explorer.exe crashes at startup. (included hijack report)

Hey guys,

So I've had my Vista laptop for more than 2 years now. Last month, I took it to Tokyo. That was when things started to get messy. My explorer.exe crashes at every startup. I have to do ctrl + alt + del to run explorer.exe every single time. This never happened before. Now, i think the rundll32.exe does the same, except I never run it off the task manager. This was around the same time my wireless internet on my laptop stopped working too. I've included my hijack this file for you guys to see. Thanks!

Your PC is definitely infected, download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to checkmark the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Make sure that you restart the computer.

Locate the mbam.exe with your "my computer" and rename it to scanner.exe and try again.

Viewpoint should be removed in add / remove programs unless it is the paid for version.

Open HJT and place a tick next to the following entry.

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Launcher] %WINDIR%\SMINST\launcher.exe

Once done, click the "fix checked" button, then close HJT and reboot your PC.
Post a fresh HJT log in your next reply.

Is it just me, or does there seem to be a common issue with ppl flying overseas and Windows suddenly going haywire? Is there a security issue that we are not aware of at large, or is it simply coincidence?

Before, I would get that error message saying that explorer.exe stopped working, and then I would have to start it from the task manager. This time, I didn't get that error message, but I only had a blank screen with the mouse on it. So I restarted explorer.exe with the manager.

This time, there seems to be a lot more processes running in the Processes Tab in the Task Manager. I also notice 2 rundll32.exe's running. Another thing that happened when all this started was that my wireless internet stopped working.

Because the entry is in the RUNONCE section of the regustry, it will run on reboot. If you have restored your system to factory, then this is likely to be a kosher RUNONCE from HP (a reminder I believe to backup your system).

If it's there after normal operations. it's a trojan as Rik advises. When you think you've cleaned out the trojans, it won't hurt to do a Windows repair (if the tools are there).

The RegCure run would have cleared out the missing files/no name items from HJT. (Worth checking though).

The RegCure "errors" are just a reflection of the amount of coming and goings into/from your system that has teken place over time. What it has done is to leave the registry properly reflecting what's actually registered on your system.

RCE: I think I tried using it a long time ago to mask my ip but I've tried deleting it to no avail. I've fixed those that you've told me to and I'll repost the HJT log after I reboot.

My laptop's actually been doing much better than since the start. Thanks for your help dude.

Do you happen to know how to tackle wireless problems? I'm using some nVidia networking controller and I suspect that as the problem.

a) Do you have the latest drivers installed for the wireless device?

b) Are you using the in-built wireless utilities or a 3rd party utility (if the latter, get rid of it!)

c) May also be an after effect of IpShark

On the wireless networks, we don't know your problem so it's difficult to comment. One thing though, if you've had a trojan, then your network could be affected by damage to your firewall settings. Sort of thing.

Also there's an Nvidia forum dealing with their specific product problems (http://forums.nvidia.com) in the hardware section.

I can't see why IPshark could be involved in any wireless misfortune.
