It allows me 3 tries then I have to abort. the next thing that appears is harddrive 0 not found. what would cause this?

Are you using a premium version of Vista? Drive encryption could cause this. I've never seen what happens when you enable drive encryption but that would be my best bet.
If you are using vista, look into drive encryption. If you're not specify your operating system and we'll work from there.
Also, how long has this been happening, and how long have you had the computer?
