Recently, swatkat helped fix my laptop from various problems. I was wondering if anyone could do this same with my old, untouched for 2 years, desktop computer? It is 20 times slower than my laptop, compared to browser speeds and general processing speeds. Please, if there's any hope at all, I'd appreciate any help I get in getting this dusty old thing back into shape.

I also have to restart it many times because programs that I open freeze alot.

Guess there's no hope then... :/

I cannot leave you swinging in the breeze like this..... but be WARNED!! Windows 98 came out before I was born - I know nothing about it; I don't think I am suggesting below that you kill some vital components, but I can't be located if I have!! The dll's and exe's are a bit different to those i am used to seeing.... gulp.
Firstly, and so very important considering what I have just said:
==download a fresh copy of hijackthis: http://216.180.233.162/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
-install it to a new folder alongside your program files and then remove the Hijackthis.exe you have on your desktop -reason being that HT makes backups into its folder, n we don't want to lose those, do we? On the desktop they would be so vulnerable.....
Start it, do a Scan Only, and then place checkmarks against all of the following, and press Fix Checked, and stand way back.

Note that I have included such as the weather channel autostart entries -this won't remove the pgm, so you can still start it manually whenever you wish - it's just stuff dragging your sys down, imo. If you don't want it at all, remove it via add/remove pgms as well.
So. Make a restore point, and go to it. If I don't hear from you I'll just assume that I busted it real good.
HPOOPM07.EXE .... who named that one??

I don't know how to make a restore point, so I just did it anyway. I feel that it still runs the same way, depressingly slow. I also can't run newly downloaded .exe's because it says I'm missing a blank.exe or something. It says it also when I hit "Run scan and save log".

And about the HPOOP07.EXE, it just randomly appeared a long time ago. I didn't name it. I think it's something to do with HP printer or something. I'm not sure.

i wuz just being silly about the HP file... anyway, I have gone as far as I can with advising you on this one - I just do not know 98. You do seem to have a fair load of scanners on the machine; my advice would be to keep the Kaspersky AV, stop the teatimer, and uninstall all the others. You can run Spybot on demand.
