I am having trouble with the cannot display page message in IE6. I am running XP. My dsl connection is wide open, other computers in office are not having problems. The problem gets worse as the day wears on. Sometimes releasing and renewing ipconfig temporarily fixes the problem. Often, web pages will load haf-way and then the error message show up. Sometimes the error message shows up when starting to load. The problem is generally universal for all sites when it hits. This includes yahoo.

I have deleted temp internet files, run various spyware programs, etc. Nothing seems to fix the problem.

There's a little bit of cruft in your HJT log, but nothing which looks like it would be the root of your problem. That, and the additional fact that a DHCP release/renew sometimes fixes the problem, makes it sound like this could be more of a general network connectivity issue than a virus/spyware-specific problem.

Have HijackThis fix these, and then delete the entire C:\Program Files\WebSavingsfromEbates folder if it exists:

Here are a few things to try/check (if you are running any firewall software, disable it entirely before doing any of the following. Firewall programs quite often get "confused" or corrupted, causing problems such as yours):

1. Download and run the free IEFix utility.

2. When the problem occurs, see if you can reach sites by their actual IP addresses instead of their URL. For example, if you find that you can't reach http://www.google.com, put the following in your browser's location/address box instead and see if the Google home page comes up:

3. When you can't reach a site through your browser, see if you can at least "ping" the site. Again using Google as an example:

- Under your Start menu, go to Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt.

- In the DOS window that opens, type the following command at the prompt and then hit Enter:

ping www.google.com

If that works, you should get 4 positive replys followed by some summary info. If it doesn't work, try to ping by IP address:


4. Obviously- check your physical connections:

- Replace your current network cable with another cable that is known to be in good working order.

- Plug your network cable into another port on your router. Although not as common a cause of intermittent connectivity problems as other things, ports on routers, switches, etc. do go bad sometimes.

There are other things we can try if none of the above helps, but try what I've suggested first and let us know the results.
