Had problems with homepage being changed - tried locking it with Spybot but still changed. Ran free virus prog and it found 2 Trojans that it coulnt delete - bridge.dll and msxslab.dll

Trojanhunter also detected them. Ran hijackthis and deleted 2 entries that people have previously advised that included the bridge.dll file. Restarted but it took ages to fully load windows.

My homepage is STILL changin to a weird search page! Can anyone help? (Also MS office 2003 Programs wont run anymore - related? EG Word says not enough mem or diskspace)
Here is my log file:

Quick diagnostic summary and a safe, practical workflow tied to the existing replies (no re-posting of the full HJT log).

The symptoms described (persistent homepage change, multiple browser helper/startup anomalies, long boot and apps failing) match a classic search‑engine/browser‑hijacker situation — a family of PUPs that persist by installing BHOs, startup hooks and by altering the hosts file and browser settings. Specialist anti‑adware scanners are designed for these infections. (malwarebytes.com)

Recommended cleanup workflow (work in this order; back up data and create a restore point first):

  1. Make a full backup of important files and export the registry/startup lists so changes can be reversed.
  2. Reboot to Safe Mode (use the F8 advanced boot menu on XP-era systems) to prevent the hijacker from reloading while cleaning. (lifewire.com)
  3. Run a current adware remover, then a full antimalware scan: a current AdwCleaner run followed by a full Malwarebytes threat scan will remove most modern hijackers and their browser extensions/toolbars. Quarantine all findings and reboot. (help.malwarebytes.com)
  4. Reset or restore the hosts file to the default if redirects persist (make a copy of the infected hosts file first). Microsoft documents the correct default hosts content and a safe reset procedure. (support.microsoft.com)
  5. Re-run HijackThis (or a modern autoruns tool) to confirm removal of suspicious BHOs/startup keys; remove only clearly malicious items or consult a removal forum if unsure.

If Office 2003 programs still complain about memory/disk issues after cleaning, repair or reinstall the Office installation and verify free disk space and pagefile settings; Microsoft documents the supported repair paths. Running chkdsk and sfc /scannow can help if system files were damaged. (support.microsoft.com)

Notes tied to the thread: ’s suggestion to use a targeted CWS remover reflects the right idea for a 2004‑era hijack; modern equivalents (AdwCleaner/Malwarebytes) are safer and supported today. ’s HJT observation is useful — HJT output is a map of what to check, but edits to registry/startup should be done with exports/backups in place. If the infection resists removal or Office remains corrupted, an OS repair or fresh install is the most reliable final option.

Hi. :) Ok. Please do the following & we will see if we can get it sorted for you.
Download CWShredder from & run it. Select the fix button & it will get rid of everything related to CoolWebSearch. Close ALL other programs & windows, including IE, before running CWShredder. Reboot

Close all (browser) windows & have HJT fix these entries by placing a check in the appropriate box=
