
- On lines 40 and 54, you call a function writeln which isn't defined. You probably want printf and to put a "\n" at the end of your output string.
- On each of your function definitions, you have the first parameter as an int not an int[]. Also, as mentioned, …

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Are you sure you're not American? I though we were the only ones who thought like that.:)

But more seriously, I think we should abolish the death penalty because (1) its cheaper to keep them alive, (2) the punishment lasts longer, and (3) too many innocent people have been put to death. We can always let someone out of prison who was innocent of the crime, but we can't bring him back to life.

While I certainly can't argue against number 3, I think number 1 is flat out wrong. I'll even supply 50 feet of rope if they need it, and it's reusable. Beats putting 'em in a government sponsored building for 20+ years.

However, your third point is very important. It's extremely difficult to actually execute someone when the chance does exists that they are innocent. What do you think of a system where the death penalty would be carried out after a fairly long time period? For example, if they haven't proven their innocence after 15 years, then they will face the penalty for their crimes.

Linux is well known when it comes to a server OS. However, most people don't know or care about server OSs, so Linux is currently becoming known to the general public for its progress as a desktop system.

And LAMP is not the end-all to server configurations. Sure, it works great for your home setup, but for an enterprise it's probably not the greatest solution.

Yeah, it's really cheap around those areas. It's like twenty some cents in Kuwait. You guys hear about the boycott on the fifteenth of March? Nobody's buying gas. I don't think it will work that great but I'll be a part of it.

Coincidentally, those are the areas that have a very good production rate, and (I'm assuming) no taxes on their fuel. Here in the US, we have less tax than most places (hence the reason it's so cheap here), but there's still plenty. I think it's like $0.389/gal for state taxes here, and then I'm pretty sure there's some national ones on top of that. Plus there's the costs of importing the oil, refining it (especially in states with stiff emissions requirements), and distributing it.

As for the boycott, I'll participate. I only fill up once or twice a month anyways, and I'm still at 3/4 of a tank. :P

If you're copying something, you need to allocate memory and then copy the appropriate values in. When dealing with strings, however, there's several library functions that'll help you along the way:

char* a = "hello world";
char* b;
b = strdup(a); // allocates and makes a copy of a
// ...
free(b);

Lucky? Maybe. I had to pay for everything car related (drivers ed, car, car insurance, etc...), and they weren't the nicest cars in the parking lot. I started with an '86 Toyota Tercel station wagon bought from a co-worker, then a '95 Ford Escort bought at an auction, then a '92 Nissan 240SX (sweet car if I'd been able to sink money into it) from a neighbor, and just recently a '97 VW Jetta (only because the 240SX was wrecked).

Definitely puts a different spin on it when you have to pay for everything though :icon_wink:

While I resent the stereotype that young men are crazy drivers, there is some truth to it. I know I wasn't afraid to speed through areas, although I claim that I only did so to a safe extent. The only accident I've been in was not my fault (I was T-boned when I had an obvious right of way - I was turnin left into a parking lot, and this gal was turning left out of it). On the other hand, I almost freak out when I'm riding with most any of my friends driving, speeding or not. Inexperience is probably the largest part of it, and it helps that I'm the only one of my friends that has actually owned their own vehicle (they all borrow their parents' cars on occasion; I'm on my 4th car :P).

Unfortunately, the only way to cure inexperience is to, well, get experience. On the other hand, there's also a lot of people who do things without considering the possible circumstances. I still make stupid decisions here and there, I'm just lucky enough to have not had an accident from it.

I will also note that, after a couple speeding tickets, my driving has been mostly tamed. :P
