Hope someone here can help me with this... My troubles started this morning when programs on my laptop had frozen. I rebooted, and after that I can't access my files, iexplorer and some other apps won't start. I see them among the running processes but something is blocking them from starting propperly.

Virus right? That's what I thought. Tried several system restores... When that didn't work I ran hijack this and went through the log, line by line, trying to find something... but nada.

I must be blind. If someone else could have a look at this maybe they'll be able to see something my tired eyes have missed. Many many thanks in advance for your time.

Sorry about the double post. I just wanted to know if the reason why 180 people has read this topic and there's been no replies is that you're as stumped as I am... or is it because nobody's been around to reply for the week-end?

Mmm... the log is clean.... and I have not considered much further. I would suspect shell32.dll, possibly shell.dll also?... maybe even explorer.exe.
You could try re-registering those two dll's with regsvr32:
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\shell.dll
But I don't really know. If no-one else has ideas shoot for a Windows Repair via Setup on your installation CD - that would repair files as well as registry settings.
[this is why i didn reply earlier... too much guessing! :)]

[this is why i didn reply earlier... too much guessing! :)]

It was a good guess though. Your guess saved me from a re-install.

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll
did the trick and everything is back to normal now.

Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!!!
I don't have to re-install. Hurray!!!!!! :icon_cheesygrin:

Wheee..! Well, there you go!
And thanks. Lil things, wins and such praise make my day!
:)
