Hello,

I seem to be having a common problem yet from what I've read in some of these threads the fix is different for everyone. My home PC will not open some web sites, the browser sits there connecting to whatever web site I'm trying to access and does nothing. Most of the problem sites require logins and passwords, but the initial pages are not https, for example, I can log on to this web site but it will not let me post, my PC sits in limbo. I have email accounts thru Earthlink but can't even get to earthlink.net much less log in, can't log on to myspace or my on line banking. I can access my coporate email from home but can not send email from my home pc any more. I can not even access microsoft.com.

I have tried the following to no avail; Several browsers including IE7, Firefox, Netscape, changing my MTU, running the dll files, clearing history, deleting cookies, running Spybot, Lavasoft, AVG, dropping my firewall, checking security settings, making sure internet security is default, checked encryption, checked ports, etc.. HEELLLP!

I have attached the HJT log, do you see anything out of the ordinary? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Daniweb forums :).

Please update hijackthis to version 2.0.2 and then paste the results of it's scan into your post rather than attaching it.

Download Dial-a-Fix and run it. Select the 'Check all' (green arrow) and then hit 'GO.'
Reboot when done and see how things are now.

Download the HostsXpert.
Run it and press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.
Note that if you have a custom host file, this will remove it. You can edit the host file with this program too.

Thanks for the reply Crunchie.

I will have to save the HJT log to disc and bring it in to work tomorrow so I can and paste - I didn't think to do that. I can read the forums from home but can not add a post or reply from there, which is why I attached a copy of it.

Is it safe to use Dial-a-fix and HostsXpert without first pasting the log?

Is it safe to use Dial-a-fix and HostsXpert without first pasting the log?

Yes :)

My PC would not allow me to dowload the Dial-a-fix, so I will download it to disk and bring it home.

Here is my HJT 2.0 Log

The restricted list is clear and speed is not a problem, but thankyou none the less!

My money is on a javascript problem [form submission] and it's either with you or your ISP.
Talk to em.

ISP checks out ok - worked fine at sign up and for a long time after. I can't get to java.com to see if there's any updates or fixes - any ideas on how to check java without going to their website? Can't access micrsoft downloads either.

No, not java, but javascript.. :). There is a difference. [And if you have java check in contol panel andd update from there...
This is a broad brush we shall apply now, but somewhere in this the problem should be resolved....
Go to Start > Run and then cutnpaste and Enter the following 2 lines [you need to press OK after each DLL file is re-registered].
---- LINE 1
regsvr32 urlmon.dll mshtml.dll shdocvw.dll browseui.dll jscript.dll vbscript.dll scrrun.dll msxml.dll actxprxy.dll softpub.dll wintrust.dll dssenh.dll

---- LINE 2
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll gpkcsp.dll sccbase.dll slbcsp.dll cryptdlg.dll oleaut32.dll ole32.dll shell32.dll msjava.dll hlink.dll Schannel.dll Rsabase.dll initpki.dll

Do not worry if some of these do not run or are not found. It simply means that particular dll does not apply to your version or system configuration.

I'll give it a go this evening. Thank you.

I ran the javascript dll files and still have the same problem, a couple of them did not load, but as you said it should be o.k.

I also checked my advanced tab in internet options and I do not have java.

..

Oh, it looks like a post I "made" didn't make it to the board...
Anyway, I'm running out off ideas, jstorm. Try uninstalling your google toolbar, fix any remaining google entries in a new hijackthis scan; then under internet options check under Manage Add-ons for any entries you do not know, remove them... unfortunately, that would only affect IE and not FF or Netscape... ok, I know little of netscape's browser...

Thanks Gerbil, I'll give that a shot. I don't know if this lends insight as to what's going on with my computer, but I downloaded and ran CC Cleaner. As a result I can post in this forum from my problematic home PC. All previous posts have been made from work.

Forgot to mention that I still can't access the sights I'm having problems with.

Tricky. Just in case... try to run this after another clean with CCleaner:
==Please use IE to do an online scan at panda:- http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan?
-select a link to the scan... free online virus scan...., enter a valid? email and follow through, choosing My Computer for a full system scan.
Post the log it produces here.
-this would eliminate one area of thought, at the least.
Something else you should consider, because of the great number of common usage between browsers of many dlls is to run System File Checker...
Go Start, run, sfc /scannow
Insert your XP SP2 cd...

O.k. here is the log;

Incident Status Location

Spyware:Cookie/Doubleclick

:) ... your sys is clean...
Well, I am out of ideas on your problem. Sorry, but I really do not know what to try next... Are ALL your browsers having the same problem re opening sites? If one site will not open in IE, say, will that same site open in any other browser?

The sites that I can't open will not open no matter which browser I use.

I reallt appreciate the help regardless of the outcome.

Mmmm. I assume that you have done these things also:
In control panel select the Network and Internet Connections , rclick on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and lclick on properties. Click the Networking tab. Dclick on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select Obtain DNS servers automatically. Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.

Flush the DNS cache: Go Start > Run, type cmd and click OK.
In the cmd screen type in ipconfig /flushdns and Enter. Close the window.

Done all of that, still nothing. The computer shop had my PC for a week and turned up nothing. Tehy were able to access sites I can't from home. My ISP says there is nothing wrong, so I'm thinking it's some sort of setting somewhere, but I don't know...

Get a mate to bring his lappy over and hook up. Are you behind a router?
