I've been running SP1 of XP Professional since i got this computer in July. I did a System Restore yesterday to clear some problems, and i turned on downloading updates, but so that i still had the option to install them myself. This morning it tells me i could install SP2, but says it recommends that i backup my system first. How necessary is this? And does this mean getting some blank DVD+/- RW disks?

I've install SP2 probably a couple dozen times and have never lost any files. That said, there are no guarantees. If there is only one chance in a hundred of something bad happening, those are good odds... unless you're that one.

It's your call. If you do decide to do a backup of your personal files (most of which will be in My Documents) and email, then you will need CD-R's or something along that line to store them on.

Oh OK then, thanks for the advice. (Y)
