My lovely system has started up, my log on screen accessed and then I wait for my desktop to load- and then I wait some more, and more, than make coffee, then wait some more.

Can anyone tell me whats causing this delay- someone advised me to check Fontbook for duplicates and remove all those which I did, yet still i wait and wait. Is it anything to do with start up items?

Be grateful if anyone could shed any light...

Try and remove, ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

Try cutting down on your start-up items in extensions. Turn off what you don't need, keep what you do, and try that.
