Companies using IBM's Rational and Tivoli product will breathe easier today, thanks to new, integrated versions of nine tools that the company says will facilitate communication and closer collaboration between software development and support teams in the enterprise. What's more, prices will remain where they are, and the updates are free for current subscribers. According to the company, the integrations are intended to address individual frustration points that it sees being experienced by teams, particularly those of the geographically dispersed variety, and improve efficiency for organizations using both through automation. One of the four couplings involves Rational ClearQuest, which development …

A cyber weapon grade piece of malware, some twenty times the size of Stuxnet, has apparently been fired at a number of countries in the Middle East. This highly complex piece of code which takes screenshots of any open 'programs of interest' such as email or IM, records audio and sends large volumes of compressed sensitive data back to base, was uncovered thanks to research from Kaspersky Lab and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Described as being far more functional and far more complex than previous nation-state sponsored attacks such as Stuxnet, Flame has been found to be actively deployed …

Craigslist hosts classified ads of all kinds, including lengthy lists of developer's jobs in New York and the San Francisco Bay area. But another type of job listing was in the spotlight today, and it's nice to know there's at least one person out there who's thinking clearly. A judge in Illinois yesterday threw out a case brought against Craigslist for facilitating prostitution, simply because people listed what were alleged to be such services on the company's no-frills Websites. That would be like blaming gun makers every time someone is shot to death, or suing makers of aluminum bats for …

First Google expressed an interest in the web browser client market, and then the operating system market and now it has launched its own open source systems programming language. Google Go is being touted as 'expressive, concurrent, garbage-collected' and promises to produce fast code, fast. According to Google a typical build takes but a fraction of a second while the resulting programs run almost as quickly as comparable C or C++ code. Go has, we are told, pointers but no pointer arithmetic (for random access Google says use slices which know their limits) and promotes writing systems and servers as …

Within the next five years, Citizen Developers will be responsible for building at least 25% of all new business applications. That is the rather startling claim being made by Gartner analysts ahead of the Gartner Symposium and ITexpo in Cannes, France next month. So what is a Citizen Developer then? No, it is not somebody who creates avatars for immersive virtual world projects but rather, so says Gartner, a "user operating outside of the scope of enterprise IT and its governance who creates new business applications for consumption by others either from scratch or by composition". Eric Knipp, a senior …
