Hi there, I just joined daniweb cos I've been having problems with an aurora popup and you guys seem to do a great of helping out CLEARLY!!!
I know you must be bored with aurora popups but my mum's managed to get one stuck in her pc and i really don't know enough to remove it myself. I did a plain old Windows search for 'aurora', found one .exe file (sorry i can't remember the name) and deleted it. Predictably, this didn't solve the problem :( .
I think the first thing you need is a HijackThis log from the computer - where can I get hijackthis?
Thank you very much for your help (and time!!) - best wishes.

Download HijackThis selfextracting zip version from here. Once downloaded, double click on the file & it will install into it's own, permanent folder.
Start HJT & press the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. When the scan is finished a window will pop up giving you the option of where to save it. Save it to desktop where it is easy to access. Open the log file and copy the entire contents of the file & paste it into the body of your post. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET. Most of what is there is necessary for the running of your system.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.php?download=20050515010747824
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Hi, thanks for your help. Here's the preliminary HJT log:

Just wanted to check, before I install ewido - there's Kaspersky anti-virus personal running on this computer. Is it still OK to install and run ewido?

Thanks again,
Rickserton

Yes, it's ok to run Ewido :). Do that and post back a new log please.

Right, i've already got trouble....
I went into safe mode, ran nailfix.cmd. i then went to run ewido - it said the databases weren't updated. So i went back into normal mode to update the databases - this worked OK.
When the desktop appears, be it in normal or safe mode, a message comes up saying "cannot find C:\Windows\nail.exe" . At first I had unzipped nailfix to program files but then realised you wanted it on the desktop so deleted it and unzipped once again, but to desktop - does that explain the glitch?
Now, back into safe mode. I ran ewido twice - each time it just stops at about 2.5% progress, and closes. I think just before it closes that it says "infected file found", but it immediately shuts down without my doing anything.
Finally, whenever i shut down windows from safe mode, it gets stuck on "closing network connections" so I have to press the button and restart it.
I ran a new HJT just in case it can help:

I believe you should have copied the report from ewido to clipboard :). Not to worry.

Reboot.

===============

To help protect your system from hostile ActiveX content, or special 'downloadable' files:

Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:

1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed.
2) Next, "Enable all protection".
3) Exit the program.

-

Note: Remember to regularly check for updates.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Let me know how everything goes.

Hello again!
First things first, I haven't had an aurora window pop up for a little while but i won't count my chicks before they hatch.....
Fixed the files you told me to. Found no c:\windows\nail.exe (nearest thing is a NAIL.EXE-........ with more stuff in the name, in windows\prefetch - i didn't touch it).
Downloaded/installed/updated spyware.
Ran HJT, here's the log:

Do you think that solves all my problems?
Best wishes,

Your log is looking good :). I would now clear the prefetch folder of all reference to nail.exe.

Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

This one too if Win2K or XP.
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Thanks Crunchie! Still no popups either.... I can now remove ewido?
Thank you very very much!
Rickserton :p

You are welcome :). You can keep or remove ewido. It will still update and remove nasties after the trial period is up, you just lose the real time scanner and automatic update features.
