My shortcuts have stopped working since this morning when my PC did its normal auto shutoff after completing 5 torrent downloads which were just 4 .avi videos and one adaware 1.06r1 since I started up my this morning none of my normal RUN items started up by themselves and all of my quick start/programs icons are not working. Also all of my .exe files were not working by I fixed that issue with this fix:

"If you're unable to launch Regedit.exe even from Command Prompt, try this:
copy regedit.exe regedit.com
regedit.com" I ran it thorugh cmd prompt with alt+ctrl+del while holding ctrl key and choosing run new task."

Now my last issue is no shortcuts even creating a new one, I just get a blank useless .INK file or LNK file cannot be opened, and when I logon at start up a blank window opens before the logon window, here is what it looks like now along with my hijackthis logs and ewido report:

Summary and practical follow-ups (short, actionable)

This thread shows a classic file-association/registry problem rather than a missing-program issue: fixed the immediate .exe-launch problem, tried System Restore (per ) and was pointed at a registry .reg fix by — and reports the final solution came from a community file-association pack. When lots of shortcuts and Start‑up items stop working at once the underlying cause is usually a broken .lnk/.exe association or damaged Win system entries (sometimes triggered by malware).

To check and restore the shortcut handler quickly (safe, reversible)

  • Back up the registry or create a restore point first (see below).
  • From an elevated CMD, reset the .lnk association; the assoc/ftype commands are the supported way to restore a file‑type handler. Example commands to run as Administrator:
assoc .lnk=lnkfile
ftype lnkfile="%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe" "shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL" "%1"

These commands are the documented method to view/restore extension-to-handler mappings. (learn.microsoft.com)

Other useful steps (order to try)

  1. Run sfc /scannow to repair protected system files that shortcuts depend on.
  2. If many associations are still broken, merge a vetted file‑association .reg (only from trusted sources) or manually verify these registry keys: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk (Default = lnkfile) and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile\Shell\Open\Command (should point to rundll32/shell32). (support.microsoft.com)

Before editing: back up and safety
Export the affected registry branches or create a System Restore point so you can revert if needed; Microsoft documents System Restore and registry backup as the safe first step. After repairs, run a full anti‑malware sweep (Malwarebytes or another reputable scanner) because malware commonly breaks associations. (support.microsoft.com)

Blank dialog at boot
If an empty message box appears before logon, check the LegalNoticeCaption / LegalNoticeText entries under the Policies/System or Winlogon keys — those values produce pre‑logon dialogs. Also inspect Run keys and the Startup tab (msconfig) for stray entries that run at boot. (tenforums.com)

If these steps are uncomfortable or problems persist, a repair install / repair‑from‑XP CD is the conservative fallback.

you have no obvious adware/spyware on your system so I am assuming you have either a corrupt registry or their are some corrupt DLL files wthin windows.
2 things u can do.
System restore
or a
Repair installation

Both of these have a good chance of fixing the issue with minimum heartache.

Yea I tried a system restore, so a repair wit the windows xp cd is my only option right?

* Download the XP .exe Registry fix file by right-clicking on and choosing "Save link as..." or "Save target as..." from the resulting pop-up menu.

* Save the file to your desktop.

* Double-click the file you saved, and when it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.

*Reboot your computer; your shortcut functionality should be returned to normal.

The file wouldnt just double click I had to do the trick of holding the ctrl key while clicking "new task (run)" in the task manager then typing regedit.com in the command window to get the regedit to come up. Did safe mode scans deleted a few things here is my hijackthis file now:

Does that mean that you ended up having to edit the Registry manually? Just curious.
