IE doesn't launch

Hi,
When I try to launch Internet Explorer, the hourglass cursor displays
for a couple seconds, then reverts to the regular cursor. IE does not
start and does not appear in the process list. My laptop is running XP.
I suspect, (after reading many other posts) that the culprit is spyware.
I have run hijackthis and will post the log below. Thank-you for any
advice and recommendations you may be able to provide.

Um, ah, yeah- you could say that... :mrgreen:

You have several infections, and HijackThis alone isn't going to fix them. Let's clean out some of nasties first, then you can post a fresh log and we'll see what's left:

1. Your log shows no anti-virus software running. You should install a good anti-virus/Internet security software package such as those offered by Norton Utilities/Symantec or McAfee. After installing one of these programs and downloading the latest virus definition updates for it, run a full system scan and have the program fix/remove what it finds.

If you don't have/can't buy one of the above programs, go to these two sites to get free online scans:

2. Reboot into Safe Mode (do this by hitting the F8 key as the computer is booting) and:

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete everything inside the following folders (don't delete the folders themselves though):

1. Local Settings\Temp
2. Cookies
3. History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

(If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed.)

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

- Reboot normally.

3. Download and Run Ad Aware and SpyBot Search & Destroy (download links are in my sig below). Follow these directions for configuring Ad Aware (directions courtesy of our member "crunchie"):

1. Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan

2.Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
*Automatically save log-file
*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
*Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Under Definitions:
*Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days

2) Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :

Under Driver, Folders & Files:
*Scan Within Archives

Under Select drives & folders to scan -
*choose all hard drives

Under Memory & Registry: all green
*Scan Active Processes
*Scan Registry
*Deep Scan Registry
*Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
*Scan my Hosts file

3) Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:

Under Shell Integration:
*Move deleted files to recycle bin

Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
*include addtional object information
*DESELECT - include negligible objects information
*include environment information

Under Alternate Data Streams:
*Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
*Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT

4) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Under the Log Files:
*Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Please do not check or make green: Include Module list in logfile

5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

6. Click ‘Start’

*Choose:'Perform Full System Scan'
*DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.

7. Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.

8. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window

9. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’

10. REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found

- SpyBot:
When you first run SpyBot, it will walk you through a Wizard which will perform a few critical functions (making a registry backup, getting the latest updates, etc.).

1. Perform all of the Wizard's tasks.
2. Run the program. Once it completes, have it fix everything it finds.
3. Reboot.

Run HijackThis again and post a fresh log.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I followed your directions, and am posting a new
hijackthis log. A couple things - I do have an anti-virus program loaded
and running. It is Norton Anti-Virus and I have Real-time protection enabled.
I'm not sure why that didn't present in the hijack log. Also, I have been
trying (unsuccessfully) to uninstall Weatherbug. Any suggestions on how
to get that off my system would be appreciated. Lastly, I've been trying
to change the permissions on Temporary Internet Files and Local Settings,
but they keep reverting to Read-only. This is keeping me from deleting
the Content.IE5 directory contents. Any tips on how to get around this?

I do have an anti-virus program loaded
and running. It is Norton Anti-Virus and I have Real-time protection enabled.
I'm not sure why that didn't present in the hijack log.

Sorry, that was my mistake- I missed the "NavNT" entries in your log; those are the Norton components.

....they keep reverting to Read-only. This is keeping me from deleting the Content.IE5 directory contents.

It may sound odd, but the read-only attribute won't stop you from deleting the contents of the folders I mentioned. Make sure that you're trying the directions I gave while logged in under the Administrator account or an account with administrator permissions.

-> While still in safe mode,, you should also delete the AWS, WildTangent, and CLockSync folders under C:\Program Files.

I don't have time to go through your entire log right now. I'll try to get back to it later today if no one else helps out first.

Download CWShredder from here & run it. Select the fix button & it will fix everything related to CoolWebSearch that is stored in it's database. Close ALL windows, including Internet Explorer, before running CWShredder. Reboot.

To help prevent this from happening again, install the patches for the vulnerabilities that this hijacker exploits by going here for your critical updates.

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows, and hit the "Fix checked" button.

Run the PurityScan uninstaller.

Now, let's open a command prompt by going to the start menu and then select 'Run'.

In the box that pops up type in 'cmd'. The command prompt will open.

OR

You can go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt. Unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u vhpifbg.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save typing them in.

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

I've been using Netscape since IE stopped working last fall. Are Firefox
and Opera better than Netscape? Also, this machine has problems
downloading - it hangs. To get the updated version of hijackthis.exe
and PurityScan uninstaller, I had to download them from another machine
and e-mail them to this one.

Is the firewall that Microsoft provides with SP2 sufficient?

One more piece of information: Norton Anti-Virus is
installed and Real-time protection is enabled. This week-end, an
alert was displayed, saying that the Sasser Worm had been detected
and quarantined. Not sure if this is contributing to the problems with
IE and downloading.

1. Spyware and/or viruses may have damaged IE beyond the point where just removing the infections will fix things. You should try to get IE working again though, because you can't use the Windows Update feature with any other browser:

A. Try the free IEFix utility.

B. Reinstall or repair IE.

2. There are some security-related reasons why Netscape, Opera, Firefox, etc. are all more immune to many of the well-known exploits that can be used to compromise IE. Oncew you get beyond that though, the question of which browser is "better" is really a matter of personal preference.

3. The Sasser worm:

You should make sure Norton has the most current updates installed and run a full system scan to see if Norton picks up more pieces of the worm. Have it repair whatever infections it finds.

You might also want to run a couple of these free online anti-virus scans as well:

4. Microsoft's firewall: Not as good as other firewall programs (especially when it come to blocking outgoing connection attempts) but better than nothing.

mattisjo. You can also try this if IEFIX does not work;

1) find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
2) Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
3) Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.
