This was a textbook browser‑hijack/adware cleanup. ’s Pocket KillBox approach removed the locked components, ’s follow‑up HijackThis log shows the infection no longer active, and correctly confirmed the system looks clean. A few targeted verification and hardening steps will close the usual gaps left after this kind of removal.

  • Verify with up‑to‑date scanners: run at least one full on‑demand scan (prefer Safe Mode if possible) and keep the scan logs for comparison. Running a second engine as a “second opinion” is recommended.
  • Browser cleanup: reset the homepage and search provider from Internet Options, clear Temporary Internet Files, inspect the Downloaded Program Files folder and the browser’s add‑ons/BHO list and remove anything unfamiliar.
  • Startup/registry checks: export a registry backup, then inspect Run/RunServices keys and the startup folders for leftover push/update clients or dialers; only remove entries when their purpose is certain.
  • Locked files and services: use a file‑deletion utility that can terminate the owning process or schedule deletion on reboot rather than forcing system files; re‑run HijackThis afterward and save the new log.
  • Resident protection: re‑enable any resident guards that were turned off for removal, update all definitions, and schedule routine scans.

Note of caution: editing the registry or deleting system files can destabilize the machine — always back up first. Because Windows 98 is long out of support, consider moving to a supported OS when practical; unsupported systems are far more vulnerable to reinfection. If the popups return, capture a fresh HijackThis log plus a list of running processes and use an offline rescue scanner or a clean reinstall for persistent, stealthy infections.

Download the Pocket KillBox
Unzip the file to your desktop.

Go offline until you have completed all the below.

Run Pocket Killbox and paste the full file path of each of the below files in the box and click on Standard File Kill and End Explorer Shell While Killing File. Click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle after you enter each file (see the files below).

C:\WINDOWS\System32\param32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\guninst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\popup_bl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svrhost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\systr.dll

Reboot afterwards if the files are successfully deleted.

If all files are not deleted, do not reboot yet. Run Pocket Killbox again and paste the full file path in the box and click on Delete on Reboot. Next click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle. You will get a message saying "File will be deleted on next reboot, Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" to reboot only after the last file you enter.

We'll need to unload Spybot's Teatimer before we begin. To do this can you start Spybot and go to Tools > Resident and uncheck the box next to Tea-Timer. Make sure that the icon in the system tray is no longer there. If it is, just right click on it and select "Exit". Do not forget to re-enable it when we are done :).

=================

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows and hit the "Fix checked" button.
