My good friend has loaned me a laptop for an emergency - PowerBook G3, 333 MHz, 64 MB with OS 9.0.4.

It's slow and not like my Panther, but I only need it for emails and
simple stuff. However, I can't connect with AOL, which she said was
working fine a few days before she sent to me. (It's AOL 5, which
one has to have with OS 9, I think.)

I have called AOL tech support, twice, and got nowhere. Surprise, surprise!!! The new techies aren't like the old AOL techies...

I have got a new tel. wire, tried to connect with the tel. wire and
jack I connect with for my own computer, and tried in another room,
but I keep getting error messages - which vary from modem can't get a dial tone, to modem has timed out. The modem is internal.

The AOL techs had me change to new location (for me as a guest
to sign on) and given me new access numbers and gone thru
lots of procedures like checking the modem (Apple which changes
on its own to Hayes Basic)...but the techies didn't take me into the
System Folder or Extensions or do anything like the old techies used to do and I've forgotten about. They just gave up, couldn't wait to get
rid of me, told me to call Apple - where I'd have to pay!!! I have a feeling they don't know about OS9s.

I can't take the laptop in to Apple, because it's not mine and the owner
is not in my city, too far away.

She says it may be the Fax stf 5.0 and I should deselect it. But
I don't know how, although I've tried everything, and am concerned
about messing up her computer. She's even less technical than I am,
and wouldn't like that. As it is, the AOL techie had me get rid of all
her local access numbers and I don't know how to get them back.

But that's the least of my problems. If anyone has any idea how I
can connect with AOL, I would be most grateful.
