I have been getting the "page cannot be displayed" massages for most sites. I am having a hard time accessing sites such as yahoo, hotmail, ebay, etc. For example, I can only access yahoo after I refresh the page 100 times, well, a little less than that. But the page still does not show up properly. No access to hotmail at all. No access to my eBay, etc etc.

Please help, really appreciate

— intermittent "page cannot be displayed" errors that only clear after lots of refreshes usually point to DNS resolution or something in the local PC (browser add‑ins, proxy, or a corrupted network stack), not just a flaky ISP. You already ran scans and winsock fixes, which were reasonable first steps, but those fixes can sometimes leave the adapter or settings in an odd state. Below is a focused, practical checklist to isolate and fix the problem.

  1. Quick isolation — rule out the network or the PC
  • Power‑cycle modem/router and test the same sites from another machine on the same network. If the other machine works, the problem is the PC.
  1. Basic network diagnostics (open a Command Prompt as Administrator and run these):
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /all
nslookup yahoo.com
ping 8.8.8.8
tracert yahoo.com

Use nslookup to see whether names are resolving; ping 8.8.8.8 checks raw IP connectivity (bypasses DNS). Paste the outputs if you ask for more help.
3) Browser and IE checks

  • Start IE with no add‑ons (iexplore.exe -extoff) or try a different browser.
  • In IE: Tools → Internet Options → Connections → LAN Settings — ensure no unexpected proxy is set.
  • Remove unwanted toolbars/add‑ons via Add/Remove Programs or Manage Add‑ons. A broken BHO can hang page loads.
  1. Hosts file and DNS server
  • Inspect C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts for suspicious entries (back it up before editing).
  • If DNS looks flaky, try a public DNS (for testing only) such as 8.8.8.8.
  1. If you have "limited or no connectivity" after winsock fixes
  • In Device Manager uninstall the network adapter and reboot so Windows redetects it, or reinstall the vendor driver (Dell driver CD or download).
  1. Malware and final checks
  • Run a full, updated AV/anti‑malware scan in Safe Mode with Networking. Do not use HijackThis "Fix Checked" without guidance — post a fresh log instead.

If these steps don’t fix it, post back with: (a) a fresh HijackThis log, (b) the ipconfig /all output and an nslookup result, and (c) whether other devices on the network are affected. That information will let volunteers zero in on DNS vs. local PC causes.

I still have the same symptoms, it's difficult to access sites. I can only access sites after I refresh the page a number of times. But there are still some pages I cannot open, i.e. hotmail, my eBay, yahoo mail.

After going through some readings, I did several things to solve the problem.
I scanned my computer with Spybot and Ad-aware, no luck.

I ran some commands that are suggested in other forums:
1. netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
2. netsh winsock reset catalog
3. netsh winsock reset
I am a computer illiterate so I have no idea at all what these commands do. In the end, all with no luck

I also download and run winsockxpfix, still no luck
It is even worse with winsockxpfix, I lost connection, I got limited or no connection after reboot. I cannot access internet at all. So I did system restore, but I still have the previous problems.

Then I download and run IEFix and still no luck

Please anyone kind enough to help me solve this problem of my life, I would really appreciate it.
