*Story happens in imaginary universe, but I'm using current time "relativation".* vmWare Player type of application (but for free). I consider adding it to Open Source because everybody is saying how great it is and how fast bugs can be fixed. There's couple stories to be told: **Side of Manager** I like the fact that everybody can contribute to our project, in order to improve it by using suggestions and trustworthy community. Therefore I posted it on GitHub. **Side of Hobbist** Hey, we're community of 10.000 active programmers. We do our jobs really well. We love this project, so we …

Recently I've stumbled on a nice tool that I really quite like, so I thought I'd share it: Personally, I love the power behind PHP. I find it a very simple to use yet possesses the techniques seen in the more complex desktop applications such as Perl/Python/C/C++/C# etc. PHP has always been restricted to server-side web applications, and unlike the others, cannot run as a desktop application – until now. I would like to share an awesome tool I’ve been using recently…
(http://www.naetech.com/php-nightrain) is a cool bit of kit: it fully supports popular frameworks such as Laravel and CakePHP, …

Hi everyone, I am looking for a free/open-source application similar to RescueTime. The features that I am looking for are automatic app tracking and optionally website tracking. Also, I would like to have the posibility to install the application on multiple computers and centralize all the statistics on a central server. Do you know of any apps that might meet these requirements or at least about open-source apps that could be adapted? Thanks in advance!

Could someone direct me to an open-source, 2D sidescrolling game developed in C++? (I'd prefer a Mario-style sidescroller, but almost any would do.) I'd like to look at the source code to see some examples of a working sidescroller collision detection system, and a jump algorithm. Thank you for your time.

Hi guys I am conducting a survey about the operating systems you use in programming. Can you please answer my survey? I need IT professionals to answer my survey as well. It will only take a minute. Here's the link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/embeddedform?formkey=dGNESDZ6NVVFdTM0SVU1blJzbFVyUHc6MQ thank you very much!

In the past, the word "JavaScript" usually triggered notions of buttons changing when you float your mouse over them, and images flashing, and silly animations happening in the web browser. Today, however, most programmers recognize that JavaScript is actually much more than that; it's a powerful language that runs in the browser, and it's the foundation of modern web-based applications. And the language itself has some very cool constructs that make it easy to write sophisticated code. People such as myself who use JavaScript extensively appreciate its functional approach to programming. But we often hit a problem when working with …

Hi, I have been trying to compile open source projects since past few months with no success. I just don't know how to go about the entire thing. Readings over the internet have not helped much. Some come with ./Configure and a Makefile while others with only a Makefile. How to use them to generate executables (or they have some other purpose :?:). My machine currently has:

Windows XP
Mingw Compiler for C/C++
Cygwin
Do I need any other software? Thanks!

With the Android developer community buzzing about how easy it is to pirate apps, one outfit took it upon itself to try and track down the pirates. The results are truly shocking. The provocatively named Android Police site last week claimed that most Android apps can be simply patched and stripped of their licensing protection. Indeed, Android Police even went as far as to produce a video demonstration entitled 'Breaking Google's Android Licensing Verification Library (LVL)' which proved just how easy it actually is. And with 49 percent of publishers making less than they had hoped for from Android development …

I am using VB.net 2008 express edition I have figured out how to use some of the code snippets for the open xml sdk to create a drop down list of all the sheets in an excel file. I can also use the code snippet to get the value of an individual column header. What I want is a drop down list of all column headers. I could create an array containing the alphabet and loop through each column based on the alphabet letter in the array. I would then just exit the loop on the first column with no …

"After years of pretending to be a friend of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), IBM now shows its true colors. IBM breaks the number one taboo of the FOSS community and shamelessly uses its patents against a well-respected FOSS project, the Hercules mainframe emulator." Those are the words of Florian Mueller, the well known software developer and open source political lobbyist and founder of the NoSoftwarePatents campaign, who accuses IBM of betraying its promise to the FOSS community and claims the company has declared patent war in order to "protect its highly lucrative mainframe monopoly against Free and Open …

First Google expressed an interest in the web browser client market, and then the operating system market and now it has launched its own open source systems programming language. Google Go is being touted as 'expressive, concurrent, garbage-collected' and promises to produce fast code, fast. According to Google a typical build takes but a fraction of a second while the resulting programs run almost as quickly as comparable C or C++ code. Go has, we are told, pointers but no pointer arithmetic (for random access Google says use slices which know their limits) and promotes writing systems and servers as …

One way to become the "ultimate" of something is to simply declare it. JetBrains, maker of the IntelliJ IDEA Java IDE, on Thursday began previewing IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate Edition, the latest version of its commercial integrated development environment for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. The "ultimate" designation is presumably to differentiate it from the Community Edition, which is now available as open source. The company had previously offered a free version if IntelliJ IDEA for non-commercial use, but source code was not made available until now. Both are based on the forthcoming version 9 of the IDE, formerly code-named …
