Hey everyone, this is my first post. I have had a problem on my WIN XP PRO machine in which the desktop is now white and when I right-click on the desktop I am able to click on Properties > Desktop, but then I cannot choose a desktop picture because all of the options under "Background" are "greyed-out" and not able to be chosen, though you can see them as a choice. Also "browse" and "position" are greyed-out too. When the computer boots I can see the original desktop photo for a split-second then it turns white. I don't believe it's SpySherrif virus (yes I've done my research on here!). I don't believe it's SpySherrif because everything listed under those threads were not found on my machine (i.e. winstall.exe, ibm000*.*?, etc.) I even downloaded hijackthis and the following is the result of the scan. Can anyone help me get back my desktop? Sorry the log is so lengthy. Email me directly at christopher.land@verizon.net Thanks!

Before Doing anything w/ HJT i would like you to download Ewido Security Suite from here.

  1. Install ewido anti-malware
  2. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  3. Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  4. The program will now open to the main screen.
  5. When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  6. You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful" )

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:

  • Open up Ewido
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
  • Close ewido anti-malware.

Reboot.

After reboot post the ewido log along with a new HJT log

Hey thanks! I read up on SpySherrif and it appears I actually did have it installed at one time because Spybot S&D listed it somewhere (I don't remember what it said about it but it did have it listed), and so I did the registry fixes mentioned in other threads and it worked! I really appreciate all the effort you made to help me and if you have a paypal account would be willing to donate $5.00 to you for your efforts!
