If I upgrade to Windows 7, on my home desktop running Vista, will I lose all of my information that is currently on my hard drive?

If you are upgrading in place i.e. overwriting your current installation of Vista with Windows 7, then no. You won't lose anything.

My personal view, however, is to do a fresh install.

Unactivated copy of Vista itself as evidence of a previous installation. This enables you to "clean install" an upgrade version of Vista to any formatted or unformatted hard drive, which is usually the preferred method when installing any new operating system.

you will only lose your data if you do a clean install (recommended) but an upgrade will just install 7 on top of Vista
