Hello everyone -- I'm new to this, so I hope it's OK that I'm posting this here. I've got the dreaded "Shopping Wizard" stuck on my computer, and when I open Internet Explorer the homepage always goes to "About:Blank." :(

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has experienced this. I've run AdAware and Microsoft Anti-spyware to no avail. I just downloaded Hijack This, and here's the log. Any ideas on what to do?? Thanks in advance.

Roper, hi and welcome to Daniweb :).

Download CWShredder 2.15 from here. Run it and press the *fix,* not scan and allow it to clean the infection. Close all browser and explorer windows before hitting the fix button.

===============

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

===============

Download AboutBuster 5:

http://www.besttechie.net/tools/AboutBuster5.zip
http://www.malwarebytes.biz/AboutBuster5.zip

Once downloaded, unzip it, and put the folder on your desktop. Then double-click on the AboutBuster icon to start the program.

Click Update. This will start updating AboutBuster with the latest definition database.

Once it's done updating and you see that dialog, click Ok.

Close AboutBuster.

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here.

Start AboutBuster and click Begin Removal.

When the scan is done, click Ok.

Run Ewido, and do a full scan. During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK.

Save the logfile from the scan. Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Thanks for your help -- I followed your instructions. All worked fine, but I did get "error while updating" messages while updating AboutBuster, so it's possible it didn't get the most recent definitions. After doing all the steps, the "About:blank" page still appears when I open my browser, and pop-up ads come up. Here are the new logs:

Try this.

===============

Now, let's open a command prompt by going to the start menu and then select 'Run'.

In the box that pops up type in 'cmd'. The command prompt will open.

OR

You can go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt. Unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u ipkg32.dll
regsvr32 /u d3hb32.dll
regsvr32 /u mfcgi.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save typing them in.

===============

Next, Open a command prompt by:

1. Clicking "Start", then "Run...".
2. Enter "cmd" (without the quotes).
3. Enter "services.msc" (without the quotes).

-

Now, locate and 'stop' the following services, if present:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) owner ... (C:\WINDOWS\msab.exe)

Look carefully, since the name of the service (above) can be anywhere in the entry; also be careful not to 'stop' any required system services. Once stopped, set this service to disabled.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
2. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\msab.exe
C:\WINDOWS\atlbg32.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Still in HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINDOWS\msab.exe
C:\WINDOWS\atlbg32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jywmx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\ipkg32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\d3hb32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcgi.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\netyu.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\appap.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wintp.exe

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

==

Run about:buster again after trying to update it.

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

Thanks so much for your help, Crunchie. Alas, looks like it's still not licked. About:blank and pop-ups still appear. The log is below. I actually went through the steps you prescribed twice. It looks like the "R1" files have a way of renaming themselves. You said to delete the ones with "jywmx.dll" but when I ran the scan the first time, those weren't there; instead they had a different combination of letters. I ignored them. And then after rebooting and running Hijack this again, I noticed they'd changed to yet another combination. Feeling cocky, I tried fixing/deleting those, then ran about buster and rebooted. Still no luck. All the nasties showed up again, including the R1s with new letter combos.

Is the fact that I have a wireless connection perhaps part of the problem? At this point I'm thinking I may be better off just wiping my system, though of course I'd rather not....

thanks again!

OK -- this is very weird. A few hours after posting that last post, I ran Ewido and About Buster again, and now by some miracle, the About:blank page doesn't seem to be popping up when I start Internet Explorer. Is this possible??!!! I haven't tried rebooting yet, but we'll see what happens when I do that....

OK. After rebooting post a new log please.

Everything still appears to be working properly -- here's the log. Thanks again.
