Can't change my desktop theme - get rundll32.exe

Trying to simply change the colour of my desktop is causing a real problem

I select this [via Rightclicking the desktop> properties> desktop> colour] the screen greys out (as normal), like it's thinking of doing something, but then hey presto - nothing happens and i have the same desktop EXCEPT the display properties box is now left on top, blank and hung. Trying to close it give me one of those love "rundll32.exe errors"

ALSO it has developed a habit for crashing immediately my desktop loads - goes blank and you land back at the "enter password" page. This ain't every time, but it's not not right is it??

I have looked at my system configuration utility and unchecked a few things in there i didn't like the look of (like skynetave.exe for a start) or were recent (for i have never had this happen before), but it doesn't help. I have installed and ran Hijackthis and attach a log below..

don't get any idea's that I have a clue what I am talking about here, I have just spend 3 hours scanning your forums and pottering about through various suggestions without success (probably cos i am a numpty!). :rolleyes:

any suggestions about what could be causing this to hang would be gratefully appreciated!

One question before we do anything else: did you re-enable the items you disabled with msconfig before running your HijackThis scan? If not, please re-enable the items and post a new log so that the log will report on those items.

well whatever i re-enabled there, caused the pc to crash just as it got to my desktop! . Here's the new Hijack log... Hope you can find something of use in here!

B) You will need to close/quit all web browser programs and disconnect from the Internet for much of the following, so you should print out these instructions or save them into a text file with Notepad.

- Open Spy Sweeper, click on "Options", and then click on "Update Definitions" under the Program Options tab. Do not run a scan yet; just close the program once the update completes.

- Open ewido. In the main screen, click "Update" and click "Start Update". After the update process completes, exit from Ewido.

- Open MS Antispyware beta. Make sure the "AntiSpyware Autoupdater" feature is enabled, and that it has downloaded the most current antispyware updates. Close the program after you've verified this.

- Open Norton and make sure that it has the most current virus definitions installed. Again- don't scan yet, just close the program once it's updated.

> Run HijackThis, put a check in the box to the left of the following entry, and then click the "Fix checked" button:

- Open CCleaner.
- Go to Options-> Advanced: Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
- Go to Options>CustomFolders>Add Folder>Navigate to these folders (click on bold file once and hit OK) :

- In left pane, scroll down to "Advanced, Custom Folders", put a check in Custom Folders

- Click on Run Cleaner

It may take a while for the program to perform its cleaning, so be patient. Close the program when it has finished.

- Run Norton, MS Antispyware, and ewido; have the programs fix all malicious items they find.

When ewido finds the first malicious object on your system, it will ask you if it should clean it. When it asks this, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections", then choose clean and click OK.
Save the log file that ewido will create after it finishes scanning; you'll be including that log in your next post here.

- Run Spy Sweeper.
* Under the Sweep Options tab, select ALL options under 'What to Sweep'.
* Click the "Sweep" icon and then "Start" to begin scanning.
*When the scan completes, click Next to automatically quarantine all detected items.
*Click the Results icon, select Session Log, and then click Save to File. Save the scan results to your desktop and close Spy Sweeper.

- Open Windows explorer again and look for the C:\WINDOWS\skynetave.exe file. It should have been removed by the utilities you ran, but delete it if it still exists.

> Empty your Recycle Bin, reboot normally, run HijackThis again, and post the new log. Also post the logs that ewido and Spy Sweeper generated.

* You'll probably want to uninstall Spy Sweeper through your Add/Remove Programs control panel, because the program will entirely cease to function after the 14 day trial period expires. Of course, if you want to pay the registration fee for the product, it is a good tool to have...

* I'd keep ewido, CCleaner, and MS Antispyware installed. MS Antispyware provides good "real-time" spyware protection, and ewido can still be used after the trial period expires; it's only the real-time protection and auto-update functions that will stop woking.

Hi there,

thanks for your help on this. I have also used the msconfig to stop any of the "pinnacle systems" software starting up when teh machine starts up - this has now stopped the crashing on startup.

I still cannot change my desktop theme or colour however. I try to change between Windows Classic, back to Windows XP and the darned thing still hangs, stops and i get the rundll32 error again. I know i am virus free, but is there anything else i can try to get this capability back do you think?

Desktop is looking sad and antiquated - poor thing!

Errors from rundll32.exe can be hard to track down, because that program is responsible for loading and managing a number of of different Windows library files (.dll files). In other words, it is often not rundll32.exe itself which is crashing/hanging, but one of the dlls that it is managing.

Please do the following to see if we can find more specific information on the problem:

Open the Event Viewer utility in your Administrative Tools control panel and look through your System and Application logs for entries flagged with "Error" or "Warning" which might be related to the rundll32 crashes. Double-clicking on such an entry will open a properties window with more detailed information on the error; post that info here. To do so:

In the Properties window of a given entry, click on the button with the graphic of two pieces of paper on it; the button is at the right of the window just below the up arrow/down arrow buttons. You won't see anything happen when you click the button, but it will copy all of the details to the Windows clipboard. You can then paste the details into your next post here.

well I can no longer get the rundll32 error to actually happen and lokking back in my history - there's nothing in there!.

I have today however, gotten into a pickle. It's a long story but bear with me. My firewall started warning me the other day of potential intrusions - here's roughly what they say..

DNS Spoof query reponse 192.168.0.1 from an external IP of 212.113.31.46
Scan Sock proxy attempt 216.239.59.99

is there any way i can check out who these IP's are?? I can't remember what the cmd line instruction to actually resolve an ip adress into a hostname - can you advise??

today I have run spybot seek&destroy and nearly had kittens. My partner accidentally left the pc on with a web page open the other night and when i came home, the antivirus softwares on eth machine looked like they were going nuts (many telling me to re-install them). Nah, I actually enjoy the computer forensics aspect of this stuff. (Yes, it's true- I have no life...)

1. The command to find the hostname of a given IP address is "nslookup"; you can also do an online whois loookup.

2. The SpyBot log entries indicate nothing abnormal.

3. Your HJT log is clean.

4. There isn't really much you can do about the incoming ping (ICMP) requests/scans; attackers do that all the time. The report entries are just standardized firewall alerts notifying you of the scan; as long as your firewall is dealing with things correctly there's nothing to worry about.

5. As for the outbound P2P Fastrack GET request to Google: do you have (or have you had) a filesharing program such as Kazaa installed?

I have having so much "fun" at the moment with weird stuff happening though, including my netgear pro firewall playing silly b*ggers, i am becoming more than a touch paranoid. This evening, a great deal of my PC's memory seems to be chunnering away with the winlogon.exe (?) some sites say this is a trojan, but I am in no real position to say one way or another.
