Hello guys,

The problem: Windows XP won't boot up, it complains it cannot find a SYSTEM file on the HDD.

So, I tried several things on this IDE Maxtor HDD:

1. Make it slave, and try to copy that missing file back to the HDD. No success since Windows won't detect that HDD as ready/online and tries to format it to use it.

2. Try the disk with IDE-to-USB cable to another machine, and same scenario: Windows tries to initialize/format the disk to use it.

3. Try to boot from a boot disk (Bart PE) and it cannot connect to the disk. Error message comes back with CRC (cyclic redundancy check).

4. Try to fix it with Windows tool: CHKDSK, and tool cannot find the disk.

I need to recover some files from the disk, any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
neualex
