This little project is a hobbyist take on a well-known side channel: unintended electromagnetic and optical emissions from display hardware. The class of attacks and measurements goes back to the 1980s (commonly called Van Eck phreaking) and is also the reason for TEMPEST-style countermeasures in secure facilities. Why some displays give anything at all: older cathode-ray tubes and unshielded analog paths produce broadband transients tied to the scan electronics and video amplifiers, so nearby radios or induction loops can pick up a detectable signal. Modern flat panels use high-speed differential links and better shielding, and switching power supplies/backlight drivers change the shape of any leakage. That difference is why experiments give wildly different results on different machines.
If someone wants to try a small, legal, receive-only experiment: use a sensitive receiver (an AM/MW set, shortwave receiver or an SDR), a small ferrite loop or telescopic antenna, and start with an old monitor or an unshielded VGA cable. Tune between strong broadcast carriers (listen for strange audio or tones), move the antenna along cables and power bricks, and use a simple high-contrast test pattern to create strong transitions. An SDR makes it much easier to spot narrow spikes on a waterfall display. Do not transmit or attempt to interfere with licensed services; keep the exercise strictly receive-only and low-power.
For deeper reading and practical reproducibility, search the literature on Van Eck/TEMPEST and the SDR community resources. If experimenting, test on legacy hardware first — that gives the clearest signals and the best chance to learn the underlying behaviors and were noticing.

Yes i have seen others saying it will work with LCDs (Signal is probably VERY WEAK)
