  1. Do not ever show your app's source to public; especially when its written for customer; its simply not fair; if you want to share sth, just make (and share) code snippet. (use vb builtin function to create one),

  2. Whats your point? Whats not working for you? Add exception handling and paste debugging info.

From the second vid, my guess that there is sth wrong in your restarting instruction.... whatever form it has (class, OLD, modified) just wrap it with exception and paste debug info.

No its not me - Adam Boduch is co-owner of 4programmers and he is head admin. My nick is not mentioned anywhere, and you will not 'see' and interact with me unless you are an admin; Im responsible for technical (strictly) aspects of website. Thats why I mainly login to admin control panel. My activity on frontend is rather at low level.

Its in Polish as our goal is to reach as many Polish IT professionals and IT wannabe's as its possible. But - of course - if you like to join - feel free to do it :)

Wojciech_1 0 Junior Poster in Training Banned

I post it here for you to admire -> Our forum... this site was my idea, I was the one who coded most part of it; Im still responsible for core of this webapp.....

Its nothing wrong in criticising, as long as its well-deserved.... and in this case it was well-deserved. Instead of asking whats wrong with us you should ask what was wrong with him, what made him not accepting criticism. Would be more accurate here.

The history with SFS is that, about 1 year ago I registered on one forum where admin was very thick skinned and wasnt accepting any criticism (there were +/-90% of community criticising him). So he did what he did - he submitted our IPs to SFS. We contacted SFS regarding this and they started demanding any kind of proof before they add someone to this list. But, his submission was before they started demanding. All in all - it was clear for us - it was done as a revenge for being criticant.

Afterwards we started 'cleaning up' internet from scams like him.....

How webapp has been up for 13 yrs? simple and easy - Dani just lets community run by itself..... she adds some new (more or less tested - giving she knows how to perform tests) features; but most of whats powering this webapp is community.

I will not comment on all the rest that has been written after my prev post.

If you want systems I (co)worked/ing on, just visit Google and look them up. I'll not post addresses here.

RikTelner commented: "simple and easy - Dani just lets community run by itself..." Yes, it's called "community". Each website needs one. +0

Its not recipe for disaster..... just the opposite.
Coder should test written code - its called testing phase. Its done automatically by mechanisms builtin within IDE.
Or you mean user-driven tests (udt)? these are done by users just by using the newly-imlemented feature.

I know not being able to see who downvoted is intentional but I cannot understand the logic behind this.....

Is Dani talented? To be honest - she knows how to code (=write code), but she has no even slightest idea of what it means to listen to users; to be devoted to sth; he has wrong business model - you do not start new business when prev is not finished. But call her talented if you like - I think she is not.

From what I believe, main purpose of feedback forum is for users to give ideas/requets of new features. There are two types of features: core features and non-core ones (called satelite). Whenever user requests feature change/addition which would alter core usability of webapp - there is no place for discussion - coder (in this case Dani) should start coding it immediately and do not stop till it gets implemented. Thats how you gain respect. By devoting free-time/every possible moment. Its end of story here.

When user requests satelite feature, than its ok to have it discussed and users can say what they think.

==

What is all about is that I have different definition of how you gain respect and how you should be a leader of online community. And I try to communicate this.

And please stop saying that yu do not alter my posts where I say not possitive things - of course you do - thats why I do have infractions (where is the …

Its blind loyalty to its fullest. Wrong things are not the one that should be discussed publicly. Thats exactly what we strongly fight against. And we will not stop till it disappears totally. Its like censorship. Here in Poland is like a plague - every second forum is like this.

But I still cannot see who downvoted my posts/articles. Informative as hell.....

Bandwitch is also cheap. The key here is choose wisely (with cost-effectiveness in mind). Bear in mind that cost-effectiveness does not have to be equal with resource-less/poor.

BTW what about proper quotation system - is it going to be implemented here Dani?

Reverend Jim commented: How about we quit harping on fixing something that ain't broken? +0
Wojciech_1 0 Junior Poster in Training Banned

In fact they are cheap....

It all depends how you choose them, what are your requirements and needs. Generally, if you choose wisely, you are able to cut the bill to be < $50. It can be done. It does not mean that server is feauture-poor; just the opposite - you get full-featured server.

You can cut even more once you buy physical server - its one time price but its worth it. With size of 15,6" laptop, you get: Xeon 4,8 GHz * 6, up to 256GB RAM, 4*2TB SSD. It costs (one-time) $1299, but monthly cost is +/- $40 (with server running 24/7). Its worth trying.

On SSD you get nothing (fully bootable but empty), you get dvd with OS (usually Linux - I got Arch cause I ordered it).

