The two main sites I have no access to are: www.us.army.mil and www.gmail.com (both used for email). Many other sites will allow access to the initial page but won't connect after submitting login info. Could the problem be something to do with the submit buttons on pages that require login?

Is this problem just with IE or with your other browser as well (Netscape/Mozilla)?

It is a problem for all browsers. I primarily use Mozilla but the problem exists with all three.

For both Netscape and Mozilla, the error (alert) message reads: "The connection ws refused when attempting to contact www.com"

For IE it shows the Cannot Find Server - This page cannot be displayed.

I think this problem started after following the steps for the fixme.reg file given by crunchie a while back. If that helps at all.

Thanks

crunchie plz help dude i have the same thing as the other guy but i tried your thing and when i get to trend micro and go scan now its free it says internet exp has encountered a problem and closes....HELP

Hi Capp,

First of all- welcome to TechTalk!

We ask that members not tag their questions on to a thread previously started by another member (regardless of how similar your problem might seem). Not only does it divert the focus of the thread away from the original poster's problem, but it also makes it less likely that you yourself will get the individual attention that you need.

Please start your own thread in this forum and post your question there. When you do, post a log from HijackThis and give us any other specific information that might be helpful.

For a full description of our posting guidelines and general rules of conduct, please see this page:

Ok nvm that Ill start a new thread.

Ok nvm that Ill start a new thread.

Thanks i3lackrabbit.

It really does make it easier for all of us if we keep members questions/problems in their own discrete threads.

Just wanted to check in and see if there were any suggestions as to how to fix this problem. I think progress got cut off when the other two posted on this thread. Thanks.

Apparently it did; thanks for getting us back on track :)

Download, install, update, and run these tools:

HSRemove -- http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4286.html
about:Buster -- http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4289.html

Go to Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel and remove (if found):

Home Search Assistant
InstaFinder
qmok

(or something similar, if you're not sure, ask us first)

Get the Pocket Killbox from here:
http://bleepingcomputer.com/files/spyware/KillBox.zip

Unzip the file to your desktop.

Go offline until this is completed (you may wish to print these instructions).

Scan with HJT and have it fix the following entries:

Remember to close any open windows, other then hijackthis, before hitting Fix checked.

Boot into Safe Mode, do a search for these files, and delete any instances found:

param32.dll
guninst.exe
popup_bl.dll
systr.dll
svrhost.exe
addat.exe
prvdi.exe
crox32.exe
iesquoui.exe
wp.exe
d3em32.exe
spoolsrv32.exe
qmokm.exe

If any could not be deleted, (most likely param32.dll), run Pocket Killbox and paste the full file path of file in the box and click on Delete on Reboot. Click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle; you will get a message saying File will be deleted on next reboot, Process and Reboot now?, Click Yes to reboot to normal mode. (Note: the 'file path' will be something like C:\WINDOWS\System32\param32.dll)

Delete any icons on your desktop that were not put there by you, and then empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot normally, close any open browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log.

I went through your steps from the last posting and I found none of the items to fix with HJT and my comp had none of the files to delete. Everything seems to in working order with the exception of the "unable to connect" messages. Could it be something to do with reg settings or internet setup?

Thanks again for all the help, it is really appreciated.

You do have your system set to show Hidden files and folders, don't you?

Scan with HJT and have it fix this entry:
O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipba.exe (file missing)

Then go to C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete ipba.exe

Try a 'release & renew' --

Go to Start, Run, type in cmd, click OK.

When the new window comes up, type in ipconfig /release

Wait a moment for it to do that, then type in ipconfig /renew

This may take a few moments; when it's done, type in ipconfig /all and post the results here.

You can also try IEFix from here (though I doubt it's the problem since your other browser doesn't work either):
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4467.html

And Winsockfix from here:
http://www.digitalminds.net/index.pl/downloads

dlh, the ipba.exe file wasn't there to delete (missing right?). i did the rest and here is what i got:

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name: 00D059CA2F11
Primary Dns Suffix:
Node Type: Hybird
IP Routing Enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No

Ethernet adatper Wireless Network Connections:

Connection-specific DNs Suffix:

Dhcp Enabled: Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled: Yes
IP Address: 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Defualt Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server: 192.168.1.1

OK- your general IP configuration looks good, although since you're only having trouble accessing some sites, that would pretty much be expected.

Did you have a chance to try the Winsockfix program dlh6213 linked to yet? If not, please do that and let us know if it made any difference.

I tried the Winsockfix program and received this message:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

Try using WinsockXPFix instead of WinsockFix; it probably won't give you that error.

DMR, your link to WinsockXPfix didn't work, but I tracked it down on another site. I ran it (the error did not occur) and it completed. After the reboot, still no dice.

Thanks for sticking with it.

Sorry- the URL I pasted into the link had an extra character in it for some reason; fixed now.

1. See if you can reach the problematic sites by entering their IP address into your browser instead of their URL.

www.gmail.com's IP is 216.239.57.107

www.us.army.mil's IP is 143.69.243.36

2. Try clearing your DNS cache:

Open a DOS window, type the following command at the prompt, and hit Enter:

ipconfig /flushdns

DMR,

I tried going straight to the IPs and still it did not work. Interesting thing though, for the past wo weeks I was connected through another network and I had access to all sites. I guess that means that the problem is not with my computer but with my network? I'm not too sure how all that works but if the info helps at all I'm willing to try. Is there any way to check the settings of my LAN or the router or something?

Thanks

If you were able to reach the sites while connected to another network, then yes, that would point more to a problem somewhere in your (usual) network rather than a problem on your computer itself.

Please give us as much of a detailed description of your entire network setup as possible. We can definitely help you check/troubleshoot the entire network, but having as much information as possible up front will obviously let us do that most quickly.

Afterthought:

When you tried entering the IP addresses I gave you in your browser, did you prefix them with "http://"? For example:

http://216.239.57.107

I wasn't as specific on that as I should have been.

thanks for your help

Hi kwibster and jojosoks.

First of all- welcome to Daniweb :).

We ask that members not piggy-back questions on to a thread previously started by another member here in the Viruses, Spyware & other Nasties forum, (regardless of how similar your problem might seem). Not only does it divert the focus of the thread away from the original poster's problem, but it also makes it less likely that you yourself will get the individual attention that you need.

Please start your own thread and post your question there. When you do, please try to give us as much specific info as possible regarding the problem (exact error messages, system specs, etc.).

For a full description of our posting guidelines and general rules of conduct, please see this page:

Thanks for understanding.
