This problem usually means only WinINet/HTTP traffic (what Internet Explorer uses) is being intercepted or broken while socket-based programs (MSN/IM clients) still work. Causes that match the thread are: a proxy or HTTP‑filter installed by a security suite or toolbar, a corrupted Winsock/LSP stack, or a browser add‑on/BHO interfering with WinINet. ’s log shows multiple security/toolbar components; and had the same symptom and found anti‑virus/anti‑hacker components were the culprit.

Quick isolation (do these in order):

  1. Launch IE with add‑ons disabled: run iexplore -extoff. If IE works, a BHO/toolbar is to blame.
  2. Check Tools → Internet Options → Connections → LAN Settings and clear any proxy unless you knowingly use one.
  3. Verify basic network reachability from the command prompt: flush DNS and ping a public IP.

Commands that help reset the stack (run from an elevated command prompt, then reboot):

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ping 8.8.8.8

Practical fixes that have worked in this thread and elsewhere: disable or temporarily uninstall the “web protection” or HTTP‑filter portion of security suites (Panda, Kaspersky, Norton and older suites are common offenders), remove suspicious toolbars/BHOs, and repair the Winsock stack with the netsh commands above. If IE still fails, check the HOSTS file (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts) for redirected entries, try Safe Mode with Networking, or create a new Windows user profile to rule out profile corruption.

Cautions and final notes: don’t permanently disable antivirus — test with it off briefly then reinstall or update it if it proves to be the blocker. Vendor removal utilities (for old/inactive suites) or Microsoft/major‑vendor knowledgebase steps can safely remove stubborn components.

Posting in an effort to help others with the same problem (i.e. Internet Explorer not connecting to the Internet but Firefox connecting OK).

The problem occurred some time ago - I was still on Dial-Up - one evening IE-6, OE, Firefox and update procedures for software worked. The next morning Firefox and Outlook Express would connect BUT IE-6 and most software updates would not. At this time I was running SpyBot and Kaspersky AntiVirus. Since then I have moved to BT Broadband but still IE-6 and software updates would NOT connect (Firefox & OE were fine).

Have recently downloaded AVG AntiSpy, SuperAntiSpyware, Ad-Aware; have manually updated all of these and updated SpyBot. Have also deleted Kaspersky AntiVirus (outdated) and installed AVG AntiVirus - sadly, this resulted in no change to what was happening. I obviously performed full scans with every one of the products - all to no avail.

This morning, I came across one post where the writer had 'fixed' the problem by deleting his Norton Anti-Virus. After thinking for a bit I remembered that when Kaspersky was installed it had also installed Kaspersky Anti-Hacker -a monitor for attacks via the ports. There was an icon for it in the system tray. I right-clicked the icon and exited the program. I clicked the IE icon and IE came up and connected to my home page. I un-installed the Kaspersky Anti-Hacker and rebooted. Sadly, IE was back to NOT connecting BUT another re-boot sorted it out. Since then IE and program updates have worked fine !

SO, what had happened ?? All I can think is that on the evening everything last worked there was an MS Update for IE which updated it to bring it in-line with the new IE-7. This update had installed code which conflicts with older anti-viral or port monitoring software. SO, my suggestion would be that you should try disabling your anti-viral software and see if IE works. If it does, change your protection software or get a more up to date version.

Hope that helps !!

HI & help.. everything seems to be running fine on my computer but when I click on IE, I get a quick flash of a partial page & it disappears. So I am unable to get to tools, etc. My msn messenger & also msn explorer..but not the ie6. I have sp2, Norton anti virus, firewall, Webroot, reg. clean and have tried it all. HELP!!

I had this problem and fixed it by running a "remove Norton products" program from norton web site.

This was caused by an inactive Norton Antivirus / internet security....