Once unpacked, insert DVD, boot it from there, install system, configure your webspace (the way you want it - its yours) and enjoy.

@Revered - I did not say that this site lacks tooltips - I said they are incomplete/no clue-giving, and as such, there is no point in their existance here.

To all: I clearly see that is of no sense, as we will not reach any consensus.
PS. Its of no offence to call someone script-kiddie. It just states a fact.
PS2. Off-topic starts here. Move/divide it.

RikTelner commented: "just states a fact", first of all, go to online dictionary and find the meanings of terms "fact" and "script kiddie". +0
Wojciech_1 0 Junior Poster in Training Banned

And yet again - lack of proper quoting system makes me not to quote just to write from context - hope its clear......

Yes Im freelancer and Im ok with it. I had been working hard to build my reputation/respect, and Im quite respected here (I mean Polish IT market). On webapps like this, respect is required but respect does not mean that criticism/honesty is not allowed; whatsmore - each and every serious web-oriented society (help forum/newsgroup etc) staff encourages its users to openly write what they think/their suggestion(s)/idea(s) etc, what they'd improve and how. But - most importantly - they react instantly - I mean when user requests feature and its welcomed by others, coders starts to code without any delays (even if this requires doing it in nighttime/day(s) free of work; and even when it requires rewriting part/s of code.

Above should be rule no. 1 especcialy when (as here) CMS is work of one person. Lets take quoting system as example. I wrote that its not done well (imo) and how should be corrected; insead of talking, Dani should sit and rewrite it. Same with tooltips. Why there are no descriptions in tooltips? Cause Dani is busy with her second business/whatever else. It will not gain her respect (at least not from me). It does not mean I'll be trying to offend her - no way - I will just not respect her as webdeveloper. She has knowledge of webapps, but not very indepth one. She knows …

I have exactly the same problem as OP had and I followed this thread... no luck at all.

This windows/popup/call it whatever should disappear within given time (say 10 sec.). Its pretty easy to code - just do the following:

TimeListener time = new TimeListener();
time.setTimeLimit = 10000; // 10s * 1000ms; sets the time limit after which the action will take place;
time.setFireAction = Application.Modules.PM.InfoWindow.Close(); // this is just from my script. Replace what is after (=) to suit your correct 'path'
time.Fire(); // Fires it all

Thats simply it. The above sample is in C# and is taken from my websystem. Just adjust/rewrite it to suit your programming lang/needs. No need to mention you need using System.Timers; directive.

Dani: Im on Win8.1 and Win8.1 is preinstalled (this means I bought the laptop with Win8.1 being already there). AFAIK Win will not install on Mac, or am I missing sth (Im not spec in OSes so I truly dont know)?

Wojciech_1 0 Junior Poster in Training Banned

Dani: you stated that you have second business that generates income so I assume that you cover your expenses from there...... and you're right saying that releasing source of DaniWeb will not generate income, but this will generate something that is even more precious than financial income: wide user stream whose work/hobby is IT and they will help, and maybe sponsor/s will be found. All in all - its worth trying.

Deceeptikon: Answering your questions, I will add/change/improve many things here:

  1. Quoting; add quote button to post/article header, so it stays there at all times,
  2. Tabstops; users are acustomed with template: TAB key = next tabstop; edit field should be included in tabstop count;
  3. Autoscrolling of edit field: cursor should follow enter key; enter should scroll screen so cursor should stay visible all times without need to scroll manually;
  4. Who voted how should be visible: for exaple as mouse hover for vote count;
  5. Editor buttons and tooltips: now there are shrtcuts in tooltips, but there should be at least short description what hovered button does;
  6. Making buttons text's more straightforward and accurate (like submitting reply is Alt+shift+small letter s instead of Alt+S etc;
  7. Every menu entry have width set to fixed: this causes many submenus to be displayed on left side insted right side; width should be set to auto or inherit;

and many other things. Id edit that list once I spot sth that needs improvement/to be added.

Wojciech_1 0 Junior Poster in Training Banned

Ctrl+Shift+Tab; its free in every OS, its the easiest to remember (all three buttons are one after another (from bottom to top)), and can be pressed using one hand.

Wojciech_1 0 Junior Poster in Training Banned

Id not start other thitng until prev one is done/Im happy with current state/no more suggestions are given by users on how to improve etc.

I understand that webapp like DaniWeb needs excessive financing, but - with all due respect - this is not the way it should be handled...... Neglecting own users is not the way of doing it....

Why you dont want to introduuce new features suggested by me (and not only me)??

Id shutdown nothing. Id simply upload source code to GitHub or similar and let community build it. That way Id degrade my role to simply accepting/reviewing PRs.

Or Id start selling DaniWeb license....
It requires to be thought over very carefully...
