Ok... here's the deal...
I have Windows xp and have recently installed ServicePack 2. I also have Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp.sp2.rtm. I have been doing much research about my "The page cannot be displayed" problem and I believe the problem is caused by a Registry key that I might have deleted during a adware check (Lavasoft Ad-ware SE Personal). I can no longer open Yahoo profiles among other pages. I often get the "the page canot be displayed" error while trying to open various pages. At first, I thought Yahoo Messenger to be the problem. So I removed it from my computer and reinstalled. Nothing. I then installed Netscape 7.2 but this hasn't solved the problem either. I have done a virus check. Nothing. I have done a HijackThis scan but am afraid to fix all the files and so, I'm sending it to you for your input. If anyone can help me, I'd be much obliged because I think I am close to a nervous breakdown!!!

First of all we have to remove Newdotnet, either from add/remove programs, or by going here and scrolling down to the uninstall tool.

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows, and hit the "Fix checked" button.

Reboot and post another log.

Thanks crunchie. So, I found only a dll file of Newdotnet and no uninstall. There is one step on their web site that I can do but from another computer to download their uninstall file and then apply it to my system. I was unable to delete the file but managed to rename it to old for whatever that is worth. Here is my new HijackThis Scan log:
I tried opening profiles just in case, but they still don't work...

Only posted half a log :). Try this before we do anything more.

Download & instal Spybot S&D 1.3 from here. Update it before scanning.
After the scan is complete, have spybot fix everything marked RED.
On the page that first opens when you start Spybot there is an option to immunise, you should do this. In the immunise section there is also a link to download Spywareblaster. This program will prevent the install of bad activex controls that it has knowledge of. Download that & you can keep it updated by selecting the same link that you use to download it. Reboot

I've downloaded what you recommended and did all the adjustments. I immunized my system also. However, now, I can't open MSN Messenger nor www.hotmail.com nor can I access Yahoo profiles. When I reload my computer, it tells me it cannot find the newdotnet6_38.dll file. At first, I renamed it to old but then, couldn't get into MSN Messenger. Then I renamed it again and was able to enter, now, after doing all the spybot stuff, I can no longer access and still get the error message after reboot. Here is my new log:

Somewhere along the way Newdotnet has been partially removed. The correct way to remove it is the way I indicated earlier. Any other way and you can lose the internet connection.
As you can see in your log, line 010 indicates that Newdotnet has hijacked your connection. The only effective way I know to fix it is *as above.* Hijackthis will not fix those lines in the log. Spybot normally will fix them. Because they have somehow become corrupted, Spybot has been unable to clean up :(.
You can try the following, with no guarantees.

Download LSPfix from here
Do the following if you lose your internet connection after *fixing* with hijackthis.

On the opening screen of LSPfix, click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox. Then click Finish. That will restore the connection.

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows, and hit the "Fix checked" button.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [New.net Startup] rundll32 D:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~2.DLL,NewDotNetStartup -s

Reboot into safe mode and delete the D:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1 folder.

Reboot normally after doing the above, rescan with hijackthis, then post that log here please.

Hi Crunchie... Thanks a bunch for your help. Well, I followed your indications and was able to remove (I hope) completely Newdot. However, both MSN and Yahoo Messengers are opening fine but still get the "the page cannot be displayed" error while trying to view profiles. Then I tried another link that I've been trying to access for a while and got the error there also (http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/5472/mainpage.html). Here is my new log:

Try bypassing the proxy you have running and see if you can access them. You can also try putting them in the trusted zone.

I'm sorry to say that I am not too sure what you mean by bypassing proxy... do you mean that I should install a program or just type in the ftp file myself? Thanks again!

Your log shows that you are using a proxy.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=localhost:1030

Running from localhost (your PC) from port 1030. Looking at it again, I think the http is out of place.
It may be best to fix it with hijackthis and go from there.

Hi Crunchie! I went back to check Internet options Connections after fixing the below mentioned file from Hijack. I no longer have a proxy connection... Still get the "page cannot be displayed" error message but get the strong feeling we are making progress. At least my pc is clean now thanks to your help. Keep me posted and thanks again!

Do you have anything disabled in msconfig? Go to Start\run and type in msconfig, hit ok and go to the startup Tab. Make sure all entries are checked for startup. If any were found to be disabled, reboot after re-enabling them and post another log please.
