Currently, when a member @mentions another member in their post, clicking on it opens a modal with all of the posts in that thread that were posted by the member being mentioned.

I've been told by Google AI (a very trustworthy source, to be sure) that it's horrible UX because everyone expects mentions to link to member profiles. The thing is, from an SEO perspective, linking to member profiles (which are very thin content here at DaniWeb) seems to be worse than a <button> that does not take away from the crawl budget.

So what say you, UX peeps?

Just bumping this. I'm pretty dead set (for now, at least) on the modal behavior. I'm torn whether it should be a link that is attached to a javascript event (but that allows you to open the contents of the modal in a new tab by right clicking on the link, eg. standard link behavior) or a button.

Right now it's a link that is disallowed via robots.txt. A few hundred thousand URLs and growing so far.
