Hi All:

My PC has been hijacked by the 'about:blank' bug.

I have downloaded the "About:Buster" application from the following link:
http://tools.zerosrealm.com/dllfix.exe
(as suggested in previous thread here), and I will try to follow the instructions suggested on that site, but I am not sure which DLLs are problematic on my PC and should erase. Could someone please tell me which of the following processes (below) I should delete (which I retrieved from HijackThis).

Note: My PC uses Windows XP Home edition. I have downloaded AdAware, hijackthis, CWShredder and Spybot and run them all, but haven't been able to get rid of the 'about:blank' bug which permanently has set my home page to about:blank and pops up ads continually on my screen. If there's anything else you think I should try, please let me know.

THANKS,

Glen

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here & navigate to & delete the following:

C:\DOCUME~1\Glen\LOCALS~1\Temp< folder contents
C:\WINDOWS\System\blank.htm< file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\fhgkaca.dll< file

Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked' :

Reboot normally after doing the above then post a fresh log plz.

Also moved your thread to the security forum :) .

Thanks very much Crunchie for those good instructions! It looks like it's working OK now.
It's nice to get success after trying so many things.

Below, is my latest HijackThis log.

Oddly enough though, my MSN hotmail email application is not responding ("The server is too busy"), which I've never had before in the many months I've used it. I saw someone else mention this same thing in another about:blank thread - not sure if this hotmail problem is related.

One more thing (if possibly you can help): Before my original thread posting, I had removed two applications from my Startup (from within msconfig) that I thought were suspicious, namely:
pmua - C:\Documents and Settings\Glen\Application Data\pmua.exe
and
wnscptr - C:\Windows\System32\wnscptr.exe

I forgot to put these back in before making my post. I am now thinking I should put them back in the Startup again. Do you think they are safe?

Update: My Hotmail is working now.

Those two files need to be deleted. Your hijack may return so feel free to post again if it does.

Thanks Crunchie, however, the problem has come back today (as you said might happen).

My latest hijackthis log is shown below.

I do have an application called "AboutBuster", which I haven't tried yet.

In addition to those two files you told me to delete, I just noticed there was one other file that I had recently unchecked:

wcmdmgrl --> C:\WINDOWS\wt\updater\wcmdmgrl.exe -launch

Should I delete wcmdmgrl.exe as well?

Additional Info: I have the following processes checked in my Startup:

MotiveSB --> C:\PROGRA~1\NETASS~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exe
IPClient --> "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP Insight\IPClient.exe" -l
IPMOn32 --> "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP Insight\IPMon32.exe"
realsched --> "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
qttask --> "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" - atboottime
mm_tray --> C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mm_tray.exe
winampa --> "C:\Program Files\Winamp3\winampa.exe"
WkUFind --> C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe
mnyexpr --> "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\mnyexpr.exe"
MsnMsgr --> "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MSNMsgr.Exe" /background
Microsoft Office --> C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~4\Office10\OSA.EXE -b -l
Net Assistant --> C:\PROGRA~1\NETASS~1\bin\matcli.exe -boot
Winzip Quick Pick --> C:\PROGRA~1\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE

That file you mentioned is from Wild Tangent & can go. The whole folder too if you do not need them for gaming.

Download and install APM from: http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=apm

Close all windows except HijackThis and fix the lines above.

In the upper window select explorer.exe
In the lower window find and rightclick the BHO from the HijackThis log
Select Unload DLL and click OK on the prompts that follow.

Reboot and scan with AdAware to remove the txt and html protocol association.

Post another log plz.

The problem seems to have been fixed by removing the lines you suggested (from HijackThis) and performing a couple of other things I had tried afterwards:

1) I ran this program called the Peper removal tool.
(http://www.memorywatcher.com/uninst.exe)
2) I rebooted several times in Safe Mode running Spybot and Adaware and removing whatever results came up each time.

I ran APM, but was worried about removing the DLLs from Explorer. Will removing the DLLs affect anything? I'm wondering if I should go ahead with that when things seem to be OK now, except for the fact that I did notice once that "About:Blank" show up in the Explorer address window for a split second for I received the web page I clicked on.

Lastly, Spybot kept returning a result of "DSO Exploit" after each Safe Mode reboot I did, but this is the only thing that ever turns up.

The only dll you remove is the one that shows up in the 02 line of the hijackthis log. You also never had the peper trojan so running that uninstaller would have done nothing.
There are a couple of threads here regarding the DSO exploit if you wish to do a search.

The problem has returned.

I ran HijackThis and APM and used APM to unload the suspect DLL (ehg.dll, which was new in the HijackThis log). I then continued to remove the usual R0s and R1s and ehg.dll from within HijackThis.

You had told me to select "explorer.exe" in APM. I believe you wanted me to select:
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
(where I then unloaded "ehg.DLL")

I couldn't find any of the previous suspect DLLs in APM. Is it possible to get a log from APM?

Below, is my latest HijackThis log after removing the R0s, R1s, and the following line:

I have just had a close look at it & it appears that creating a log is not possible. Hopefully when CWShredder has been updated it will not be necessary to use APM.
These ppl who are creating these hijacks are usually one step ahead, that's why these fixes do not work 100%.
I will go & study more & see if there are other cases of it returning after running APM.

You did run an updated Adaware after??

The problem has returned. It seems to return about every second or third time I launch Internet Explorer. I did have the latest download for Adaware and have run both Adaware and Spybot and they return zero results for Spyware.

I wonder why new .DLLs keep appearing.

A couple of questions I was hoping you could answer for me:
1) What site can I visit to check for the latest CWShredder
2) In my C:\Downloads directory I'm getting a lot of files that look like:
"backup-20040624-102226-823". Can I delete these files?

Three more things:

1) I've done some more reading on the topic and heard that an application called Pest Control might fix this problem. But I don't know where to find this.

2) I have the following .DAT file in my Application directory:
GDIPFONTCACHEV1
Is this a bad file? I've read that it could be a problem, but also read where it is could be a Hewlett Packard printer file.

3) I have found an interesting web page:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/hijacked/#removal
but I don't have any of the things it lists.
