IT Friends, Let me start by saying I am not an IT professional. Our company recently changed to a cloud based environment. We are seeing substantial efficiency loss in the calculation times of our templates (mostly excel based). It's typically only seconds per calculation, but adds up throughout the day. My current desktop has the following set up: Windows 10, Office 16, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 CPU @3.60 GHz 16.0GB RAM 64-bit operating system. I am being told that no cloud environment can match the processing speed for excel calculations of my desktop. I find that very hard to believe. Is …

I need to store videos and pictures somewhere. I host my sites on shared hosting because they don't require much power and shared hosting can handle them just fine (for now). I'm planning to create something new that requires video and picture uploading. So I need storage space to upload files, I'll lose bandwidth for displaying images/videos. I was looking at S3 and Google Cloud but they have few billing options. Can someone who is more experienced tell me which should I use and how those cloud storages work. Do they bill bandwidth and storage, what about displaying videos and …

I'm looking for a cloud based storage of up to 150 gigs / month that allows scripting and to sync from a network drive; I'm hoping someone can offer some suggestions as I've spent quite a bit of time searching & most packages are 500 gigs or 1TB /month which is far beyond what I require or have the data to spare.

Werner Vogel, Amazon Web Services (AWS) CTO, speaking at the AWS Summit in London yesterday has made the rather amazing claim that security in the cloud is "much stronger" than anything you can have on-premises. As someone who has been writing about information security for more than 20 years, and covering the cloud security beat for five, I can understand why he may say that. However, it doesn't mean that he was right; not for every customer, not for every implementation. If you are talking about the smaller end of the SME spectrum then, for the most part in my …

Security is, more often than not, a case of getting the basics right. This is certainly true of the cloud where the hyperbole surrounding insecurity far outweighs the actual risk in my opinion. Not that the cloud is an inherently secure place to store data, just that it poses similar risks to other data storage methodologies which need to be assessed and dealt with accordingly. So when I hear statistics being bandied about such as '68 per cent of employees use personal cloud storage services at work' as was thrown in my direction this last week, I cannot help but …

After graduating college around 6 years ago I was told that I should climb the ladder of certifications to increase my chances of getting a job. I often heard that a good route to take was to get the A+ ->Network+ ->CCNA ->MCSA ->MCSE. Unfortunately, I was immature at the time and never bothered to do any of that. Now that things have changed I was thinking that I should do the same route but this time with the MCITP certification (rather than MCSE), along with Security+. However, now I'm not sure what to do since it sounds like this …

Responding to the publication of a report which shows Amazon, Apple and Microsoft all scoring badly when it comes to a reliance upon 'dirty energy' to power their data centers, Apple has hit back with claims that the report over-estimates the power consumption of iCloud and projects being constructed to offset energy usage. ![dweb-icloud](/attachments/small/0/dweb-icloud.jpg "align-right") [According to Greenpeace](http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/publications/Campaign-reports/Climate-Reports/How-Clean-is-Your-Cloud/) cloud companies can grasp the opportunity to be a catalyst in so far as driving change towards cleaner electricity generation by "making better energy choice and demanding more from utility vendors" that could ultimately create a greener grid for everyone and a …

So, Microsoft has finally announced that the SkyDrive cloud storage product line is to be renamed OneDrive. This isn't as a result of disappointing user take up leading to a re-branding exercise, it's much more daft than that. Six months ago a judge in a UK court ruled that Microsoft had to drop the name after 17 people contacted BskyB, which owns the Sky TV brand, thinking it also owned SkyDrive. ![b8bbc347cb422023a9fc79e5d3569e53](/attachments/small/0/b8bbc347cb422023a9fc79e5d3569e53.jpg "align-right") This despite the fact that if those 17 hard of thinking folk had looked at the website they might just have noticed the Microsoft branding. This despite …

Hello, I don't really means what cloud computing really means. I have this article: [Cloud Computing](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_computing) "he phrase is often used in reference to network-based services, which appear to be provided by real server hardware, and are in fact served up by virtual hardware, simulated by software running on one or more real machines. Such virtual servers do not physically exist and can therefore be moved around and scaled up or down on the fly without affecting the end user, somewhat like a cloud." Such Virtual Server do not physically exist - Is that means that the Virtual Server does …

That's the surprising consensus reached at a meeting of 30 CSOs representing some of the UK's leading enterprises held in London during the past week. This despite a poll at the bi-annual CSO Interchange event revealing that those same CSOs view social networking as the most over-hyped threat. When it came to the round table discussions on the subject of social networking, however, the gathered CSOs expressed what has been called a "strong preference" for companies to consider banning them all. Well, almost all, as LinkedIn gets an exception as most of the CSOs considered that acceptable. Could that possibly …

Hello everyone, I may not be no SEO expert (yet), but during my studies of SEO, I was wondering about tag cloud generators. The reason I question these tag cloud generators is one, are they reliable in any sense and if they are, what is the one you would recommend? The reason I'm asking this is for the input of tags in our Wordpress blog and/or future articles we write.

Someone just notified me that a new free online space provider has launched, called Copy. If you know Dropbox: it's pretty much similar to that for as far as I can see now, only here you get a starting **15GB** for free (instead of 2? at Dropbox). They now have a temporary? launch action: for each person you redirect to Copy that then registers himself, both you *and* the one registering get 5GB of extra space. So therefore my idea: if anyone is interested in registering, register, then copy your share-link to this thread, and the next person who is …

I'd been using [a cloud-based IDE](https://c9.io/) some for editing snippets of code/gists (integrates with GitHub), but it occurred to me this morning that instead of just using Google Drive as cloud-repository, I might use it as a code editor. Does anyone have tips on configuring Google Docs as a <insert specific programming language here> code editor? As far as syntax highlighting needs, I'm mostly interested in C/C++ family and Prolog, but I also mess about with snippets in Ruby, Python, and Lua.

Dear all, Any advice on this matter would be greatly received. We are a web development team and have experienced so many problem with dedicated servers going down, being hacked on a public cloud and just general loss of faith in the hosting world. We need a solution to our hosting problems that will give us a 100% uptime. What are the best ways of achieving this? My research has led me to Private Clouds or Dedicated Server mirroring. None of us have server expertise so the solution has to be managed. If you know any one who is a …

Hey, I have a couple of questions about cloud computing. Now, If i connect 10 computers together in a cloud, can I consider the 10 computers to be one big computer? If i have 3 computers with 100Gb hdd each, connectet in a cloud. Can i so make a vm on 300Gb in my cloud? Is it a bad idea to have 10 computers connectet in a cloud, with one vm that controls 50000 websites? ps, I talking about a private cloud, (ubuntu enterprise cloud) Regards, Lasse
