Hello, As you know, most every USB flash drive you purchase these days comes pre-formatted in FAT or FAT32. I have one connected to the USB port of my iMac (333mhz, 96mb RAM) that I want to initialize to MAC OS Extended. However, when I try to format it, the only option I have is DOS format. Drive Setup in OS 9 is of no help either, and I do not have access to an OSX box. Is there some third-party software out there that I can use to accomplish this? I know I cannot be the only person who …

Hi everyone, I have a Powerbook 5300CS with OS 8.1. I haven't used it in a couple of years but today I decided to work with it. I booted it up and everything looked good except the date and time was wrong. I corrected them and shut it down and hooked up my external CD ROM and external touch pad. When I turned it back on it only got as far as the boot screen and the boot indicator didn't even get a quarter of the way before it froze. I removed the CD ROM and touch pad and tried …

My Mac G5 won't power up. Checked the cord continuity-good. Checked the power from the wall-good. Yet, when I press the button on the front of the box-nothing. Don't know if the problem is a fried power supply or the switch. I have a multimeter, can someone walk me through troubleshooting? Thanks.

Apple Friends! What are you doing with your old apples running or not running? If running, what OS and software are you using? If not, did it get reused as a fish tank, etc? Or did it join the computer organ donor program?

When I type words in Japanese in the keyword search box, the letters are not shown properly. This happened a couple days ago, and I have reinstalled the language component, but still the same. I had had no problem in using the Japanese language input function (kotoeri) before this happened. I can type Japanese on Word. I am using power book G3 (originally OS8 Japanese version, and upgraded to OS9.2). Please help!

I bought a MacBook a while ago and with it came an OS 9 cd, and having lost the cd for the main computer (a G4 tower) i threw the cd into the drive... i couldn't open the OS 9 install program because it required me to open the classic program to do so (im trying to install that classic program and the reason i need to reinstall this is because my mom accidentaly reinstalled all system software and wiped the hard drive clean, we got some information salvaged, but not much...) so i open up the "Startup Disc" in …

Word has reached us in the UK that there is some sort of election happening in the US. In fact it has been happening for an incredibly long time, with one of the candidates in particular making more premature victory speeches (although not to Americans, I mean, they're only the people who get a vote) than anyone in the history of the known universe. OK, OK, I'm being cynical. But the Democrats are having their convention this week and all the smart newswires are saying how involved people are with the electronic side of things this time around. It's truly …

I forgot my password! I tried doing the "Disabling extensions" thingy by holding down shift, but it just told me that i needed to enter a password to go any further. I don't have the install disk, and i don't want to change to another OS. Is there anyway to reset/delete all user accouts/passwords without the password or the disk? Any help would be appreciated :)

I have two networked Macs, a G4 Quicksilver and G5 iMac. Lately I've experienced worsening font problems. Some faces are losing functionality and disappearing from documents. I have two drives in my G4 running both OS9 and 10.4.11. Also my iMac drive runs the same. The problem started when a Frutiger PS font in an OS9 document disappeared when opening the doc in Classic. In the Frutiger folder, I found the Light screenfont suitcase, along with the PS files for the other weights and styles. In OSX these other files could not be added to active fonts, leaving only the …

I received a PowerMac G4 (Digital Audio) which has had the hard drive formatted(?). Will not boot, just flashing '?" screen. I can go to OF screen via 'com-z' keys, but am stuck there! Is there any way to recover/restore the OS without buying a set of OS install disks? I've downloaded 2 "Install files" thru p2p sources, but no success. I don't know how to 'run-cd' from OF command line. Any tips/tricks/resources would be greatly appreciated !!

Sorry, but I want to trade data from a working Win XP PC and transfer it to a non-working Mac OS9.2 machine so I can update the Mac. Windows formats the USB flash drive (125MB) as FAT, the Mac offers to reformat it because it can't read it ... Either Mac format ("standard" or "extended") works in the Mac, but then fails to read in the Windows machine, which offers to reformat it as FAT again. Argh! How do I exchange data between a working Windows/Internet box and a failing Mac/off-internet box to get patches and fixes on it? Thanks! …

I bought a lot of blue and white g3 imacs from a school auction over the summer and they all require an owners password to log into the system. I have OS X 10.0 installed over the 9.2.2 but in order to upgrade higher I need to upgrade the firmware which requires me having access to 9.2.2 booted up. Is there a way I can get to the password file via 10.0 somehow and delete it or change it?? I am stuck with all of these machines and cannot do a thing with them. So if any of you gurus …

Hi everyone, I recently purchased a 7 year old Powerbook G3 "Kanga" from someone on Ebay. I needed a laptop and was tired of dealing with all of the problems with Windows-based systems. I decided that this would be a great way to learn the Mac and save some $$$ at the same time. The computer came with a USB 2.0 CardBus PC Card (one of the reasons I went with this unit), it's in great physical shape and seems to work flawlessly, except for this one problem: I can't get it to recognize any of my USB devices. Not …

Finally retiring old PowerPro 225 running OS 8.5. Getting a bomb on startup with message that there is a bus error. Will boot with original CD, but won't allow a reinstall, stating that the hard drive is locked. Will boot with extensions disabled, but can't get on network to copy old files to new drive. Have tried Conflict Catcher, but it can't get past the first test. I sense that if I unlock the hard drive, the problem will correct itself. How do I do that? The info box doesn't have a "Lock" checkbox.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, and I am going to get all the technical terms wrong, but please bear with me. I am looking to buy a iBook soley for running Pagemaker 6.5 and associated programs (word processing, mail, photos, etc.) I have read that the newer mac OS do not support PM 6.5. Upgrading from 6.5 is not an option. I run PM 6.5 now on OS 9.2 on my desktop ( I know that is not the correct Mac term, but it's late and my brain is fried) but I need it to …

I have a powerbook ?G4?, with an unknown (as in I don't know what it is) OS on it. When I boot it up it asks for a password. I set the password ages ago to keep my brother out, and now I don't know it. Is there any way to bypass this password screen? On the message asking for the password it says something like "You need a password to run in scsi disk mode" These are not the exact words, but are the words that I can remember off the top of my head. Also, I only get …

Hi, I am having a startup problem with a Power Mac G4 I recently got from a friend. They have no idea about which version the computer has or what is wrong with it. The problem is that when I turn on the computer it makes its mac startup sound and then stays at a white screen with a grey apple and nothing else. I have not owned a mac for 8 years or so and I really want to get this one to work (I miss Macs). One thought that I had was that the hard drive was formatted. …
