Hey chimchims, don't know if you already solved your problem, but I think this should do it

(This is using XP by the way) Start -> Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options
Then click on the Language tab, and then the 'Details...' button. There in the 'Text Services and Input Languages' box, if you set the 'Default input language' to 'English(United Kingdom)', and then click OK, that should set your keyboard right. Also if you look at it before you change anything, it might have been set to 'US' previously.

Hope that helps

I know it's a bit(!) late in the day, but just in case anyone was wondering, the computer's fine now and has been for some time now, guess it was just a driver issue :-p

OK guys, will try out what you say. Thanks very much

Hello, wondering if i can get some advice on this problem. Basically when i connect anything through the USB port and try to install it through the Found New Hardware Wizard, at the end it'll tell me

"There was a problem installing this hardware
*Name of device*
An error occured during the installation of the device
The system cannot find the file specified"

And then the little balloon that comes up on the task bar says "A problem occured during hardware installation. Your new hardware may not work properly" or something like that. However with a memory stick, it still works fine and i can view files, save stuff on it, etc no problems. But when i tried to use a wireless transceiver, it just wouldn't work i.e. I can't see it in the My Computer window. This computer is literally just a month old, so was it just badly built? I try to install the hardware manually, but i get the same error.
Please help, it's a pretty good computer otherwise and this little nagging problem just makes it look bad.

Oh OK then, thanks for the advice. (Y)

I've been running SP1 of XP Professional since i got this computer in July. I did a System Restore yesterday to clear some problems, and i turned on downloading updates, but so that i still had the option to install them myself. This morning it tells me i could install SP2, but says it recommends that i backup my system first. How necessary is this? And does this mean getting some blank DVD+/- RW disks?

... Yea, please help, my screen just went off for no reason, like it would if the monitor was off. I don't understand it, the computer hasn't been on for that long, and there weren't that many difference programs, and even so, i don't think that should happen should it?!! Do i need a new monitor? I've been thinking of buying one anyway, but this is the first time i've come across something like this.
SOMEONE PLEASE HELLPP!!!!

I did try reinstalling Office, but no joy. That link you gave WlkingMan seemed to be talking about some really complicated stuff, i mean more complex than my sudden problem, because for a start I don't use MathType. Thanks though.
Oh can't anybody, ANYBODY help me out here?! The error is so annoying cos it loks harmless, yet could possible develop into something bigger.

Hi there, i get the following error message every time i open and close Microsoft Word and Excel

For Microsoft Word:
Microsoft Visual Basic
Compile Error in hidden module: Auto Exec

and for Excel:
Microsoft Visual Basic
Compile error in hidden module: AutoExecNew (when i open it)
Compile error in hidden module: DistMon (when i close it)

My friend reckons i've got a bug on the program somewhere, i was wondering what you guys would make of this. After the error box comes and I click 'OK', i can still use the programs fine. I'm working on XP Professional SP1.

Really hope someone can help remove this annoying thing, cheers!

Hey Catweazle, sorry bout that, i won't use that font anymore then... Erm i tried looking for that directory on My Computer, but no joy... will try again soon tho, thanks

I've encountered that problem before, the only thing is, I know where the keys are supposed to be. It's the keyboard most of the times... the @ sign is shift-2 and the # is shift-3 and so on... but like what catweazl said, try changing your keyboard language settings..

K K i know it wasn't catweazl... and anyway, it didn't woooorrkk
I went to 'Keyboard' in Control Panel, and the only language i saw was English-United States. SO i tried adding English (British) for fun and it said i needed to have a CD-ROM, which i don't have! The Windows 98 SE cd. SO does that mean i can't do anything about it.. cos after it told me to have the cd inserted into the drive, it came up with this box sayin i could browse, or upload the file from another location apart from my disk drive... Hmmm.. the C:/ drive was listed there. Maybe i can get the necessary file saved onto my computer some other way perhaps?!?!!

Hi there, a bit of a minor problem with a Compaq Evo N600c, Windows 98SE laptop. My '@' sign is accessed by Shift+2 even though it shows the double quotation ' " 'marks on the top of the '2' key... It's a classic case of the keys being in the wrong places! Also i can't get the pound/hash? key (like you get on phones) instead i get the '\' sign... which i still get from the key that shows it anyway! I think there might be an easy way of solving this, but I don't know it! Please help someone, anyone, it's VEEERRYY annoying!

Maaaaann, u know i tried that quick restore thing, it didn't work, and so i thought i'd just leave it and carry on managing the system like that. Now it wont even come on at all!! I switch it on, the light comes up, but not the fan, and the screen is blank! I'm soo scared this is the end of this fighter albeit pensioner of a computer... Do u reckon i should start shopping around for a new one. I've taken out the battery and re-inserted it but no joy. And i switch it on with the AC plug in.

Oh ok, thanks a lot! Will definitely try to give the old timer less to do. Haven't actually got a Windows CD, but i've got this 'Compaq Quick Restore' cds, i'll try them. Hope that works, tho i've got this feeling it might try to clear my hard-disk drive if i complete the process... Oh well, will still try it anyhow, thanks all for ur help!

OH erm is it possible to buy extra RAM for a laptop and fix it myself? I'm thinkin it's not, but i may be wrong. Also does anyone know what exactly 'KERNEL32.DLL' is?! Cos my messenger had an error in that or something. Was also wondering if u can upgrade to XP on laptops.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Oh, i didnt mention, i use a Compaq Armada 110 Notebook, I've got MSN Plus! installed as an addition to MSN 6.2. And i've got a Trident AGP (if that helps)

Lately, when i have several MSN chat windows open, the whole look of the windows change and lines disappear and stuff. I'll try to get links to give u an idea of what i mean. It has been happening for quite a while now, and happens pretty much everytime i've got about 5-7 chat windows open(that's how far i get before it all goes wrong). Sometimes it affects my browser's window too. It actually happened this morning with only 3 chat windows.
I use a Windows ME,and an Intel Celeron processor(couldn't find any information about servics packs), It's a rather old system, had it since 2001, its only got 56MB RAM too... Hope this is a fixable problem, i've been wanting to get a new system but haven't saved up enuff yet :o . I hope this is enough information, pls let me know if u need any more :D

Helloo... My name is Yinka. And i'm not very big on programming(had a horrible experience with FORTRAN) in my first year of uni. Just generally into understanding how these things(computers) work, if not for anything, just so that i know how to fix em when things go wrong... Cos u see, i always draw analogies to real life human emotions and qualities, with computers. I think they deserve it, and i'm sure everyone thinks so too :P
Anyway this looks like a brilliant site, well done, i'm sure it'll be of benefit to me, and i hope i can be of benefit to other users as well.

Cheers :D
